Maritime Academy of Nigeria

The Maritime Academy of Nigeria, formerly known and addressed as the Nautical College of Nigeria, was established in 1979 by the Federal Executive Conclusion No.EC.(77) 172. It was designed as an integrated institution for the education and training of shipboard officers and ratings; and shore-based management personnel. The Academy graduated its first batch of Cadets in 1983. In 1988, the status of the college was raised by the promulgation Decree No. 16 of 1988 (Now under CAP 217 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990) with a statutory mandate to train all levels and categories of personnel required for the effective and efficient operation of all facets of the Nigerian maritime industry.

N.B For more information and updates visit www.campusflava.com

The Maritime Academy is located at 4, College Road, Oron. The Academy is situated on a vast stretch of land with a waterfront in Oron, Akwa Ibom State on Latitude 4.47'N and Longitude 8.15'E. It is close to the Cross River approaches of the Port of Calabar in Cross River State and about 200 Kilometres from Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
From year 2004 to date, the Academy has continued to experience great development strides in its effort to discharge its mandate. In 2006, the Federal Government built a concrete jetty at the cost of about N184,000,000. at the Academy's water front. In 2010, the Nigeria LNG donated state-of-the art 50-man capacity capsule for Survival at Sea training.
Mission To provide the merchant Navy, the maritime industry and allied industries, qualitative education and training that accords with up-to-date technology that meets national and international standards and satisfies end-user expectations.
Vision To be internationally recognised as a centre of excellence in maritime training. https://sites.google.com/site/maritimeoron/about-us

The Maritime Academy of Nigeria is a federally owned educational institute in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Originally called the Nautical College of Nigeria, it was established in 1979 to educate and train shipboard officers, ratings and shore-based management personnel. The first batch of Cadets graduated in 1983. In 1988 the college's mandate was expanded to training all levels and categories of personnel for all facets of the Nigerian maritime industry. By the end of 2008, the academy had trained about 4,300 Nigerian Merchant Navy officers and more than 65,000 other workers in marine operations. The academy has an active alumni association, helping members to keep in touch and assist each other, as well as promoting improvements to standards for cadet training.
Facilities
The Academy occupies a large area of land on the waterfront in Oron, close to the Cross River approaches of the Port of Calabar in Cross River State and about 200 Kilometres from Port Harcourt, Rivers State. In April 2003, President Olusegun Obasanjo directed that work should start on construction of a jetty for the academy. In February 2010 Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) said it had donated N30 million of safety training equipment to the academy. The equipment included a totally enclosed 50-person lifeboat, a davit-launched rescue boat and a twelve person life-raft. NLNG had previously donated equipment worth over N100 million, and uses Nigerians from the academy for 60% of its crews. However, graduates of the Maritime Academy do not have access to ocean going vessels for them to earn hours at sea, which is required for their professional qualification.
Demand and capacity
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has said that 50,000 seafarers are needed for the Nigerian shipping industry to realise its full potential. As of 2009, Nigeria had less than 3,000 seafarers. About 2,000 vessels were engaged in cabotage, or local trade between Nigerian ports, with mostly foreign crews. Announcing plans to open a new academy at Badagry, the head of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency said in 2008 that over 3,000 students apply each year for admission to the Oron-based academy but less than 1,000 are accepted. In October 2009 the academy's rector explained that the academy had to restrict the number of students accepted due to shortage of classrooms and accommodations. He denied bias in admission, and said the academy in fact made it easier for candidates from disadvantaged states to gain admission.
Courses
Please refer the Academy's website, http://www.manoron.edu.ng/, for information.
In April 2008 a delegation from the Norwegian ship owners association visited the academy and discussed a collaborative training programme with the Academy. In October 2008 the Minister of State for Transport, Prince John Okechkwu Emeka, said the academy would soon be upgraded to become a degree-awarding institution. He also called for increased funding from the Federal government.
Quality of training
In May 2009 the academy was subject to severe criticism by the director of Lagos Channel Management. He said that even the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency had found that the academy did not meet international standards. Problems included lack of teaching facilities adequate to handle the number of students, and unavailability of seafaring vessels on which students could complete their mandatory one-year sea term. Students seeking proper training had to attend the Regional Maritime University in Accra, Ghana. Captain Thomas Kemewerighe, a graduate of the academy, said Nigeria does not have people qualified to provide proper training. He said most of the graduates ended up as "okada riders" (motorbike taxi operators).
In September 2009 the government announced that a project launched by the Federal Ministry of Transport, the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme, would send a first batch of 27 students to the Academy of Maritime Education and Training in India to study for Bachelor in Science and Bachelor in Engineering degrees in marine-related subjects. The academy was not considered for this program.
Other issues
In August 2009 three human rights groups petitioned President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to investigate alleged cases of corruption and financial malpractices at the Academy. They also claimed that 43 students had died in avoidable circumstances in the past year.

Prolonged ASUU strike: Vice chancellors condemns it

The Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, have jointly condemned the ongoing indefinite strike embarked upon by thee Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The Secretary-General of the Association of Vice Chancellors of Federal State Universities in Nigeria, Professor Michael Faborode, spoke on behalf of the group and urged the Federal Government and ASUU to resolve the crisis.

N.B For more information and updates visit www.campusflava.com

He said: “At the 59th meeting of the Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Federal, State and Private Universities held on Thursday, 18th July, 2013, at the Nigerian Turkish Nile University (NTNU), Abuja, the ongoing national strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was extensively deliberated upon.

“The association noted that the strike action was crippling the education system in Nigeria, and portraying the system and the country in bad light to the global community.

“The association therefore appealed to the Federal Government and ASUU to expeditiously reach an amicable solution on the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, so as to restore normal academic activities in Nigerian university system.”

The vice chancellors also spoke strongly against plagiarism, which is fast becoming a trend among students and lecturers in Nigerian universities.

“It urged its members to continue to uphold the extant traditions of the academic system,” he added.

“It was observed in particular that, the association, by collectively subscribing to the TURN-IT-IN anti-plagiarism services at a considerable cost, has taken appropriate steps to uphold article 9.2 i&ii of the Declaration, aimed at combating widespread plagiarism in our universities, by authenticating the originality of all academic publications for the sake of credibility of the system.

“Members extolled the virtues of the anti-plagiarism package within a short time of its usage, and projected that indolent and lazy academics and students, who denigrate the system with their inordinate ambition and sharp practices, no longer have any hiding place, as the service would fish them out for appropriate sanction.

“Plagiarism is one of the most heinous misdemeanours in the academic system”.

Over 50 vice chancellors and deputies attended the meeting.

ASUU not planning to call off strike

ACADEMIC Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has described as speculative reports that the strike embarked upon by the union over the inability of the Federal Government to implement the 2009 agreement it willingly entered into with the union would be called off this Thursday.
National President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge, told Vanguard that he was surprised to hear that the union was going to call off the strike on Thursday when the issues tabled before government had not been resolved.

N.B For more information and updates visit www.campusflava.com

Faggae said: “There is nothing like that (suspending the strike). I am also surprised to hear people say that we are going to call off the strike.
He said: “Our members have made it categorically clear what they want. This meeting we had with government on Friday at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, is just exploratory.
graduating-students
“We are trying to look at issues holistically and see how we are going to address them. So assignments were given to various people that attended the meeting and the expectation is that we will meet tomorrow (today), Monday and look at the assignment given and also look at it on Thursday again.
“So, that is why I’m surprised to hear people say that we are going to suspend strike on Thursday. The mandate of our members is very clear. So, we will wait and see what the Monday and Thursday meetings unfold and then we report back to our members.”
On how long it would take ASUU leaders to convene a meeting with its members after the meeting with government on Thursday, the ASUU boss said “we are in constant consultation with our members, we don’t really have problems with that.
“After the meeting, we will decide when to link up with our members depending upon what is placed on table on Thursday.”
Commenting on the speculation that the union might suspend the strike if the government met up to 50 per cent of the agreement, Faggae said the union would prefer to get to the bridge before crossing it.
He commended the positive disposition of the Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Education towards the resolution of the crisis.
Fagge added: “For us, the interaction we have had with the Joint Committee clearly indicates that they are concerned like other Nigerians”.
“This is expected of the representatives of people. You see the problem has always been that the executive arm of government does not really hearken to advise that are given on how best to address the problems on education in this country.
“We are convinced as a union that the only thing the government can really do for Nigerians is to avail them of education.
“Once you are able to do that, you will see that people will be able to generate jobs and they will be able to take care of themselves and contribute to nation building. So that is the argument we are placing on the table.”

How to Make Decorative Bow and Arrows

Ever gotten bored outdoors with literally nothing to do? Or are you stuck on what to get your friend for Christmas or a birthday? If your friend is the type who likes archery, maybe making them a wall ornament that reminds them of their favorite sport might do the trick.

N.B For more information and updates visit www.campusflava.com

Steps
  1. 1
Find a curved, bow shaped stick. Since you aren't going to be using it for actual shooting, any type of wood should be fine as long as it is sturdy.

  2. 2
Sand and decorate the bow. This is optional. If you want to, you can paint it or add any designs.

  3. 3
Find a length of ribbon. This can be any color. You can get one that is just the right size from the ribbon cake stores use to secure a cake box. Remember that the ribbon should be about 1 1/2 times the length of the bow.

  4. 4
Wrap the ribbon around the bow starting at the base of one end. Continue wrapping the ribbon around the bow until you reach the other end.

  5. 5
Pull the ribbon across to the end where you started. This should function as a substitute bow string.

  6. 6
Secure the ribbon with glue or by tying a knot. If there is any ribbon left over, you can cut it.

  7. 7
Garnish the bow or add more designs if needed.

  8. 8
Find straight twigs or sticks for arrows. Sand them and paint them if needed. If you have feathers, you can also fletch the arrows.

    Tips
  • When wrapping the ribbon around the bow, do so slowly and carefully. This is so that the ribbon would look neat.
  • For garnishes, you may want to use things like beads, feathers or small stones.
  • It is best if you use a glue gun for sticking the decorations on.

How to Make Garden Lanterns from Old Tin Cans

Light up the night repurposing old tin cans. That summertime, rustic appeal will add warmth and a glow to any balmy summer evening. All you will need are tin cans (of any size), leaves to use as a pattern and a hammer and nails.

N.B For more information and updates visit www.campusflava.com

 Steps

Cleaning the Tin Can

  1. 1
Clean up the tin can. Open each tin can and remove the top (along with any contents). Remove labels and wash with warm soapy water. Dry completely.

    • Discard any cans that are damaged or rusted.

Prepare Tin Can For Punching

Freezing the tin can first will prevent your tin from being deformed once you start hammering it.
  1. 1
Fill the tin can up to 3/4 of its length with sand. This will prevent bulging of the tin can when frozen. (Water expands when it freezes.)

  2. 2
    Add water.

  3. 3
Place the tin can inside the freezer.

  4. 4
Wait until the water freezes. Then remove the tin from the freezer.

Adding the Leaf Design

  1. 1
Choose a suitable leaf to place on tin can. Tape the leaf in place on the can. Check that you like the placement and size before you begin to hammer.

  2. 2
Tap the first nail into the leaf, being careful not to rip or break the leaf. Consider hammering the first nail toward the top of the leaf to stabilize your design.

  3. 3
Hammer the remaining nails around the perimeter of the leaf in order to create a pattern. Space the nail holes evenly so your design appears symmetrical.

  4. 4
Remove the nails and pull or tear off the leaf to expose the design. You should be able to see the same leaf pattern now outlined in nail holes on the tin can.

Spray Painting the Tin Can

Spray paint the can after you’ve created the design, so that you don’t disturb the paint (painting beforehand may create a more rough exterior).
  1. 1
Place the tin can in an open, covered area. Spray paint it the desired color.

  2. 2
Allow the tin can to dry for up to 24 hours. However, most spray paints will dry within 3 hours if left in a cool, dry area.

Assembling the Lantern

  1. 1
Fill the bottom of the can with sand. Fill it with about a ½ cup of sand, depending upon the can size.

  2. 2
Place the votive in the middle of the can, resting on the sand.

  3. 3
Light the votive. (Or, turn on battery operated votive.) This will light up the night.

  4. 4
    Finished.

Tips
  • Hang a series of such lanterns by hammering holes on two sides of the top of each lantern can. Thread a wire through each end and loop and secure ends to the can. Hang on trees or posts around the yard, being careful to keep them away from anything flammable.
  • Use differently sized cans to add interest and to enhance a variety of areas in your yard.

Things You'll Need
  • Tin cans
  • Large leaves for your pattern (green leaves are stronger, you'll need leaves that can handle hammering)
  • A bucket of sand to hold the candles in place
  • As many nails as possible and your hammer to create the pattern

  • Masking tape
  • Spray paint
  • Votive candles; consider using battery operated votive candles to reduce the risk of fire

    • Fasten the baking paper with tape on the frame.
  3. 3
    Make the puppets.

    • Draw the puppet you want on a piece of paper, or cardboard.

    • Cut out the puppet.
    • Put a piece of tape on one side of the stick or straw. Leave some free tape at the end of the end of the stick. Show's on!

    • Get an audience, and some friends to act with you, if needed.
    • Make sure you have good access to the screen, you might want to cut the sides of the cardboard box down, leaving some centimeters, just so that it can still stand up alone.
    • Stand behind the sofa, or table, with the screen in front of you, and the audience in the front of the screen.
    • Have a strong light-source just behind you and the screen.
    • Have all the puppets ready, and then turn of the light.
    • Start the show and enjoy!
  5. 5

Tips
  • Make a holiday-themed show. Find a story on the Internet about something relevant to the holiday, and make the characters out of paper, write down what each character will say and do, and memorize it. Get a friend or family-member if necessary.
    • A good idea is to make a monster story for Halloween, Santa or Reindeer story for Christmas, and Bunny/Egg/Chicken story for Easter.
  • Use a projector to create flickering light if this is what you are going for.

Warnings
  • Be careful if using candles, lamps are recommended.
  • Be careful when cutting out the cardboard-box and paper.

Things You'll Need
  • Light-source (lamp, candle, etc)
  • Screen (Baking paper)
  • Cardboard box
  • Wooden sticks or straws
  • Paper (A strong type of paper is even better)
  • Tape
  • Sofa or table where you can hide behind
