NUC To Integrate Autism Studies In University Curriculum

The National Universities Commission (NUC) on Thursday said it would include the study of Autism in its university curriculum.

Its Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, said this at a one-day seminar organised by the commission in collaboration with Autism Care and Support Initiative (ACSI), an NGO in Abuja.

The theme of the seminar is ”The need for professional awareness and capacity building in the field of special education in Nigerian universities - a focus on autism.”

Okojie said autism should be viewed from a new perspective and beyond family because it was a national issue.

He said it was the responsibility of all to ensure care and management of the young and elderly in the society, especially those with special needs.

Okojie called on educators to devise means of making special education affordable and qualitative.
He explained further that the commission would convene a stakeholders meeting to chart a course for the effective management of autism.

Also, former Minister of Aviation, Dr Kema Chikwe, described NUC’s move as a “progressive idea to institutionalize the care of autism”.

Chikwe, said it was fundamental to train and have educated and experienced people to handle autism.
“If there is success in bringing autism issue into the curriculum, then the management of the disorder will be professional,” she noted. She also advised parents with autistic children to seek professional help in their upbringing and management.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of the Initiative, Dr Julia Ejiogu, said there was a need for professional awareness and capacity building in the field of special education with a focus on autism.
Ejiogu said children with autism often faced many challenges and stigma because of lack of awareness on the brain disorder.

She said the collaboration with NUC to integrate the studies into universities curriculum would help graduates understand the needs of the children for effective learning.

In his address, the Director of Academic Standards in the NUC, Prof. Alhassan Bichi, said that awareness on autism and care was not fully absorbed.
Bichi said the NUC planned to develop a curriculum that would dwell on the clinical and social aspects of autism. (NAN)

Don’t accredit varsities without counselling centres, Adeyemi tells NUC

Professor of Guidance and Counselling at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Adeyemi Idowu has recommended that the establishment of Counseling and Human Development Centres (CHDC) should be a prerequisite for institutional accreditation of universities by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Idowu, who is the Provost, Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo State, said this while delivering the 145th inaugural lecture of UNILORIN, entitled: “Raising the bar: The Counselor’s Mandate”.

He lamented that contrary to a government directive on the establishment of CHDC, several universities, both public and private, have not yielded to the order.

He warned that unless the issue of counselling is adequately addressed, there is the danger that Nigeria will, for a long time, continue to be a nation of unrealised hopes and unfulfilled promises.

Idowu said the refusal of full accreditation should equally be extended to Colleges of Education and Polytechnics that fail to establish the centres, which are meant to assist students in dealing with possible challenges that can affect their behaviour and psychological make-up while in school.

LASU: VC Embarrasses Shabbily Dressed Matriculants

Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University separated and embarrassed the shabbily dressed freshers as the school matriculated matriculates 1,119 new students.

The students numbering over 70, were initially barred from entering the university’s new auditorium, venue of the matriculation which saw 1, 119 candidates matriculating of the 1,582 candidates offered provisional admission. After the procession of principal officers of the university into the auditorium, they were allowed in, but were asked to sit upstairs to separate them from students who were properly dressed.

In his opening remarks, Obafunwa, who asked the shabbily dressed freshers to stand for recognition said: “Before I begin with my address, if you all look up there, you will see some matriculants who didn’t dress well to today’s matriculation. Some are not on their matriculation gown, some put on slippers, others put on chains, necklaces, which does not speak well of a university student.

You can imagine you going for a job interview and you dress shabbily, you would already know the results. You would actually have disqualified yourself from the beginning. Separating them from their colleagues who dressed well to this occasion sends a lot of messages. Most importantly, it shows that the university never tolerates any form of indecent dressing and behaviour among students.”

The students who showed remorse, were however, pardoned and asked to take their seats, after pleas from the Chairman of LASU Parents Forum, and principal officers of the university.

According to breakdown of matriculants, Faculty of Arts, matriculated 126 students; Faculty of Management Sciences, 193; Faculty of Social Sciences, 194; Faculty of Science, 196; Faculty of Education, 89; Faculty of Law, 120; School of Communication, 27; College of Medicine (Physiology inclusive), 104; Faculty of Engineering, 63 and School of Transport matriculated 7 students.
