Head of the Nigeria National Office of West African Examinations
Council,WAEC, Mr. Charles Eguridu has openly frowned at the idea of
making mathematics compulsory for all students seeking admission into
Higher institutions of learning when their course of study or area of
discipline has nothing to do with mathematics.
According to him, this is unfair. He made this statement during an interview following the release of WASSCE 2014.
Eguridu explained that as a student of Theatre Arts, you have no business learning quadratic equation.
“Somebody who wants to read Yoruba in the university, and the
institution is demanding for Mathematics is an issue because he does not
need Mathematics to perform well in Yoruba. I do not think Mathematical
ability is necessary for success in every endeavour of live.” He
asserted.
"Those who play football and can score goals, or those who can sing very
well, I am yet to see how passing Mathematics made them successful. For
English Language, I agree because it is the means of communication, but
for Maths, it should not compulsory for some studies," he added.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Akure Zone, in a
statement has warned the vice-chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof
John Obafunwa to stop victimising its members in the institution.
This was during its zonal press conference on the situation at LASU.
According to the association the actions of the Vice Chancellor are acts of witch-hunting, which the union leaders and members of the branch will no longer condone.
Excerpt of the statement signed by the coordinator of the zone and chairperson of ASUU-FUTA, Dr Alex Odiyi reads, “The administration of Prof John Obafunwa in the last few months has carried out acts of impunity and maladministration that touch on the very soul of the university. Notable among these are: Encouraging Parallel Senate through his meetings with HODs prior to Senate meetings, irregular appointment of the HODs and promotion of candidates that are neither appointable nor promotable.
“He appointed an individual as a professor with less than 15 papers contrary to the principles and rules governing promotions and appointments.
The vice chancellor subverted the University Laws and placed Professor Tunde Fatunde who is also the national president of the French Teachers Association of Nigeria on interdiction without any criminal offence”.

JABU Produces 19 First Class as 1,044 Graduates
The Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), during its 5th Convocation
ceremony held recently graduated 1,044 students. 19 students came out
with First Class Degree. Among the 19 students is Emmanuel Adebisi of
the Computer Science Department who emerged the best graduating student
with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.85.
It was further revealed that 279 students graduated with Second Class upper; 614, Second Class lower; while 126 had third class.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Sola Fajana, while speaking during the ceremony said that all courses offered by the institution are accredited.
“The University has continued to advance in all frontiers of learning. The visit of the National University Commission (NUC) Resource Verification Team to the proposed Law, Public Administration and International Relations Programmes last February, led to the approval of Law Programme for the university,” he said.
He charged the 1,044 graduands to create positive things and be good ambassadors of the university.

The Shocking State Of UNN
An article was published in the Vanguard newspaper dated 27th December
2014 regarding the state of University Nigeria Nsukka. The article which
made a comparison between the University of Ghana and the University of
Nigera, Nsukka revealed some shocking differences.
While the former was relatively a conducive learning environment with the necessary amenities that an institution of such standard should have, the latter being the University of Nigeria Nsukka was a direct opposite.
According to the article, multitude of Uncompleted projects littered everywhere, grasses had Turned to bushes and hedges were untrammeled, free and wild. Many buildings were pale, washed and battered. Hostels were in shambles .
The Enugu campus that houses faculties of Law and Medicine has no pipe borne water. The state of the toilet facilities in Enugu campus can only be imagined.
A chat with some female students of that campus revealed that students have buckets for defecating.
They defecate in the open, along the toilet corridor, many at a time, facing themselves, into buckets and hurl the contents afterward into the toilet Bowls, leaving trails of feces for the cleaners who come when they wish to effect as much cleaning as they can.
The buckets are subsequently rinsed with scarce water ,which they have to buy , and kept in the rooms until when again needed. Those who cannot stand the bucket idea defecate into polythene bags and fling them onto a heap behind the hostels.
That heap has survived generations . Its pathetic.
An Alumni exists but the atrocity has persisted.
The Vice chancellors residence is state of the art,
new. The vice chancellor has managed to ensconce himself in five star comfort while students are dehumanized . Don't ask me who is being groomed there. Perhaps pit toilets , since they cannot have water, may actually restore some dignity.
Its that bad. Students learning early how to be wild. The school’s internet network system functions so abysmally slowly that I could not use it . Lecturers and students can hardly do meaningful online researches in that remote location. A senior lecturer told me she sends articles to foreign journals using her blackberry phone. That is the story of Nigeria .
And ironically the school’s motto reads: To restore the dignity of man. Ghanas 2015 budget is 50 percent donor funded, Nigeria is rich and lives on her own money. Legon is to a great extent insulated from political and local administrative changes because Legon has a tradition.
A tradition that all must follow. That entrenched
tradition is the institution. So while projects in
Legon are completed before others are started,
and buildings are repainted yearly, Nsukka is a
picture of haphazardness and planlessness.
An environment of order and good tradition will
culture , nurture and instill order and virtue in
young minds but if you sow disorder , you will
reap disorder.
Often Nigerian academics sneer at the politicians
claiming they are superficial, flimsy, selfish,
shortsighted and wasteful. But Nsukka indicts Our
academics.
And Its not just about funding. And Nsukka is not alone ,other public universities are perhaps worse. Nsukka is a reflection of our society .University of Ghana indicts all of us. And we shamelessly now troop there in droves in search of better tertiary education for our children.

FG Set to Establish Polytechnics & Colleges of Education in Every State
The Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau is set to establish
polytechnics and colleges of education in states where such institutions
are non-existent.
According to him it is the intention of the present administration to ensure that each state in the country has a federal polytechnic and a college of education.
“Mr President has two main focuses on education sector, to increase access and improve the quality of education at all levels.’’
“Education is the bedrock of any socio-economic and political development, hence we need to equip our educational institutions with up-to-date infrastructure and relevant text books to improve the quality’’, he said
The minister said that the government would continue to pay attention to the sector in order to improve the socio-economic status of the people.

UNILORIN Matriculates 12,650 for 2014/2015 Session
The University of Ilorin recently matriculated 12,650 students for its 2014/2015 academic session.
It was learnt that 80 of the matriculates are foreign students.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof AbdulGaniyu Ambali while speaking at the ceremony told the matriculating students to be grateful to God.
In his words, “…..the first important thing is that you should be grateful, grateful to God who makes everything possible; grateful to your parents and guardians who have seen you to this stage.
“I know some of you would wonder why you should be grateful to the university since you are qualified and your effort brought you here. The truth is that the university is creating more space for those who are qualified.
“For example, only 8,591 students could be admitted last academic session but we have increased the space so that additional thousands were added above the number we admitted last session. As the saying goes, many are called but few are chosen.”

LASU Has Concluded Plans to Refund Excess Fee Paid by Students - VC
As contained in a bulletin released by the Lagos State University, the
management’s plans to facilitate the refund of the extra amount paid by
some students as school fees following the reduction of the school fees
by the state government has been concluded.
In the bulletin, it was noted that the management has submitted a request to the state government for a refund of N843 million to the affected students.
The request had since been reviewed by the Lagos State ministries of Education and Economic Planning and Budget.
It was learnt that the final document would be submitted to the Lagos State Executive Council for approval.
While speaking concerning this, the Vice Chancellor of LASU, Prof John Obafunwa, said that most of the students are asking that the money should be deducted from the next session’s fees.
He however noted that the suggestion is coming late since a request for a refund has been submitted to the state government and has been approved.
"It won’t be possible again to deduct the difference from the next session fees.” He Stated.
Parents, guardians and the students has been assured that the refund would be done as soon as the money was released by the government.

Rabiu Musa Kwan-kwaso College of Advance & Remedial Studies to be Established in Kano State
The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a bill for the establishment
of Rabiu Musa Kself-servicewaso College of Advance and Remedial
Studies.
It was learnt that the bill was passed unanimously by the members.
According to the Majority Leader of the assembly and member representing Rano Constituency, Alhaji Kabiru Alhassan, the decision to establish the college was necessary to help students are not able to gain admission into university or other higher institutions due to O'level deficiencies.
“The college was provided with a laboratory with all the needed equipment installed in it.
“Also, a research centre was provided in the college to allow them carry out any kind of research”, he stated.
Alhassan said specialists in education from Bayero University and Wudil University of Technology would be given the responsibility of moving the college to higher levels.

OAU Admission Policy:What Many Don't Know About it
Over the past two months,i have read a lot of comments and complaints
from many students residing in different parts of Nigeria on the
admission policies of the Primus University in Nigeria,Obafemi Awolowo
University Ile Ife.
The students complained on various issues like inadequate time for the post utme exam,high cut off marks set by their department of choice and some who were fortunate enough to make the cut off marks could not find their names on both the merit and supplementary admission list,why,why,why,that is the question they are asking.
Hence,there is need to educate the public on some factors which are "sine qua non" for every students who hoped to have a smooth admission into Oba Awon university,after a careful consideration of the comments and complaints,I decide to discuss on the reasons why many students have been unlucky.
First of all,my school,OAU is an institution that never joke with three admission factors(jamb subjects combination,post utme score and the cut off marks for each of her numerous departments),with the use of English which is compulsory for all courses,these are the accepted jamb combinations for some faculties.
1.Faculty of administration-Econs,Govt and Maths(EGM).
2-faculty of social science-econs,geography and maths or econs,govt and maths(EGM).
3-faculty of technology-Chemistry,Maths/Physics(CMP).
4-faculty of engineering-Chemistry/Maths/Physics(CMP).
5-Faculty of Arts-C.R.K/Literature in Eng/History or Govt(CLH or CLG).
6-Faculty of Health Science-Biology,Chemistry and Physics(BCP).
Other faculties not included should be sought for but take note,OAU does not accept commerce in any of her courses,in fact,even after admission,it can make registration very cumbersome because commerce is not required as one of the five O'level subjects requirements.
Secondly,irrespective of his/her jamb score,a candidate will be considered for admission only if such candidate score 200 and above in the post utme exam.
Thirdly,the departmental cut off is the most important factor that has no subtitute,once a candidate can attain or beat the cut off mark for their department,then such candidate is already home and dry for admission is 100%.
From the foregoing,it is an incontrovertible fact that the bulk of students that complain of high handedness on OAU admission policy haven't done their home work well before applying,hence the complaints.

The students complained on various issues like inadequate time for the post utme exam,high cut off marks set by their department of choice and some who were fortunate enough to make the cut off marks could not find their names on both the merit and supplementary admission list,why,why,why,that is the question they are asking.
Hence,there is need to educate the public on some factors which are "sine qua non" for every students who hoped to have a smooth admission into Oba Awon university,after a careful consideration of the comments and complaints,I decide to discuss on the reasons why many students have been unlucky.
First of all,my school,OAU is an institution that never joke with three admission factors(jamb subjects combination,post utme score and the cut off marks for each of her numerous departments),with the use of English which is compulsory for all courses,these are the accepted jamb combinations for some faculties.
1.Faculty of administration-Econs,Govt and Maths(EGM).
2-faculty of social science-econs,geography and maths or econs,govt and maths(EGM).
3-faculty of technology-Chemistry,Maths/Physics(CMP).
4-faculty of engineering-Chemistry/Maths/Physics(CMP).
5-Faculty of Arts-C.R.K/Literature in Eng/History or Govt(CLH or CLG).
6-Faculty of Health Science-Biology,Chemistry and Physics(BCP).
Other faculties not included should be sought for but take note,OAU does not accept commerce in any of her courses,in fact,even after admission,it can make registration very cumbersome because commerce is not required as one of the five O'level subjects requirements.
Secondly,irrespective of his/her jamb score,a candidate will be considered for admission only if such candidate score 200 and above in the post utme exam.
Thirdly,the departmental cut off is the most important factor that has no subtitute,once a candidate can attain or beat the cut off mark for their department,then such candidate is already home and dry for admission is 100%.
From the foregoing,it is an incontrovertible fact that the bulk of students that complain of high handedness on OAU admission policy haven't done their home work well before applying,hence the complaints.

UNILORIN Admitted 12,650 out of 114,700 Candidates
The Vice chancellor of the University of Ilorin Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali
during the matriculation ceremony disclosed that the institution
admitted only 12,650 students out of the 114,700 applicants.
He further stated that out of the 114,700 applicants only 41,470 met the cut-off mark 180 in UTME to qualify for the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination screening.
The number of successful students who passed the post-UTME according to the VC was 22,601. While the number of students final admitted were 12,650 with 80 being international students.

The ten awardees were presented with their certificates of awards at the Etisalat Merit Award Ceremony which was held on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
During the ceremony, five (5) tertiary institutions selected for the 2014 Etisalat Merit Award exercise also received One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100, 000.00) each. The five institutions are: University of Lagos, Lagos; Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun State; Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Osun State; Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State and University of Benin, Edo State.

Oxford's Skoll Scholarships in Social Entrepreneurship for International Masters Students
The Skoll Scholarship is a competitive scholarship for incoming MBA students at Oxford University who pursue entrepreneurial solutions for urgent social and environmental challenges.
The Scholarship provides funding and exclusive opportunities to meet with world-renowned entrepreneurs, thought-leaders and investors. Once selected, these students are known as Skoll Skollars.
The Skoll scholarship provides tuition for social entrepreneurs who have set up or have been working in social enterprises, and who wish to improve their knowledge of market-oriented practices so they can be more effective in their subsequent social change pursuits.
The scholarship will cover the whole length of the program
No more than five scholarships will be awarded in any year.
Scholarship Benefits
The Skoll Scholarship covers full costs of Said Business School tuition and college fees. The Scholarship also covers partial living expenses based on need, up to an additional £8,000.
The Scholarship Committee assesses need based on previous earnings, geographical location, and future earning potential. Students will be responsible for meeting the financial guarantee by other means necessary. In exceptional cases, the Scholarship Committee may consider requests for full scholarship coverage up to the financial guarantee.
CRITERIA
To be eligible for the Skoll Scholarship, you must be accepted to the Oxford MBA programme, and meet the following criteria:
Candidates must have started or worked in a social venture for 12 months or longer.
Candidates must demonstrate evidence of personal qualities strongly resonating with social entrepreneurship leadership, and illustrate how these have influenced their career path thus far. These qualities include:
Single-mindedness and persistence in pursuit of a social benefit goal, including a willingness to face failure and start again
A bias towards action rather than reflection
A tendency to explore the environment for opportunities and resources
A willingness to take personal, and sometimes financial, risks
A habit of developing a network and subtly or unsubtly exploiting its members.
Candidates must demonstrate how a business education can contribute to the wider development of the community they work with in the social entrepreneurship movement. They will need to illustrate why a business degree at this stage of their career trajectory can help them amplify their impact.
Candidates must demonstrate some evidence of their need for the scholarship. This may be exhibited, for example, in previous work experiences or personal backgrounds which make self-funding the MBA a significant financial burden.
Criterion for selection is based on the following:
All the candidates are required to take the GMAT test for entry to Oxford’s MBA programme.
Candidates whose first language is not English or who have not studied at an English speaking University are required to take either the TOEFL or IELTS tests.

HOW TO APPLY
In order to apply for the Skoll Scholarship you first need to apply and be accepted onto the Saïd Business School's MBA programme. To be formally considered for a Skoll Scholarship, you need to state your interest in the "Scholarships" section of the online MBA application form, found on the official website.
When your MBA application is submitted, the MBA admissions team will first assess your application to ensure that you meet the academic requirements sought by Saïd Business School. Then, if you are accepted into the MBA programme, the Skoll Centre will send you an essay question that needs to be completed in order for you to be considered for the Scholarship.
Please do not request the Skoll scholarship essay from the admission team – you will receive it from the Skoll Centre following your acceptance to the MBA programme.
NB: The Skoll Center cannot consider candidates who have not been accepted by the School for the MBA.

The Scholarship provides funding and exclusive opportunities to meet with world-renowned entrepreneurs, thought-leaders and investors. Once selected, these students are known as Skoll Skollars.
The Skoll scholarship provides tuition for social entrepreneurs who have set up or have been working in social enterprises, and who wish to improve their knowledge of market-oriented practices so they can be more effective in their subsequent social change pursuits.
The scholarship will cover the whole length of the program
No more than five scholarships will be awarded in any year.
Scholarship Benefits
The Skoll Scholarship covers full costs of Said Business School tuition and college fees. The Scholarship also covers partial living expenses based on need, up to an additional £8,000.
The Scholarship Committee assesses need based on previous earnings, geographical location, and future earning potential. Students will be responsible for meeting the financial guarantee by other means necessary. In exceptional cases, the Scholarship Committee may consider requests for full scholarship coverage up to the financial guarantee.
CRITERIA
To be eligible for the Skoll Scholarship, you must be accepted to the Oxford MBA programme, and meet the following criteria:
Candidates must have started or worked in a social venture for 12 months or longer.
Candidates must demonstrate evidence of personal qualities strongly resonating with social entrepreneurship leadership, and illustrate how these have influenced their career path thus far. These qualities include:
Single-mindedness and persistence in pursuit of a social benefit goal, including a willingness to face failure and start again
A bias towards action rather than reflection
A tendency to explore the environment for opportunities and resources
A willingness to take personal, and sometimes financial, risks
A habit of developing a network and subtly or unsubtly exploiting its members.
Candidates must demonstrate how a business education can contribute to the wider development of the community they work with in the social entrepreneurship movement. They will need to illustrate why a business degree at this stage of their career trajectory can help them amplify their impact.
Candidates must demonstrate some evidence of their need for the scholarship. This may be exhibited, for example, in previous work experiences or personal backgrounds which make self-funding the MBA a significant financial burden.
Criterion for selection is based on the following:
All the candidates are required to take the GMAT test for entry to Oxford’s MBA programme.
Candidates whose first language is not English or who have not studied at an English speaking University are required to take either the TOEFL or IELTS tests.
Demonstrate evidence of need for financial support.
HOW TO APPLY
In order to apply for the Skoll Scholarship you first need to apply and be accepted onto the Saïd Business School's MBA programme. To be formally considered for a Skoll Scholarship, you need to state your interest in the "Scholarships" section of the online MBA application form, found on the official website.
When your MBA application is submitted, the MBA admissions team will first assess your application to ensure that you meet the academic requirements sought by Saïd Business School. Then, if you are accepted into the MBA programme, the Skoll Centre will send you an essay question that needs to be completed in order for you to be considered for the Scholarship.
Please do not request the Skoll scholarship essay from the admission team – you will receive it from the Skoll Centre following your acceptance to the MBA programme.
NB: The Skoll Center cannot consider candidates who have not been accepted by the School for the MBA.

DEADLINE

Adelaide Graduate Research Scholarships for International Students
A number of AGRS Scholarships may be available for international students from any country, who have recently graduated from the University of Adelaide, to undertake postgraduate research at the University of Adelaide.
For the normal duration of the program - 2 years for Masters degree by Research and 3 years for Doctoral research degree (an extension is possible for doctoral programs only)
Full TUITION FEES for the normal duration of the program and an ANNUAL LIVING ALLOWANCE.
The allowance will be paid for two years for a Masters degree by Research and three years for a Doctoral research degree (an extension is possible for doctoral programs only).
No other allowances will be paid.
The scholarship does not provide an Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) allowance.

complete their four year undergraduate degree including first class honours in a research based honours program at the University of Adelaide* in that semester OR have completed the above that year or in the previous year; or *This will be deemed to cover students who have completed all of their education at Adelaide and where the committee considers it appropriate students who have completed a lesser period of time but including the honours year.
be completing their masters degree** with a sufficient research component to be approved by the Research Education Development Committee as a degree acceptable for entry to the PhD (refer to the Academic Program Rules) at the University of Adelaide in that semester OR have completed the above that year or in the previous year; ** Students undertaking a coursework masters degree will be required to obtain an overall grade of Distinction with not less than a High Distinction in their research component(s) to be eligible for scholarships.

UK Universities: Wolfson Full Tuition Scholarships in Humanities for International, EU and UK Students
The Wolfson Foundation, through the Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships, offers doctoral (DPhil) research Scholarships in the Humanities to students of all nationalities to study at any one of nine carefully selected Universities in the UK.
The scholarship initiative reflects the Foundation's concerns about funding for the humanities and the potential impact of increased undergraduate student debt on postgraduate studies. Its aim is thus not only to support some of the most exciting students, but also to make a statement about the value of the humanities.
CRITERIA
The Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding humanities students who demonstrate the potential to make an impact on their chosen field.
International, EU and UK students are eligible. Note that some schools may award only UK or EU students only while others award more of international students.
The Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships will fund doctoral research in three disciplines that align closely with the Foundation’s interests:

Twenty seven scholarships are funded each year at nine universities across the UK.

Eligibility criteria:
You should be applying to start a new DPhil course in history, literature or languages at Oxford.
Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.

This scholarship is not open to candidates applying for part-time courses. This scholarship is also not open to applications from candidates who hold deferred offers to start in 2015-16.
The continuation of your scholarship each year is subject to an annual renewal process based upon satisfactory academic progress.
HOW TO APPLY
In order to be considered for this scholarship, you must submit applications for graduate study by the relevant January deadline for your chosen course, and must be successful in being offered a place of study after consideration of applications received by the relevant January deadline for the course.
If you do not apply by the deadline, you will not be considered for this scholarship. Course applications which are held over after the January deadline to be re-evaluated against applications received by the March deadline or course applications which have been put on a waiting list are not eligible for scholarship consideration..

2). University of Sheffield
Eligibility criteria:
You should have a strong academic record, including a first class or upper second class undergraduate degree and a Masters degree in a field of study relevant to your research (or equivalent qualifications).
You should be applying to start your first year of study on a full-time or part-time PhD with the University in the 2015-16 academic year (i.e. after 1st August 2015, exact start date to be agreed with your supervisor/ department) on a project which falls into one of the broad categories of history, literature or languages.
Awards are open to UK, EU and international applicants.
How to apply:
Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis - applications are assessed on the basis of academic success and qualifications, experience, research background, a clear well-articulated research proposal, the potential impact of the research and a good match with supervisor/ departmental expertise.
The closing date for Wolfson Postgraduate scholarship applications is Tuesday 3rd February 2015 at 12 noon. Late applications will not be accepted in any circumstances.

HOW TO APPLY
In order to be considered for this scholarship, you must submit applications for graduate study by the relevant January deadline for your chosen course, and must be successful in being offered a place of study after consideration of applications received by the relevant January deadline for the course.
If you do not apply by the deadline, you will not be considered for this scholarship. Eligibility criteria:
You should have a strong academic record, including a first class or upper second class undergraduate degree and a Masters degree in a field of study relevant to your research (or equivalent qualifications).
You should be applying to start your first year of study on a full-time or part-time PhD with the University in the 2015-16 academic year (i.e. after 1st August 2015, exact start date to be agreed with your supervisor/ department) on a project which falls into one of the broad categories of history, literature or languages.
Awards are open to UK, EU and international applicants.

Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis - applications are assessed on the basis of academic success and qualifications, experience, research background, a clear well-articulated research proposal, the potential impact of the research and a good match with supervisor/ departmental expertise.

Study In UK: Commonwealth Shared Scholarships for Developing Countries
The Commonwealth Shared Scholarships (CSS) Scheme allows students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK to benefit from postgraduate study at a University in the UK which will help them to contribute toward the development of their home countries.
Awards made under this scheme are jointly funded by the Department for International Development (DFID), as part of the UK international development programme to developing countries, and participating institutions in the UK.
The scheme is administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC), whose secretariat is provided by The Association of Commonwealth Universities.
Commonwealth Shared Scholarships (CSS) Scheme
Up to 227 scholarship positions.
To date, in excess of 2,500 students from developing Commonwealth countries have been awarded Shared Scholarships.
Awards are normally tenable for one-year taught postgraduate courses only
The CSC funds the cost of tuition fees (at overseas rate), return airfares, and other allowances. Participating universities are required to support the student stipend for the award holder (at the rate set by the UK government).
CRITERIA
To apply for a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, candidates must:
Be Commonwealth citizens, refugees, or British protected persons

Be available to commence their academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2015

HOW TO APPLY
All applications must be made through the university at which you wish to study. You must check with them in the first instance for specific advice on eligibility and how to make an application, and for their own closing date.
To apply for a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, you must use one of two methods (as instructed by the university you are applying to):
Via university: Applying to the university in the first instance using the university’s own application form. If selected, candidates will then be asked to submit an application to the CSC using the EAS. Any applications made via the EAS only and not directly to the university first will not be considered.

Awards made under this scheme are jointly funded by the Department for International Development (DFID), as part of the UK international development programme to developing countries, and participating institutions in the UK.
The scheme is administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC), whose secretariat is provided by The Association of Commonwealth Universities.
Commonwealth Shared Scholarships (CSS) Scheme
Up to 227 scholarship positions.
To date, in excess of 2,500 students from developing Commonwealth countries have been awarded Shared Scholarships.
Awards are normally tenable for one-year taught postgraduate courses only
The CSC funds the cost of tuition fees (at overseas rate), return airfares, and other allowances. Participating universities are required to support the student stipend for the award holder (at the rate set by the UK government).
CRITERIA
To apply for a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, candidates must:
Be Commonwealth citizens, refugees, or British protected persons
Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country (a full list of eligible countries is available in the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships 2015 prospectus - link to it is below)
Be available to commence their academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2015
Hold, by October 2015, a first degree of at least upper second class Honours standard
Not have undertaken studies lasting one year or more in a developed country
Be unable themselves, or through their families, to pay to study in the UK
Sponsoring institutions must confirm that candidates are sufficiently fluent in written and oral English to pursue their proposed studies immediately, as no pre-course English Language Teaching is available under these awards.

You choose the grades you want by the decisions you make and the actions you take. Your lecturers only give you the grades you choose. Below are five qualities that you must cultivate if you must become a first class student:

1.Dedication:
This is the quality of being devoted to something. Are you devoted to that goal you want to achieve? Dedication shows up in class or lecture attendance, amount of time spent revising notes and studying and so on.
2.Discipline:
Every first class student knows what it means to delay self-gratification. Studying is not always as interesting as watching a movie or playing a video game. Discipline is the practice of training oneself to ensure acceptable and desired patterns of behavior.
You must always remind yourself that your future and
the kind of life you will have tomorrow depends on the
decisions you make today. You must pay the price to sow good seeds today so that you can reap the desired harvest tomorrow.
3.Perseverance:
Encarta tells us this word means steady and continued action or belief, usually over a long period and especially despite difficulties or setbacks. In other words, a first class student will say no to compromise and laxity when it’s time to study, to pray, to go for lectures or to do those things that he is supposed
to do.
4.Prayer:
Every first class student knows that to trust in one’s might, strength and ability alone is foolishness. You must take seriously your closet where you communicate with God and draw strength, wisdom and enablement from Him. If you do not have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, you need to enter into a relationship with Him.
4.Balance:
This one is also very important because this is where so many students miss it. The university is not a place for solely reading and studying to obtain a degree though this is the primary purpose. It’s a platform for acquiring knowledge that will help you build a future for yourself, for discovering your purpose in life and for general all-round self-development.
You must
engage yourself in other activities that will develop you spiritually, intellectually, physically, morally, socially and even financially. Get adequate rest also, very important. It’s not in the amount of ‘night classes.’
