The Vicar-General, Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Rev. Fr. Innocent Jooji, has called on members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect to stop using religion for the destruction of lives and property.
The cleric also said security operatives must treat all information given to them by the members of the public with utmost confidentiality.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the parish priest said the fight against terrorism could not be solved without full participation of citizens.
He said, “We pray that those who are fomenting trouble should try and refrain from it. Religion should never be used as a vehicle to destroy human lives and property; but, it should be a vehicle that should be used to unite and love because we preach love, forgiveness, reconciliation and unity. We must not contradict this.
“Government is doing its best, but its best has not been enough. If we need to curb the Boko Haram threat, the bombings and killings, everybody must be involved because the government is everybody. The government at the helm of affairs is doing its part, but the security challenge in the country is everybody’s business.”
Jooji said the people would be reluctant to divulge information if they felt that their identities would be revealed.
“Our security agents should learn to protect the identities of any person that gives information about any suspected terrorists and treat it with confidentiality and competence, that would go a long way to help in this security challenges,” he stressed.
