Rep Reports: ‘NUC’s accreditation procedure is fraudulent’

The House of Representatives on Thursday faulted the procedure for accreditation of academic programmes of Nigerian universities by the National Universities Commission.

It said the procedure appeared to be “fraudulent” as it was designed to favour institutions willing to do the “bidding of the leadership of the NUC.”

In a resolution passed in Abuja, the House condemned the “imbalance” in accreditation of programmes.

The House asked its Committee on Education to investigate the matter and determine whether Nigerian universities met the minimum standards of accreditation.

“The House resolves to mandate the committee to determine whether or not the procedure for regulating Nigerian universities should be reviewed to enable Nigeria to meet international standard and then curtail the capital flight arising from Nigerians patronising foreign universities,” the resolution added.

A lawmaker from Lagos State, Mr. Abayomi Abdul-Kabir, who moved a motion on the subject, said over the years, there had been allegations that the NUC favoured particular areas while accrediting programmes.

He told the House that programmes were accredited in many universities where there were no requisite facilities to support learning, while institutions that met the criteria were denied accreditation.

The lawmaker added, “The House is disturbed that the procedure for selecting accreditation officials lacks credibility and is biased in favour of only members of the academia capable of doing the bidding of the leadership of the NUC.

“The House feels that the process of accreditation ought to recognise some levels of performance, quality and integrity, which engender confidence from the public and the academic community.”

Unemployment After School: Discover how to help yourself!

This article discusses the different reasons for unemployment and how undergraduates can make money while preparing for graduate life.

For more information visit www.campusflava.com

Unemployment rate is high. Why? Some say its because of excessive corruption. No it's not.
Or Is it from the Universities? Definitely not.
Our graduates are unemployed because of a plethora of reasons.
The main reason being laziness and tenacious fantasies.
In terms of communication, our graduates cannot make a complete sentence. Their grasp of the English language is so poor that interviewers find it hard to understand them (I'm a young employer).
Basic English language should be learnt in nursery, Primary school and high school only. Before you get admitted into a university, they believe you are an adult that can think for him/herself. A university teaches you how to survive in life, and not how to speak English or force you to read. Most students dont like reading, they learn to speak by hearing and emulation. You hear things like"...according to Sen. Patrick Obahiagbon...". They want to learn the fanciful words before learning when to differentiate between 'their' and 'there'.
So dont blame our universities for our poor graduates' vocabularies.

Next, unemployment is high because our graduates just wanted to enter a university because it was the 'in thing' or they just want to be called a 'graduate'.

They don't know that a University prepares one for the harsh reality of life. That's why you should always develop your talent; study a course based on your talent.

Next, unemployment is high because our graduates have no plans after graduation.
Their plans are to
1. graduate,
2. enjoy nysc,
3. get a 7am-6pm Job with a successful bank,
4. get enlisted as one of those soon to be fired after a massive shake up in the bank,
5. get fired,
6. repeats from no 3
...and the cycle continues...but these people still fantasize on being as rich as Dangote. How?

Now, this is where I'll put the blame on Nigerian Universities. No pun intended but our education sector is still a slave to our colonial masters.

We're still making use of the British system of education, that basically teaches you how to 'carry on' in life, instead of the American system of education that teaches you how to 'start from scratch and survive' in life.

Little wonder Britain is so small and America is so large. A graduate of the American system doesn't have the mindset to 'work for someone'. He/she wants to start something new....and there're alot of new things to be discovered, just look around and think outside the box.
Let me tell you a bit about myself. I used my brilliance to tout around, jumping from different Nigerian universities till I was almost 28.

One day, I told myself that my life is going nowhere. At 28, not a graduate, no investments, nothing. I was just a nobody.

I got admission into a University in US. I promised to study, and I really studied. I didn't have a choice, my sponsor warned me that I'll have to work and study. Only my tuition, accommodation and fees will be paid, directly into the schools account.

I didn't want to work, so after about 2 months, my account was in the red, no source of money for that semester. It affected my studies for sometime till I thought of a plan to make money while maintaining my steadfast studiousness.

I drafted a list of all my Instructors (lecturers). I knew I had excellent grades so it wouldn't be difficult to get money off them. Before the end of that semester, I was almost $3000 richer from teacher-begging.

But I didn't know that good things still awaited. One of the lecturer advised me to apply for a scholarship. That it would make finances easier on me and my sponsor. I though that was a good Idea, till I advanced on it; I decided to apply for scholarship and not tell my sponsor.

I was on scholarship throughout my undergrad days. My sponsor paid my fees directly into the school account, even if I told the person that I was on scholarship, he/she wouldn't believe me.

So I read, maintained my A+ grades, collected money from instructors, the school president, the dean (they are always happy to help an honor student).

My main motivation was the money piling up in the school account. If you know the tuition and fees of unis in the states, do the math...calculate 5 full semesters and 4 summer semesters....that's how much that was waiting for me when I graduated (when you graduate, the school gives you all excess monies in your school account).

This can be applied in Nigerian Universities.
That's how I got the finances to start up and be my own boss.

Try and see money where no one sees it.
I immediately pursued my masters without delay. And now I've invested and set.

Being a humble Nigerian, I want to serve my country briefly for 10yrs and fully expend my skills there...while watching my investments grow.

You want to know a little secret? Someone posted my undergraduate graduation profile here on fp here sometime in 2012.

I urge students to try and think outside the box. There are alot...a damn lot...of ways to make money to propel you and your plans to the future, just make use of your only true friend...your brain. It's begging you to use it.
You guys should really stop graduating from school, just to contribute to the rate of unemployment in Nigeria.

Graduates Decry Delay In Certificate Issuance - Gbenga Adeniji

Graduates of tertiary institutions in Nigeria contend with the stress of obtaining their certificates.

Miss Ugochi Nwachukwu graduated from the Department of Mass Communication, University of Nigeria Nsukka in November 2010. She was happy to have scaled the hurdles of clearance in some of the varsity’s units and was glad about embarking on the compulsory one-year National Youth Serve Corps scheme.

After her service year, she went back to her alma mater in order to obtain her certificate. Nwachukwu never suspected there would be delay in the collection of the certificate.

The workers in the university’s Exam and Records department however kept asking her to go and return at a later date.

She said, ‘‘My result was not released with the first batch because of the slow manner of working on our files. I had duly completed the required clearance. After my result was released, I went to collect my certificate but was told it was not ready.

I was issued a statement of result with which I embarked on the compulsory one-year National Youth Service Corps scheme. But it was only tenable for a year after which one is expected to collect his or her certificate. I went to the school many times but the Exams and Records section was unable to give me any reason why my certificate was not ready.’’

It took her many trips to the university before luck smiled on her and she was able to collect her certificate. She noted that it was important for tertiary institutions to start early processing of the certificates of final year students once their results had been approved in order to forestall delay.

The Public Relations Officer of UNN, Mr. Gabriel Ndu, said he was handling an emergency after he patiently listened to the request of our correspondent that he should comment on the development.

He stated, ‘‘I am in an emergency right now. I will get back to you.’’

Nwachukwu is however not the only graduate who has experienced frustration in the course of trying to collect certificates. Mr. Abayomi Adebowale who studied in one of the external centres of the Lagos State University also has a similar experience. In his own case, he graduated in 2008 but could not collect his certificate until after three years.

Our correspondent learn't that it was even easy for his set because some of those who graduated after them were still going to the institution to collect their certificates.

‘‘I am not sure if full-time students of the school experience the same thing but it is common among part-time students. It is important that the school authorities look into the case because part-time students pay more than full-time especially in this regime of high school fees,’’ he said.

Adebowale also linked the problem of delay in the issuance of certificates to the backlog of results of the institution’s part-time graduates.

One of the full-time graduates of the institution, Mr. Tunde Oyelami, however said graduates obtain their certificates after tendering their statements of results.

‘‘It did not take me long to collect my certificate. I graduated in 2003 and collected my certificate in 2004. Once a graduate presents his or her statement of result after being cleared, getting his certificate cannot be difficult.

Even my master’s certificate is ready but I have not collected it because I have not completed clearance. Those who studied in the university’s external centres may have their certificates delayed because of other reasons. But for full-time graduates, it is not hard to collect certificates,’’ he added.

The university’s Acting Director, Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations, Dr. Sola Fosudo, told our correspondent that any student having problems in collecting his or her certificate should write to the varsity’s vice-chancellor.

Abiola Morakinyo, who studied Master of Business Administration (Executive) from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, said it took him five years to get his certificate.

He said after his set graduated in 2008 and held its convocation in December 11, 2009, their certificates were only issued to them in 2013 after several complaints. Morakinyo added that the school authorities later told them that his set was inadvertently omitted.

A graduate of OAU, Mrs. Abigail Fadehan, however said it was not difficult collecting a certificate from the university once a graduate fulfils all obligations.

She said, ‘‘By a graduate fulfilling all obligations, I mean ensuring he or she undergoes prompt clearance in the required units; bursary, library, department and so on. I know that OAU certificates are issued to deserving graduates immediately after convocation. It is the same with transcripts. It did not take me a year to collect my certificate while it took me just two days to get my transcripts.’’

Fadehan’s claim was corroborated by the PRO of OAU, Mr. Biodun Olanrewaju.

Olanrewaju said the school authorities issue certificates to final year students immediately the Senate approves their results.

He stated, ‘‘The process of collecting certificates in OAU used to be simple but we have now made it simpler. We have a computerised system which makes it easy to issue certificates to our graduates after convocation. Once a graduate has done the required clearance, we commence the process of issuance. Though we have a forgery-proof system in place, we often ask the owners to come for collection in order to authenticate that we are giving the certificate to the original owner.’’

Timothy Francis, who graduated from the University of Lagos in 2008, said he was unable to collect his certificate from the university on time because of what he described as ‘administrative bottlenecks.’

He added that he couldn’t find some of the receipts he needed to tender in a particular unit for clearance. ‘‘I was virtually moving from one office to the other because there was no way I could get cleared without the receipt. It was later I got everything sorted out and that was two years after graduation. Things seem to have changed now because of the advent of technology. I also think the reason some people have not collected their certificates is because there are some conditions that their universities have set for them to meet,’’ he said.

According to him, tertiary institutions should design processes to make it easy for genuine graduates to collect their certificates after convocation.

It was learnt that in order to check errors, the UNILAG authorities have recently put in place an arrangement to monitor certificates while processing them.

The Directorate of Academic Affairs has initiated a certificate processing form which final year students could download and make corrections where necessary.

A graduate of the Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger State, Timothy Oriloye, said he collected his certificate a year after graduation because he was determined to overcome any problem that could hinder him.

‘‘Some students are the cause of the reason why they do not get their certificates on time. They defer what they are supposed to do till the last minute, ’’ he said.

Skales officially parts ways with EME

We all saw this coming right? Skales has parted ways with EME records .His contract expired and they decided not to renew his contract because it wasn't profitable any more. They have spent alot on him though the years and haven't recouped their investment .All traces of EME has been deleted from his social media accounts .Though unsigned, he is with M.et.tal management.
Wizkid and Skales were signed in 2010 and Skales who was signed on as a rapper later transformed into a singer. Banky had once told a magazine that his mistake was not letting Skales fully develop or find his niche before signing him.Contrary to rumours that the label asked him to sing, it was actually Skales who decided to start singing. Perhaps looking at his mate Wizkid succeed in music made him lose his initial stance as a rapper

The Netng also confirmed this from Banky W..

Wish him the best..He is actually very talented

The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences is a successor to the Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS), which was a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam. MUCHS was established by an Act of Parliament, Act No. 9 of 1991, when the then Faculty of Medicine was upgraded to a college. The Faculty of Medicine originated from the Dar es Salaam School of Medicine, which was established in 1963 by the Ministry of Health with the primary aim of training clinical health staff. In 1968, the Dar es Salaam School of Medicine was upgraded to a Faculty of Medicine of the Dar es Salaam University College of the University of East Africa. In 1976 the Faculty of Medicine was incorporated into Muhimbili Hospital to form the Muhimbili Medical Centre (MMC).
In 1991, the Faculty of Medicine was upgraded to a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam, with the aim of nurturing it to a full-fledged university. In 2000 the Government by Act of Parliament disestablished MMC and created two closely linked but autonomous public institutions: MUCHS and the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH). Over the years MUCHS made significant achievements in increased student enrollment and development of several new academic programmes. The Parliament Act No. 9 of 1991 that established MUCHS was repealed in 2005. In 2007, MUHAS was established by Article 1 of the Charter of Incorporation, in line with the recommendations of the Tanzania Commission of Universities.

Ardhi University

Ardhi University (ARU) is a public university in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It was established 28 March 2007, though it has been offering training for more than 60 years in different status. It is situated on Observation Hill close to University of Dar es Salaam, in which it was a constituent college from 1996-2007, when it was known as University College of Lands and Architectural Studies—UCLAS. Prior being part of University of Dar es Salaam, Ardhi University was known as Ardhi Institute with history extending to mid-1950s.
Today, academic activities at the university are generated in six schools: of Architecture and Design; of Construction Economics and Management; of Geospatial Sciences and Technology; of Real Estates Studies; of Urban and Regional Planning; and of Environmental Sciences and Technology. The number of academic staff with doctoral degrees has increased from three in 1996 to 43 in 2008.

he university was established under University Act No 7 of 2005, and came into being after the signing of Ardhi University Charter by the President of United Republic of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete on 28 March 2007. The roots of Ardhi University can be traced back to pre-independence days when a Surveying Training School offering technician certificate courses in land surveying was established in Dar es Salaam.
In 1974, the name was changed to Ardhi Institute and its range of courses expanded to include building design and building economics. In the early 1980s, the public health engineering course (later renamed ‘environmental engineering’) was introduced. In 1996 the Ardhi Institute became a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam, and ten years later was granted autonomy as Ardhi University. During the decade of association with the University of Dar es Salaam, the Ardhi Institute grew dramatically: the number of academic programmes on offer increased from six to 39, while the number of students grew from 400 to 1,400.
In 1979, the Centre for Housing Studies was established as joint project between the governments of Tanzania and the Netherlands. The centre has now grown into the Institute of Human Settlement Studies, which is involved in the ‘regularisation of informal settlements’, with which Dar es Salaam is plentifully endowed.

N30b Tertiary Education Fund Lie Fallow -report reveal

Tertiary institutions have failed to utilise about 30 billion naira education funds for four years.
The money is in the accounts of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund)  since 2009 as heads of tertiary institutions continually fail to meet the requirements for accessing them.
This is contain in the 2013 annual report of the Federal Ministry of Education which also said states have failed to access N50 billion  Ubec funds for  the said period.
According to the report Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education have not accessed over  30 billion naira allocated to them by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) from 2009 to 2012.
According to the report, universities did not access 1.87 billion in 2009, 4.441 billion in 2010, 11.124billion in 2011 and 16.202 billion in 2012.
The story is not different in the polytechnics which didn’t access 973.231 million in 2009, 1.826 billion in 2010, 6.101 billion in 2011 and 9.169 billion in 2012.
The reports says the Colleges of Education also didn’t access 631 million in 2009, 2.845 billion in 2010, 5.18 billion in 2011 and 8.672 billion in 2012.
The institutions’ problems include non-conformity with strategic plans, lack of concept of design and planning, insufficient documentation, faulty observance of due process and poor project management skills.
The report said “It is unfortunate that heads of institutions could not take advantage of the fund to improve the quality of their institutions. The Federal Ministry of Education, implores governing councils to take this issue as priority and ensure that all outstanding funds are accessed and utilised.
“It will also consider possible sanctions to force tertiary institutions to promptly access  their funds  with TETFund and other agencies.”
The spokesman of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Ibrahim Usman Yakasai said, “Any institution that fails to meet the requirement cannot access its funds.”
A source in the University of Abuja said poor proposal was among the factors preventing institutions from accessing their funds.
“There is no way the Federal Government can release the fund to an institution that presented poor proposal. The Federal Government has its priorities,” he said.

ASUU, UNILORIN Branch Commissions Hostel for Female Students

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ilorin branch, has completed the building of the first phase of its female hostel at the cost of N7.28million.

The project was commissioned by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali.

Speaking at the commissioning, the outgoing ASUU Chairman, Professor Wahab Egbewole, said the project was executed by the university without any form of external assistance from any quarters.

Professor Egbewole said the project was aimed at cushioning the effect of inadequate hostel facilities in the institution.
He explained that the union targeted the female students because they were the most vulnerable segment of the community.

He said: “We have watched with consternation the plights of our children struggling and scrambling for the limited number of rooms in the campus.

“A number of them have fallen victims of shylock landlords and wicked neighbours while living outside the campus.

“We, therefore, resolved to contribute our quota in alleviating the sufferings and challenges faced by these young and vulnerable minds by building an 80-bed hostel for them.”

Egbewole also urged the university authorities to improve both electricity and water supply in the campus.

Again, LASU Students Protest, Paralyse Activities In Alausa

For the umpteenth time, students of the Lagos State University, LASU, and Civil Society groups, yesterday, took to major roads before storming Lagos State House and state House of Assembly in protest against government decision not to reverse the hike in tuition fee.

As a result, normal business and traffic at Alausa and environs were partially halted for hours before the intervention of policemen and task-force officials who restored normalcy.

The irate students, who stormed Alausa at about 11 am, also claimed that all students had been directed to resume for academic session on February 24, as against the institution’s directive that only the final year students should do so.

The school management had last week directed that all final year students of the institution should resume for academic session to allow them engage in the national youth service.

The protesters, who chanted anti-government slogans, were armed with placards with different inscriptions.

Some of the inscriptions read: “Education is a right not a privilege”, “Adequate funding of education is non-negotiable”, “Reverse the tuition fees now” and others.

Some of the civil society groups which joined in the protest included Education Right Campaign, Joint Action Front, JAF and others.

ERC laments

The National Co-ordinator of Education Right Campaign, Mr. Hassan Soweto, who spoke on behalf of the students, lamented the harrowing experience of indigent students in paying such exorbitant tuition fee of N250,000.

Soweto noted that this was the root cause of LASU’s crises which led to the indefinite closure of the institution initially.

He lamented that the lawmakers were biased in their judgment by putting all the blames on the students rather than addressing the actual problem affecting the institution.

According to him, “I want to tell you that the hike in school fees since 2011 is the cause of the recurrent crises in LASU. The fee is one of the most expensive in the entire country.

“We think the House has acted in error. It is unfair to put all the blames on students. This is against the claims by the party that calls itself the progressive; it is undemocratic.”

House can reverse the fees —JAF

Also, Secretary General of JAF, Mr. Abiodun Aremu said: “The House has constitutional responsibility to reverse the fees. We are passionate to be here today because we know the lawmakers were beneficiaries of public education.”

He reiterated that it was quite unfortunate that the Lagos State government is aggravating the problem instead of finding ways to resolve the issue, adding: “Universities cannot be run by dictators so that the right of students would not be jeopardized.”

House lauds peaceful protest

Responding, Deputy Speaker, Kolawole Taiwo, said it was unfair for the protesters to lay claim that the House had been one sided in the way it handled the case.

According to him, the members passed resolution for the re-opening of the portal to allow students who were yet to register be given the opportunity.

Taiwo commended the courage of the students by being law-abiding despite being aggrieved about the current situation.

He said: “I want to assure you that the house would look into your complaints. We thank you for not taking laws into your hands. We shall do the needful.”

Nse Ikpe-Etim narrates her chilling true-life experience with jungle justice

Actress Nse Etim shared a chilling story about Jungle Justice on twitter(I had to copy it out to make it easy for reading)

"I'll tell you my experience #JungleJustice.I took a night bus to Aba some years ago from Abuja to the fabric market...After I had walked around and seen for myself, I went back to the park and decided to have a beer.I brought out my laptop and started writing...trying to blend in so I don't look out of place.I was scared but knew that in a few hours, I would be back home.As I took a swig from my bottle and turned to my laptop, in a flash...someone had lifted the bottle in pursuit of a young man.I heard screams of 'onye oshi' 'thief'...that's when I realized that the woman screaming had been robbed of her purse..The woman claimed she had only N200 and an umbrella in the purse. They pursued him, caught him and put a tire on his neck. They poured fuel on him and all I could do was beg the officers there to help him. They looked at me funny and struck the match. My journey to the nation's capital was no longer the adventure I hoped it would be, it was my worst nightmare. This isn't a movie... I'm talking about Jungle Justice in Nigeria. I think it's sickening and sad. We cannot lose our humanity. If a man does wrong, please seek the hands of the law. Taking the law into your hands is barbaric and that's not what we should be.What's your take on Jungle Justice? Let's talk!""

N’Delta Varsity Apppoints Shehu Of Borno Pro-chancellor

Governor Seriake joystickson of Bayelsa State has appointed the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Garbai Elkanemi, as the second Pro-Chancellor of the Niger Delta University owned by the state.

He has, therefore, called on Nigerian leaders to protect the cordial relationship between the North and South rather than fan the embers of hatred and acrimony.

The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Edmund Oguru, said this during a ceremony to formalise the appointment on Monday in Abuja. He said one of the reasons that guided the choice of the monarch from the old Borno Empire was to rebuild the existing cordial relationship between the North and the South-South.

He said, “The message we are sending to Nigerians by this action is that we should build bridges across the divide and stop creating walls over each other. What was uppermost in our minds was that the South-South has, over the years, been a great ally of the North.”

The governor said from the early days of Nigeria’s independence till today, the South-South had been the bridge between the North and the South, adding that it was in order to reenact that bridge-building that the state government decided to appoint the Shehu as the chancellor of the state university.

He said, “As we have said repeatedly, Bayelsa State occupies the south-most part of this country. We carry the weight of this country in terms of politics and in terms of the economy.

“You will recall that in 1959, in the very first election that was conducted in this country, the Northern People’s Congress did not secure the majority, the Niger Delta Congress won only one seat through the late Chief Melford Okilo. It took the coalition of the NPC and NDC to form the government of the day.

“Particularly in these times, instead of building bridges, ethnic nationalities, geopolitical zones, religious and political groups appear to be building walls that will separate everyone. We felt that we should reenact what we are used to doing, building bridges between the North and the South.

“We in Bayelsa State consider it a honour and privilege to have the revered Shehu of Borno accepting to serve as the chancellor of our state university.”

Oguru said among the factors that led to the choice of the emir as the second chancellor of the institution were his character and status, adding that the state recognised the fact that the Shehu is the second highest traditional institution in the northern part of the country.

“We also recognise the fact that he is somebody who rose from the ranks in the civil service and got to the peak. We needed to tap from his wealth of experience and extensive personality and institutions that he has links with,” he said.

While accepting the offer, Elkanemi expressed his delight at the appointment, describing it as a great honour.

He described the university as the institution of the future and gave the assurance that he and other officials of the institution were going to develop it to a world-class institution.

Cultists Kill Bowen Student For Rejecting intimate Advances

The life of a 17-year-old student of Bowen University, Opeyemi Odusanya, has been cut short by some cult members in Lagos.

It was gathered that the undergraduate was murdered for allegedly rejecting intimate advances from some youths in the area and also for “being too proud.”

Myschool learnt that the victim was a 300 level student of Biochemistry at the university.

Police authorities told our correspondent that Opeyemi was stabbed to death by the cultists at her parents’ house in the Alakuko area of Lagos on February 3, 2014.

Police sources told our correspodent that investigations had revealed that the culprits were residents of the area.

A police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “In the afternoon of February 3, 2014, the deceased went to buy airtime for her telephone. As she was returning, a group of cult members trailed and entered the house with her.

“Opeyemi was alone at home when the guys entered. They instructed her to turn on the generator so that if she screamed, no one would hear.

“We believe that they wanted to take advantage of the girl, but she must have put up a fierce struggle as the whole house was scattered.

“The guys subsequently stabbed her in the stomach several times and ripped out her intestines.

“After killing her, they took her phone and the keys to her parents’ vehicle, a jeep, which was on the table. They stole the jeep, which was parked in the compound, after killing the girl.”

The sources told our correspondent that after the guys had fled, they used Opeyemi’s telephone line to send a text message to her mother, explaining why they killed the 17-year-old.

The text message, which was typed in English and Yoruba languages, and made available to our correspondent, read, “Your child has been proud. We have been toasting her, but she has refused to accept. We have killed her to teach a lesson. We have also driven your car away.

“If you want your car back, come to Lakas Hotel or Cele Bus Stop around Mile 2 to pick it up. If we see policemen around, we will kill everybody.”

Residents of the area told our correspondent that the victim’s mother, Olayinka, had a panic attack after reading the message and quickly informed those that were with her.

However, a phone call from the family’s housemaid was said to have confirmed Olayinka’s fears that the text message was not a bluff.

It was learnt that she returned to the house to meet the lifeless body of her child.

Our correspondent gathered that the mother of the deceased, who is a senior official at the Mushin Local Government secretariat, later reported the incident at the Alakuko Police Division.

A police source told our correspondent that the murder weapon had been recovered.

“By all indications, the girl was not take advantage ofd because her clothes were intact. The knife used in killing her has been recovered,” the policeman said.

It was gathered that the parents of the girl had relocated to the Redemption Camp on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Our correspondent, who visited the Facebook page of the deceased, observed that tributes had been pouring in for the 300 level student.

One of her friends, Folake Kuforiji, wrote, “RIP Dear, May your soul rest in perfect peace and may the Almighty God protect and console the rest of your family. A real gem is gone. I remember back then in secondary school when we used to call you Ope International. You left us too soon, but God knows best.”

A man, Adeniji Chigozie, who claimed to be her former teacher, wrote, “Remember those days in class. You were one of the students I cherished and respected. You were respectful and intelligent. As a teacher, I was very proud of you. The details of the cause of your death are still sketchy and confusing. Nigeria has lost another intelligent and beautiful mind – A great star has fallen!

“Above all, I wish your family and loved ones the fortitude to bear this shocking loss – May God in His gracious nature comfort them, amen!”

When contacted on the telephone, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, said, “I have called the Divisional Police Officer at the Alakuko Police Division and he said he was not aware of the incident.”
