The Registrar, Veterinary Council of Nigeria, Dr Marcus Avong, has warned new veterinary graduates to shun unethical practices or risk sanctions.
Avong gave the warning at the 35th oath-taking ceremony of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, on Friday.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that 40 fresh graduates were inducted to the council.
He said what was given to fresh veterinary doctors were probation licences which would expire in 2015, adding that the council would not renew licences of those found wanting.
He said, “The probation licence given to you to practise will expire in 2015, if any of you is found wanting within this one year his or her licence will not be renewed.
“You are expected to obey the ethics of the profession as well as respect your senior colleagues in the profession.”
He commended parents of new veterinary doctors for investing in the education of their children during the six years course.
He said, “I commend parents who in spite of the economic challenges made this huge investment in education, today your dream has come true.”
The institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, in his remark, said he was optimistic that graduates found worthy in character and learning by the university would also excel in their profession.
Ozumba said, “I have no doubt that this university having found you worthy in character and learning by conferring DVM degree on you, expected you to be good ambassadors of the university.
“The oath you have taken today requires you to use your scientific knowledge and skills acquired for the benefit of the society.
“The university appreciates the contributions of VCN in training of our veterinary students.”
Earlier, Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. Vincent Shoyinka, urged the new graduates to be good veterinary doctors by adhering to the ethics of the profession.
Shoyinka, who congratulated them for their new status as members of VCN, said the faculty was grateful to the council, especially on the full accreditation of the faculty.
“I urge you to obey ethics of the profession so as to give the society the best as well as earn integrity for yourself,” Shoyinka said.
