Court remands three for killing man

An Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court has ordered that three men ─ Awalu Suraju, Ashiru Sanibaba and Abdullahi Saidu be remanded in the Ikoyi Prison for allegedly conspiring with some other suspects at large to kill one Sango Mohammed.

The Magistrate, F.J. Adefioye, ruled that they should be in custody pending the release of legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

Policemen from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, said the three suspects were among a mob that hacked 28-year-old Mohammed to death with machetes.

The incident happened at the Alaba Market area of Lagos State.

The police told the court that the suspects were not arrested with weapons and did not confess to the crime, adding that the prosecution would be relying on eyewitnesses.

The suspects were arraigned on two counts of murder, which read in part, “That you, Awalu Suraju, Ashiru Sanibaba, Abdullahi Saidu, and others at large, on May 28, 2014 at about 9am, at Alaba Market, Mile 12, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; murder.”

The offence is said to contravene sections 221 and 231 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
