Don’t crucify Eagles over defeat –Nwosu
FORMER Nigeria captain Henry Nwosu has said the Super Eagles’ defeat against France in their Brazil 2014 World Cup Round of 16 on Monday is not enough to condemn the team.
1998 world champions Les Bleus beat the Eagles 2-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Nwosu expressed his disappointment with the performances of Nigeria’s midfielders and the own goal from captain Joseph Yobo, but insisted the team had room for improvement.
“The Eagles had the opportunity to win the game but they didn’t take their chances. The coach (Stephen Keshi) should have seen early in the game that the French were playing fast dribbles but he didn’t counter it,” Nwosu told our correspondent on the telephone after the game.
“Another problem was that the defence exposed goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama on many occasions. The defenders should take the blame for this because they did that many times in the game.”
The 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner said the Eagles’ midfield gave too much room to the opponents, which resulted in Ogenyi Onazi’s injury.
He said, “Onazi’s injury effectively weakened the midfield; it gave France the confidence to operate better. It was unfortunate that the introduction of Reuben Gabriel couldn’t change anything.”
