FAAN to close Abuja airport runway

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has announced that the runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja will be closed for three days beginning from Saturday.

The Coordinating General Manager, Public Affairs, Aviation Parastatals, Mr. Yakubu Dati, said the closure would enable the agency to carry out maintenance on the runway.

Dati, in a terse statement on Wednesday, said, “The management of FAAN wishes to inform the public, especially aviation stakeholders and intending passengers, that the runway of the NAIA, Abuja will be closed to traffic for maintenance from Saturday, July 5, to Monday, July 7, 2014.

“A NOTAM (notice to all airmen) of the closure at 2300 UTC on Saturday, July 5, 2014 and reopening at 0500 UTC on Monday, July 7, 2014, has already been issued at the airport, notifying all airlines, sister agencies and critical stakeholders.”

According to him, when completed, the maintenance exercise will enhance safety and security at the airport.

He said, “This facility upgrade, which is in line with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) requirements and NCAA’s (Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority) approved safety standard and recommended practices, will further elevate safety and security to greater heights.

“FAAN hereby apologises for the inconveniences this temporary closure will cause air passengers and airline operators.”
