Tension in Plateau over LG boss inauguration

There is palpable tension in Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State following the inauguration of the newly-elected chairman in the disputed February 25 local government election by Governor Jonah Jang.

Jang had, on Thursday, inaugurated Mr. Nanmwa Kumzhi as chairman of the council, but the Democratic Peoples Party’s candidate, Mr. Dan Dil, had earlier claimed victory in the poll which was declared inconclusive by the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission.

PLASIEC had said that there would be a re-run election in Jat Ward in Langtang North on March 3 to determine the winner of the chairmanship seat.

However that rerun did not hold before the electoral body declared Kumzhi as the winner. However, youths in the area have vowed to fight what they described an illegal action by PLASIEC.

The youth, under the aegis of Tarok Concerned Youths, warned the electoral body not to provoke them by inaugurating an unpopular candidate.

They asked the electoral body to conduct a rerun in the Jat ward as it had earlier promised.

But the PLASIEC chairman said the PDP candidate was announced the winner of the local government election following a court judgement which stopped the planned rerun.
