MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program, as part of the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s new initiative, Education First, seeks to ensure all children have access to quality, relevant, and inclusive education. The U.N. recognized the Scholars Program as an innovative model for educating young people and encouraging citizenship.
As part of the Scholars Program, Wellesley will provide nine (9) African women with comprehensive support that includes scholarships, mentoring, counseling, and internship opportunities.
Scholars at Wellesley will build experiences, values, and competencies that are critical to success in the global economy, and that enable them to give back to their communities and home countries. The students will arrive in groups of three students each year beginning Fall 2013.

The program also includes a partnership with African Leadership Academy to develop an African-based careers network for scholars to access internships and jobs across the continent.
CRITERIA
Applicants must be talented, economically-disadvantaged students from developing countries – particularly from Africa; who are ready to learn and to make a difference in their communities, their countries, and their continent.
Wellesley will identify and select young students from economically disadvantaged communities who have demonstrated the following attributes: Academic Talent, Commitment to Giving Back AND Potential to Lead.
Women from all over the world come to Wellesley in pursuit of an outstanding university-level education.
HOW TO APPLY
applicants to Wellesley, who apply for financial aid and meet the criteria for The MasterCard Foundation Scholarship Program, will be considered for the Scholarship. You do not need to complete additional forms or take additional steps at this time.
Summarized below are the three “must have” items that admission staff need from all first-year applicants:
Take Standardized Tests and Submit Scores.
Wellesley requires that all first-year applicants take the SAT Reasoning plus two SAT Subject Tests, Or the ACT with Writing. Please request that the official score reports be sent to Wellesley. You may either list Wellesley on the test registration form or ask your guidance counselor for an additional Report Request Form.
Wellesley also strongly recommends that students for whom English is not their first language and who have been studying in English for less than five years take the TOEFL®. Please let the admission staff know the date you took or will take the exam. All exams must be completed by the stated application deadline for your decision plan.
Complete and Submit the Common Application
You must use the Common Application to apply to Wellesley College. Go to: www.commonapp.org. It’s free to apply to Wellesley through the Common App. Wellesley does not have an application fee, as we want everyone, regardless of ability to pay, to feel they can apply.
You may use the Common Application to apply to multiple schools. To do so, you will need to submit a separate application to each school individually. It’s easy to do. Please note that schools will refer to you by the name you list as your "preferred name" on the Common Application.
On the Common App, complete the following:
Write one personal essay - This essay is important, as it provides you with an excellent opportunity for reflection and for communicating to colleges what they should know about you.
Indicate your decision plan - Indicate your chosen decision plan for each school you apply to. Wellesley's decision plans include: Early Decision (binding): deadline November 1; *Early Evaluation (nonbinding): deadline January 1; Regular Decision: January 15.
*On the Common App, specify Regular Decision. You will then be asked if you want the Early Evaluation Option, whereby Wellesley will provide you with an early indication of your changes for admission.

About Your Essay
At Wellesley, typically three members of the Board of Admission read your application. Your goal should be to make members of the Board of Admission feel as though they’re sitting down at the table together to discuss your interests and aspirations.

DEADLINE
Applications usually start around September/November and closes around January/February.
