Ghana Friendly: Falconets Depart For Accra
Nigeria’s U-20 women national team, the Falconets, will depart Abuja Wednesday for Accra, Ghana for an international friendly match against the Black Princess.
The Falconets will play two matches on Friday 6 June and Sunday 8 June with Ghana as part of their preparation for the FIFA U-20 women’s World Cup slated for August in Canada.
Head coach, Peter Dedevbo says 22 players have been listed to play the two matches.
“I need to give all players the opportunity to show their skills and seek a place in the final list for Canada, especially the new players,” the coach said.
According to Dedevbo, the girls are physically and mentally fit to take on the Ghanaian side. He promised a better outing for Nigeria.
“These matches are not just friendly games, but they are opportunities to proof the superiority of the Falconets on the continent once again,” he said.
Team captain, Patience Okaeme disclosed that they are going to fight hard to win the two matches in Accra.
“We will not come back empty handed,” she boasted.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are expected to approach their international friendly game against Greece tonight in USA with caution for fear of injury.
The Eagles are playing Greece in Pennsylvania, United States 7p.m. local time and 12 midnight Nigeria as part of their preparations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. According to him, the players will have to play with extreme caution for fear of picking injuries from the match as any injury may affect such player’s fortune in Brazil.
“With the final list release, the focus of the Chief Coach will be on the players and the need to ensure that they play in unity, but I must tell you that the players will be very careful in this match for fear of injury. I’m very sure that the players will be mindful of picking injuries from the match because we are very much close to the World Cup,” he said.
Today’s meeting with Greece will be the fourth time the Super Eagles will engage the Greek national team at senior level.
Nigeria edged Greece 2-0 in 1994 at the Foxboro Stadium in the US in her maiden World Cup appearance. Goals from now assistant coach, Daniel Amokachi, and Finidi George gave Nigeria victory on the day.

World Cup: ‘All Eyes On You Now’
Former Super Eagles coach, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde has charged the 23 lucky players that made Nigeria’s final list to the 2014 FIFA World Cup to be good ambassadors of the country when hostilities begin in Brazil.
After hours of apprehension yesterday, Chief Coach Stephen Keshi finally made public the 23-man squad around 12 midnight Monday with seven of the players dropped. Speaking with P.M.NEWS Sports early today, Onigbinde who took Nigeria to the 2002 Japan/Korea World Cup said that to whom much is given, much is expected, adding that the 23 players that made the final list should count themselves lucky. He said that they should reciprocate the chance given to them by proving beyond reasonable doubt that they merit going to the World Cup.
“The 23 players should remember that they are now representing the whole Nigeria at the World Cup and by this all eyes are on them to perform and not disappoint us at the world championship. They are not the best, but the coach knows why he is taking them to the World Cup. My advice is that they should prove themselves now that they have been chosen,” said the FIFA/CAF Instructor.
Onigbinde posited that Coach Keshi must have drawn up his games plan for the World Cup, the most important reason he carefully selected the 23-man squad. On what to expect from Eagles in a group that consists of Argentina, Iran and Bosnia, Onigbinde said that football is not mathematics, adding that anything can happen. “I believe that with good preparation on the part of our team, anything can happen in the group. Nigeria should watch out. I can only wish Keshi and the team well,” he said.
Meanwhile, the seven dropped players, Daniel Akpeyi, Ejike Uzoenyi, Victor Obinna, Joel Obi, Nosa Igiebor, Sunday Mba and Nnamadi Oduamadi will leave the team camp and return to their respective bases on Thursday.

FG invests N1.6trn on 600 public enterprises – BPE
Benjamin Dikki, Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), said the Federal Government invested N1.6 trillion to create 600 public enterprises in Nigeria’s economy prior the introduction of privatisation.

Dana Plane Crash: Judge Disappoints Victims’ Families
Victims of the Dana Air disaster in Lagos seeking compensation were disappointed this morning when a Lagos High Court ruled that investigation into the 3 June, 2012 air crash was inconclusive and as such cannot apportion any blame.
The presiding magistrate, Mr Alexander Komolafe, however, gave a nine-point recommendation to prevent future occurrence.
In his ruling, Komolafe, who noted that the Accident and Investigation Bureau, AIB, did not conclude investigation into the crash to ascertain the actual cause, recommended the following in his judgement: establishment of a national body for logistic and supply handlers and retrievers to handle emergency; establishment of forensic science laboratories in each political zone in the country; enactment of national coroner act through an act of parliament; public sensitization programmes; and provision of fiire service station in every local government.
Other recommendations are: provision of equipment to all emergency agents; distribution of radio units to all the emergency agents; establishment of national and state cooperation for emergency and the establishment of inter-state agency for cooperation for emergency.
Meanwhile, exactly two years after a Dana Air plane crashed in Lagos, western Nigeria, killing over 160 people, many relatives are yet to be compensated even as the airline acquires more planes and flies more passengers, P.M.NEWS can reveal.
Dana Flight 992 crashed on 3 June 2012 in Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos only minutes to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport that Sunday afternoon.
The crash, one of the worst in the Nigerian aviation history, triggered outrage and grief, and calls for the government to reform the sector and pay more attention to safety.
But two years on, relatives claim that as many as one-third of them are yet to fully be compensated while others have not even received any compensation.
Sam Ogbogoro, Dana Head of Corporate Communications, claimed that virtually everyone has been compensated but did not know how many.
He told our correspondent on the phone that he would need to contact the insurance company.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, says relatives are entitled to $100,000 for every lost person.
Parents, children, friends, widows and widowers of the departed were expected to throng the crash site to pay respects and remember their beloved ones.
They would lay wreaths and console one another.

Clark Asks FG To Revoke Tompolo, Dokubo’s Contracts
A prominent Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark on Tuesday asked the Federal Government to revoke the multi-billion naira pipeline and maritime protection contracts awarded to two former leaders of the Niger Delta militants, Government Ekpemukpolo (Tompolo) and Asari Dokubo.
The Ijaw leader, who said this while contributing to a debate on the report of the National Conference Committee on Public Finance and Revenue, said government should revoke the contracts because it has not contributed to reducing oil theft as desired by government.
“I want to advise the government to withdraw the contracts awarded to Tomplolo and Asari Dokubo because they have failed to stop oil thefts in the country. Instead, youths from areas where oil facilities are located should be given the job,” said Clark.
The Octogenarian said the militants were sabotaging the efforts of government to stop oil theft because they want to retain their pipeline contracts.
While noting that oil theft has increased since the pipeline protection and maritime contracts were awarded to the two former Niger Delta warlords, Clark noted that youths of the community where there are oil assets will do better job of protecting them.
“If we allow youths from host communities to protect oil installations, it will be difficult for anybody to break the pipeline and steal our oil,” Clark added.
Other delegates who contributed to the report condemned the lack of transparency in the management of Nigeria’s oil revenue by the Federal Government and the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.
Delegates were sharply divided over the recommendation of the Committee that the Federal Government should stop subsidising petrol yesterday.
In his own contribution to the debate, Professor Femi Mimiko, a delegate from Ondo State, asked the Federal Government to remove fuel subsidy.
He added that savings made from the stoppage of fuel subsidy can be deployed for other uses that will be more beneficial to the poor.
“On this, I find it difficult to understand the argument of those who want subsidy to be sustained. It is evident that fuel subsidy in this country is a huge infrastructure of corruption.
“I then wonder why those who in one breadth decry corruption would at another, defend or argue for the retention of a clear infrastructure of corruption.
“As things are now, it is evident that the fuel subsidy regime has failed. It does not favour the poor; constraints development of our oil refining capacity; and promotes corruption. It should be removed and the savings put on the proposed social security regime that one of the Committees has recommended,” said Mimiko.
“Such can also be deployed to support free education at both primary and secondary levels; and a scholarship fund for students of tertiary educational institutions who cannot afford to pay their way through school, Mimiko, Ondo Delegate and Vice Chancellor of Ondo State University, Akingba-Akoko said of the uses which the funds currently being used to pay subsidy on petroleum products can be deployed to.

APC National Convention: Party constitutes zoning committee
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has constituted a sub-committee out of its National Convention Committee to work out an arrangement to zone the party’s national offices ahead of its forthcoming national convention.
Senator Joseph Waku, a member of the convention committee, disclosed this to journalists on Tuesday shortly after the committee’s close-door meeting at the Sokoto State Government Lodge in Abuja.
Waku said the committee would continue to fine-tune modalities on how to zone the party’s national offices and ensure there is no rancour in the party.
Waku, however, declined to name the membership of the sub-committee.
He said that the committee also constituted sub-committees to deal with different responsibilities toward ensuring a successful national convention of the party.
“We have just constituted some sub-committees for our convention, especially those that will zone the national offices.
“We will converge today (Tuesday) to fine-tune on how these sub-committees will work, especially when to submit their reports to the National Convention Committee.
“Membership of some committees were not complete at the meeting; so we will continue with our meeting today to address some of the issues that are still pending.”
It would be recalled that the APC had inaugurated a 15-member committee ahead of its national convention scheduled for June 13 and 14 in Abuja.

He said Osoba is a father and leader of the party both at the national and state levels and appealed to him not to destroy the house he jointly built with other members of the party. Alhaji Dawodu further said, if any political office holder did not perform well in his senatorial district or constituency, such a politician should not be given ticket for a second term, adding that Chief Olusegun Osoba should be able to manage the crisis.
Meanwhile, Sango residents and Chief Imam of Sango Central Mosque, Alhaji Tajudeen Babalola Shafy have unanimously declared that Governor Amosun deserves a second term in office.
They described him as the best governor Ogun State has ever had since the creation of the state.
The residents and Chief Imam said during a chat with our reporter that Amosun has brought rapid development to all the Senatorial districts of the state and as such deserves to contnue in office in 2015.

World Cup: Military Warns Football Fans
Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, has advised fans and owners of viewing centres to be vigilant during World Cup football tournament.
Olukolade gave the advice at a Joint Security News Conference organised by the National Information Centre, Abuja on Monday. Recalling the explosion at a bar in Mubi, Adamawa, on Sunday, Olukolade urged the fans and citizens to always take notice of strange persons or objects around them.
He also advised them to report strange objects to security agencies for prompt action to forestall untoward incidents.
Olukolade said a key suspect in the explosion which rocked the bar, had been arrested.
He confirmed that 18 people died while 19 sustained injuries during the explosion.
He said military operations were being intensified in the North East and other areas where there were crises.
Olukolade said troops in crisis areas of Benue killed five terrorists, recovered rifles and two vehicles when they engaged troops during routine patrols.
According to him, security agencies are working round the clock and sharing information with their foreign partners in the effort to rescue the kidnapped school girls.
He, however, appealed to the media and citizens to be moderate in their speculations and conclusions on efforts to rescue the girls.

Out of the 500 commuter bus drivers screened by the Lagos State Government at two motor parks in the state, 324 of the drivers tested positive to hard drugs, high alcoholic intake and bad eyesight.
The drivers were tested recently at the T&M CMS and CMS-Epe Motor Parks at Marina, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.
They were screened for high blood pressure, diabetes, eye disease, blood alcohol content (BAC) and narcotics during a five-day screening, awareness and sensitization campaign organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Health.
According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, 176 people were screened for hypertension and diabetes, 351 drivers had their eyes screened, 120 people underwent urine test, 80 drivers were screened for alcohol content level using breathalyzer and 83 people underwent one-on-one mental health counselling.
He explained that out of the 500 motor drivers that were screened during the latest exercise, 50 of those screened suffered from hypertension, 16 people were found to be diabetic, 100 drivers tested positive to hard drugs while 26 others had excessive blood alcohol level.
Of the 351 drivers screened for blindness, 198 of them had eye defect and had been driving with poor eyesight, thus endagering the lives of passengers.
Out of this figure, Idris said 117 were given free eye glasses, 42 people were penciled down for special order lenses while 39 were referred for specialized eye care.
He said the screening, under the Motor Park Health and Safety Initiatives programme was instituted in order to ensure the safety of drivers and commuters by creating awareness about the need for drivers to update their driving skills and techniques, submitting themselves for periodic medical examination, especially eye tests on one hand and other non-communicable diseases like hypertension and diabetes on the other hand and dissuading them from substance abuse like alcohol and drugs.
The commissioner added that the state government decided to embark on the Motor Park Health and Safety Initiatives programme because human developmental index had shown that the numbers of lives that were lost in a year were not necessarily lost to natural illnesses alone but to violence, road accidents, and other needless and avoidable cause of death.
“This explains why the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation and in partnership with Guinness Nigeria Plc put together this initiative. Again, that is why the importance of this motor park health and safety awareness campaign cannot be over emphasized,” Idris opined.
He explained that the Motor Park Health and Safety Initiative sensitization and screening campaign had been taken to Ojota, Iyana Ipaja, Oyingbo and Bariga motor parks, stressing that advocacy, education and enlightenment on what commercial motor drivers should do and should not do as regards their health and well being, especially to ensure an accident free commuting is what the programme seeks to achieve.
“The screening, counselling and advocacy team that run this programme include medical doctors, psychiatrists, nurses, laboratory technicians, pharmacists and pharmaceutical technicians, officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Vehicle Inspection Officers, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) officials and administrative workers,” the Commissioner said.
He urged commercial motor drivers to desist from taking alcohol, drugs or other related substance before going behind the wheel, stressing that evidence abound that road traffic accidents are influenced and precipitated by substance abuse which impairs driver’s ability to manage and manipulate a vehicle well.
“Let us resolve today that we will stop taking a gamble with our lives. Every time you cross the highway, every time you drink paraga (illicit gin), every time you get behind the steering wheels with drugs in your system, it is like putting a loaded gun to one’s head and wondering if it can kill or not. It is a huge risk to take and we should stop taking that risk,” he appealed.

Porn Movie Palaver Crashes 15 Year-Old Marriage
The 15 year-old marriage between a couple, Obiora Onwutalu and his enstranged wife Ogonna, was on Monday dissolved by the Lagos State Customary Court over the allegation that her husband watches pornographic movies with their children.
The 50 year-old Onwutalu, was reprimanded in court after he was accused by his wife, Ogonna, of watching pornographic films with their three children, including their 14-year old daughter.
Ogonna had asked the Ejigbo Customary Court to dissolve their marriage because her husband was a bad influence on their daughter and two sons, aged 13 and 9 years old respectively.
Testifying before the court, Ogonna said she was shocked to hear from their children about the pornographic film they watched, which was bought by her husband.
Ogonna said she destroyed the film but her husband bought another one without considering the adverse effect it would have on the children.
Ogonna told the court that Obiorah’s attitude made her to stop loving him and that she has lost interest in their marriage.
She also alleged that Obiorah had attempted to poison their children by forcing them to eat spoiled food and to use soap to brush their teeth.
She said when the incidents happened, she reported to the police at Ejigbo division but the matter was settled out of court.
She also alleged that her husband did not take good care of her and the children.
Ogonna told the court that though Obiorah properly married her by paying her bride price according to their tradition in their Oba town in Anambra State and brought her to Lagos, he did not relate well with her family, especially her mother before she died.
Obiorah denied all the allegations levelled against him by his wife.
He told the court that his estranged wife knew about the pornographic film because they agreed to buy it when they had just got married in 1999.
He further claimed that they usually watched the film together.
Obiorah denied encouraging the children to watch the film, insisting that he did not know that the children were watching the film until his wife raised the issue.
He also told the court that his wife lied that he did not take care of her family and attempted to poison the children.
He said his wife started misbehaving because he was facing challenges in his business.
Obiorah told the court he is ready to reconcile with his wife.
After the parties concluded their testimonies in court, the president of the court, Mr B.A. Akano adjourned the marriage for judgement.
When the matter came up on Monday, the court noted that the relationship have broken down irretrievably and dissolved the marriage.

Reacting through his Twitter handle, @BankyW, he said it is unfortunate people still fall victims of the impostors despite alerting people to the devices of the scammers.
“We are doing the best we can but there are now so many cases that we can’t keep up with everyone. So pls be smart. I have tweeted, done press releases, had some ppl arrested… but the problem never goes away. We just caught one that said a girl should pay N50k for a form and sleep with 1 guy and she wld get a N15 million samsung deal. RUBBISH,” the Mr. Capable crooner wrote on his timeline.
The Chief Executive Officer of Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E.) record label advised his fans not to be fooled.
“He that has ears, let him hear. Don’t be fooled by these fraudsters. Don’t pay money to anyone promising u a deal with EME or anyone else. Pls note that for any EME Business, if it doesn’t come from bookings@empirematesentertainment.com it is fake,” Banky W counselled.
A fan with the name Boluwatife, @olonsho455, said he paid N170,000, to Banky W’s manager last week Thursday, but Banky W tweeted back that,”U just paid a 419 guy.”
The singer who has an educational foundation,’I AM CAPABLE’ scholarship fund, prays that God rewards the people impersonating him and stealing money from upcoming artistes.
“May God reward all these 419 boys that keep impersonating me and my staff, stealing money from upcoming artists,” he said.
Banky cautioned that if a label wants to sign a new act, the label will pay to take care of the artiste, so upcoming artists should wise up.
“This goes for models too…anyone pretending to be an agent that tells u to pay money to get a modelling deal is lying.”

JAMB CBT Candidates with ''no result yet'' Issue, Read this!!!
A JAMB official in Lagos Mrs. Ebere Okeke following the conclusion of the computer based test examination conducted by JAMB has said all issues of pending results or ‘no result yet’ will soon be resolved except where the fault is from the candidates themselves.
According to her, the problem these candidates have accessing their results may be due to delay in processing of the results or network problem. She advised the CBT candidates with such issues to keep checking the internet for their results.
It could also be due to individual carelessness or negligence as some candidates did not carefully fill in their numbers correctly during registration; in such case the computer cannot deliver the result after the examination,she said.

Registrar of the Federal Polytechnic Idah, Kidnapped
Report has it that some gunmen over the weekend attacked the home of the
Registrar of the Federal Polytechnic, Idah Kogi state and took the
Registrar away to an unknown destination.
It was gathered that the kidnappers have not made any contact with the family of the Registrar as at the time of filling this report.

UNIZIK VC Appointment : Nwakoby Laments Foul Play
Following the controversy that ensued with the selection of Greg Nwakoby as the Vice Chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University which consequently led to the annulment of his appointment and the appointment of Prof Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku, Deputy VC (Academics), there has been accusations and counter-accusations.
A petition before the Senate by Prof. Greg Nwakoby of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK) has revealed how his refusal to bribe the screening panel N60 million cost him the chance to become the Vice Chancellor of the university despite being the most qualified.
Excerpt of the petition reads, “On May 24 2014, I was invited by Senator Fidelis Okoro and Alhaji Bala Buhari at Finotel Hotel, Awka, because I also lodged in the same hotel. On entering the hotel room of Senator Fidelis Okoro, they made a demand N30 million respectively (i.e. N30 million for each of them totaling N60 million) from me as a condition for returning me as the Vice Chancellor. Senator Fidelis Okoro claimed that he would use part of his own share to settle Barrister J.M. Aseh, whereas Alhaji Bala Buhari would settle the chairman of the Governing Council.”
“I refused their demand and insisted that as I came first in the interview and screening I could not do such a thing. They told me that Prof. Joseph Ahaneku had made the offer to them but that as I was the best that it was easier to support me. I still refused their offer."
"On May 26 2014, the council chairman reconvened the meeting of the Council which started by about 1 pm. Before the meeting, Senator Fidelis Okoro told me that Senator Pius Anyim, the Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF) had directed that Prof. Joseph Ahaneku should be appointed the Vice Chancellor and that Anyim had also appointed one Senator Ben Collin Ndu to replace Chief John Nwodo so as to ensure his bid succeed.”
The management however,has faulted the selection process that saw the emergence of Prof. Greg Nwakoby as he was said to be unqualified for the position.
Meanwhile, the Unizik Director of Information Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu has denied the radio announcement that mentioned Prof. Greg Nwakoby as the new VC.
He stated that Prof Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku,is the new VC of the institution and that his appointment will take effect from 3 June, 2014.
A petition before the Senate by Prof. Greg Nwakoby of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK) has revealed how his refusal to bribe the screening panel N60 million cost him the chance to become the Vice Chancellor of the university despite being the most qualified.
Excerpt of the petition reads, “On May 24 2014, I was invited by Senator Fidelis Okoro and Alhaji Bala Buhari at Finotel Hotel, Awka, because I also lodged in the same hotel. On entering the hotel room of Senator Fidelis Okoro, they made a demand N30 million respectively (i.e. N30 million for each of them totaling N60 million) from me as a condition for returning me as the Vice Chancellor. Senator Fidelis Okoro claimed that he would use part of his own share to settle Barrister J.M. Aseh, whereas Alhaji Bala Buhari would settle the chairman of the Governing Council.”
“I refused their demand and insisted that as I came first in the interview and screening I could not do such a thing. They told me that Prof. Joseph Ahaneku had made the offer to them but that as I was the best that it was easier to support me. I still refused their offer."
"On May 26 2014, the council chairman reconvened the meeting of the Council which started by about 1 pm. Before the meeting, Senator Fidelis Okoro told me that Senator Pius Anyim, the Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF) had directed that Prof. Joseph Ahaneku should be appointed the Vice Chancellor and that Anyim had also appointed one Senator Ben Collin Ndu to replace Chief John Nwodo so as to ensure his bid succeed.”
The management however,has faulted the selection process that saw the emergence of Prof. Greg Nwakoby as he was said to be unqualified for the position.
Meanwhile, the Unizik Director of Information Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu has denied the radio announcement that mentioned Prof. Greg Nwakoby as the new VC.
He stated that Prof Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku,is the new VC of the institution and that his appointment will take effect from 3 June, 2014.
JAMB Receives Commendation for Conducting a Successful CBT Examination

Nigerian Customs needs to be flexible, transparent – Spain
The Spanish Government on Saturday told the Nigerian Customs Service to adopt a more flexible and transparent approach when clearing Spanish goods at Nigerian ports.
Pablo Segrelles, Chief Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Spanish Embassy in Nigeria, made the call in an interview NAN in Lagos.
He lamented that Spanish goods were being unduly delayed at Nigerian ports.
The envoy noted that the delays had always resulted in payment of high demurrage for Spanish goods coming into Nigeria.
“The Nigerian Customs should urgently begin to adopt flexibility and transparency in the clearing of Spanish products coming into Nigeria through the ports.
“Spanish exporters to Nigeria are complaining of delays in the clearing of their products at the ports by the customs.
“We, therefore, think that the Nigerian Customs and other relevant government agencies should do something urgent about this problem.
“A lot of Spanish companies exporting their products to Nigeria are by the day getting discouraged with the present clearing system,” he said.
Segrelles said that the situation was gradually making Spanish exporters to begin to shift exporting expenses to their Nigerian importers.
The envoy said that the delay in the clearing process would continue to have negative impact on Nigerian importers if something urgent was not done.
He noted that the situation had forced some Nigerian importers to look elsewhere for means of livelihood.
He said that many Spanish investors and companies were interested in doing business in Nigeria but were being discouraged with the problem of implementation of Nigerian government’s policies at the ports.

Dangote to partner North East in agriculture
The President of the Dangote Group of Companies, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has pledged to partner with state governments in the North East to develop the area.
Speaking with journalists during a condolence visit to the palace of the late Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Shehu Abubakar, the business mogul said he would invest in agriculture to ensure the development of the geo-political zone.
Dangote said he had spoken with the late emir about six months ago when they discussed the potentials of investments in the state.
He said he had promised the emir that he would come to the state to concretise the discussion but that he could not do so before he died.
He, however, assured the government and people of the state that he would redeem his promise to invest in the state.
“We will still come. We have to make sure that we empower our people mainly in the northern part of Nigeria where the need is there.
“We will definitely look at the best way to help and mobilise our people to at least get a daily income,” he said.
The billionaire said the easiest way to assist the people in the North East zone was by helping the farmers to access credits to boost agricultural production.
“Even when you have the farm, you have the will to go into farming, unless you are helped financially, there is nothing you can do about it.

New breast cancer recurrence drug shows promise
A new treatment option is more effective than tamoxifen at preventing a return of breast cancer in young women, according to the results of two international trials released Sunday.
The findings show that exemestane, given along with treatment to suppress the function of the ovaries, reduced the risk of breast cancer’s return by 34 per cent, and cut the risk of a subsequent invasive cancer by 28 per cent.
Exemestane is an aromatase inhibitor that until now has largely been used in older women who have reached menopause, since it requires women to have a low level of estrogen in order to work.
Tamoxifen, meanwhile, is commonly prescribed to women who have had breast cancer as a way to prevent its return.
“For years, tamoxifen has been the standard hormone therapy for preventing breast cancer recurrence in young women with hormone sensitive disease,” said lead study author Olivia Pagani, clinical director of the breast unit at the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland.
“Our findings indicate that exemestane is better than tamoxifen, when given with ovarian function suppression, but longer follow up of these young women will be important to assess survival, and any long-term side effects and fertility.”
The results presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference were the joint analysis of two trials, including a total of 4,690 women, average age 43, who were randomized to receive either tamoxifen plus ovarian suppression therapy or exemestane plus ovarian suppression therapy.
The cancer-free survival in the exemestane group was 91.1 percent, compared to 87.3 percent in the tamoxifen group.
“Tamoxifen has been a gold standard for decades and has significant benefits,” said ASCO president Clifford Hudis.
“Now, with ovarian suppression, aromatase inhibitors are an option offering further reduction in the risk of recurrence.”

Osun PDP picks ex-speaker as Omisore’s running mate
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun on Sunday picked a former Speaker of Osun House of Assembly, Honourable Adejare Bello, as its deputy governorship candidate.
This was announced in a statement in Osogbo issued by the state PDP Chairman, Alhaji Gani OlaOluwa.
He said the decision was reached after wide consultations with stakeholders in the state.
“The elders caucus of the party, after two days of serious deliberations, brainstorming and wide consultations finally agreed that Adejare Bello should be the running mate of Senator Iyiola Omisore.
“The party has absolute confidence and belief that the combination of the duo will win the August 9 gubernatorial election,” the statement said.
OlaOluwa, in the statement, said that the posts of the governor and the deputy governor were not meant for “political impostors”.
He said that the gubernatorial campaign of the PDP would be officially flagged off on 9 June.

Obasanjo laments high rate of blindness
President Olusegun Obasanjo has decried the high level of blindness across the world, saying this should not be so.
He stated this while addressing beneficiaries of the free eye test and surgery conducted at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) complex in Abeokuta, Saturday.
The OOPL Chief Promoter said he would continue to assist the less-privileged people with eye problem. “I was once a victim. I had to be operated on to be able to see with my eyes again. So I understand how you feel.
“I am surprised that we are still having cases of blindness in this age.This should have been 50 years behind us. If it is happening 50 years ago, we can understand, but not at this age and time.
It is not in Nigeria alone that change is desired, it is a global change that we need to seek so that the issue of blindness would be resolved once and for all,” Obasanjo posited.
Obasanjo who visited the in-patient section, where over 1,000 had been registered for either eye-test, treatment or free surgery, commended the team of ophthalmologists carrying out the exercise.
“You have to thank them. They are ready to attend to you. Just be patient and follow their instructions, those of you with serious cases, would have been treated and you will walk home unaided,” he said.
The wife of the former President, Bola, who was also at the centre was full of appreciation for the medical team. “As they have come at their own free-will to conduct this exercise, we are really impressed by their dedication and commitment to attend to this crowd since Thursday,” she said.
Mrs. Obasanjo also commended her husband for the passion and love to serve humanity, saying, “this goes beyond politics and religion. People are coming from all the nooks and crannies of the town to benefit from this free surgery,” she admitted.
Project Co-ordinator, Dr. Olalekan Makinde, disclosed that at least 1,000 people registered for the exercise.
“Yet, more people are still coming,” he added, and observed that more young people are suffering from eye problems.
Makinde hinted that the OOPL Free-eye surgery project has been conducted in some states of the federation, including neighbouring Republic of Benin.
He said some of the cases of blindness, like cataract are preventable, “yet, several people are ignorant of this”.
The second phase of the exercise, he said, would come to an end on Tuesday, with at least 2,500 people benefitting from the free test, treatment and surgery.

Lai Mohammed Commends Amosun
Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, southwest Nigeria has been commended for his laudable and people-oriented projects across the three senatorial districts of the state.
The commendation was made by the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed when he paid a courtesy visit to the governor at the weekend.
He described the government as focused and determined to develop the state after inspecting various infrastructure and development project sites in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The APC spokesman submitted that the projects were massive, rapid and had impacted positively on the populace.
“Having gone round the state to check on some projects, I saw about three housing estates, 15km expanse of land to be developed. The new city project that is planned here is what we have in Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai, I see a very focused government and I am very impressed. I have also been assured that all these projects would be ready for commissioning in June.”
Giving suggestion on how to curb insurgency in the northeastern part of the country, Mohammed said: “the APC has always supported dialogue. Government should not only use military tactics in solving the problem, but also explore political, economic and social options.”
He called on the federal government to adopt a well thought out amnesty programme to train the militants, make them employable and engaged gainfully when they lay down their weapons, just as it was done for Niger Delta militants.
Reacting to the chances of his party in the governorship election in Ekiti State, he said: “If the election is going to be based on performance, then the party certainly has no contest. Governor Kayode Fayemi has done a lot for the state and the people,” he stated.

APC wins Yobe bye-election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared Alhaji Saidu Baba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the bye-election into the Yobe House of Assembly.
NAN reports that INEC had on Saturday conducted a bye-election to fill the vacant Nangere constituency seat, following the death of Adamu Degubi.
Degubi was killed by unknown gunmen in June 2012.
The INEC Returning Officer for the election, Malam Idris Yusuf, announced that Baba polled 14,360 votes to beat Shuaibu Ibrahim of the PDP who scored 7,851 votes.
The returning officer said 23,320 votes were cast, out of which 1,089 votes were invalidated.

We need to protect our traditional institutions – Atiku
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Sunday called for the protection of the traditional institution in the country.
Speaking with journalists in Gombe, Abubakar said that traditional institutions were the basis of the society.
He said the recent attack of the Emir of Gwoza by insurgents, which led to his death, was very shocking, adding that the government should be able to protect the traditional institution.
The former vice president, who was at the palace of the emir Gombe, condoled with the state government over the death of Alhaji Shehu Abubakar, the 10th Emir of Gombe.
He described the deceased as a level headed person who related with the ordinary people.
He prayed the Almighty God to grand him eternal rest.
Also at the palace for condolences was Chris Garuba, a former military administrator of the old Bauchi State.
Garuba described the deceased as humble, committed and dedicated to his duty.
He prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased and also for God to give the family and government the fortitude to bear the loss.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the late emir was turbaned the 10th Emir of Gombe during the administration of Garuba in 1984.
