For Precious Okolocha-Chibuzor, and Chira Egbunike, both graduating pupils of Atlantic Hall, Poka-Epe, Lagos, progress is not a distance. They were two of the 61 awardees at the school’s 23rd annual speech day and prize-giving ceremony last Saturday.
While 59 others received prizes in Poetry, Mathematics, Economics and other subjects, Okolocha-Chibuzor and Egbunike’s got special awards showing they made the most astounding progress in the school.
Speaking with our correspondent, 16-year-old Okolocha-Chibuzor said, “I never expected the award. Many people in my class think they are smarter than me. Though I have spent five years in the school, this is my first award. I stopped all distractions and focused on my studies. I focused on what I came to school for.’’
The teenager, who dreams of becoming a pharmacist, added. “I improved in almost all my subjects. I was proud of myself. I knew my family members were also proud of me. My ambition now is to have one of the best results in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education and the WAEC. If you think you cannot do anything, you are wrong. Through God, everything is possible.”
Egbunike’s story from grass to grace was also inspiring. As a first year pupil, the youngster used to occupy the 78th position in his class. But somehow Egbunike desired a change and so he did the unusual.
He said, “I was usually in the 78th position in my class. But I have done so well now that I am now in the 41st position. My strategy was to read ahead of the class. I would ask our teacher for the next topic and would read ahead. I intend to work harder to do better than this.”
According to the Head of Corporate Development, African Capital Alliance Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Uwa Osa-Oboh, who was the guest lecturer, there is no sidelining hard work in accomplishing excellence, which she describes as rigorous.
Osa-Oboh, urged the pupils to see excellence as a disposition and not an event.
