Katsina trains 5,000 youths in vocational skills

No fewer than 5,000 youths have benefited from training in vocational skills under the Katsina State Department of Science and Technology in the last three years.

Alhaji Suleiman Kuki, the Special Adviser to Governor Ibrahim Shema on Science and Technology, disclosed this on Monday in Katsina while briefing newsmen on the activities of the department.

Kuki said that the government provided allowances and offered free feeding to the trainees in order to boost their morale.
He said the beneficiaries were trained in skills such as mobile phone repairs, tie and dye, leather work, film and photography, auto mechanic, auto electrical and computer repairs.

Others are catering services, pottery, blacksmithing, tailoring, carpentry and joinery.

Kuki said that the government also gave the trainees working tools and funds to enable them set up businesses and become self-reliant.

Many of the beneficiaries had since become employers of labour, the special adviser said, adding that the training had helped in checking youth restiveness and improved wealth generation among the beneficiaries.

He said the state government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Government to establish a technology incubation centre in the state.

The centre, he said, would promote commerce and gainful employment among youths.
