The police have arraigned a suspected serial killer, Adigun Oriyomi, 29, for the murder of a woman, Muninat Agbabiaka, her four-month-old daughter, Aishat, and a 26-year-old woman, Wakilatu Adeboye.

Oriyomi and five other suspected members of the Black Axe Confraternity- Toba Ajiboye (37), Yusuf Akinwale (28), Muyideen Gafaru (31), Sherif Kosoko (38) and Yakubu Olayiwola (40), were arraigned on three separate murder charges before a Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court.

PUNCH Metro had reported that Oriyomi had been arrested by the police and arraigned for murder, but that he came out under controversial circumstances.

In October 1, 2013, our correspondent had reported that the Kogi State indigene was arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court for allegedly killing four people in the Mushin area of the state.

Our correspondent reported that he was remanded in prison, while the case was adjourned for legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

The DPP, having concluded that there were sufficient evidences to link him with the murders, ordered that he be tried at the High Court.

However, he was said to have obtained bail and evaded arrest.

On January 29, 2014, PUNCH Metro reported that some gunmen stormed Amodu Street, Mushin and killed a pregnant woman, Musili Bello, her 12-year-old daughter, Suliat, and a motorcycle rider, Baba Monday.

Our correspondent reported that the police declared Oriyomi wanted after the incident.

On February 10, the police said the suspect also led a gang to Ewenla Street, Mushin and killed another woman, 38-year-old Agbabiaka, her 4-month-old baby, Aishat, and another woman, Adeboye.

In March 18, PUNCH Metro reported that Oriyomi allegedly killed Adekeye, his friend, in the presence of his three-year-old daughter.

In April, the police said the suspect again led a suspected team of cultists to Akala Street, Mushin, and killed one Azeez, aged 26 years, by shooting him with a gun and later hacking him to death.

The police, in an intensified search for the suspect, were later able to apprehend him.

He was arraigned with the other five suspects on charges of murder.

A team of Investigating Police Officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, told the court the suspects confessed to the crime, while witnesses would testify in court.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Nwangwu Peter, said the offences were punishable under sections 221, 231, 409, Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.

The defendants’ pleas were not taken for the charges.

Peter asked the court to remand all the defendants as the police await legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

He said, “We asked for the remand of the defendants in prison pursuant to Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”

He added that the legal advice for one of the cases had been out and Oriyomi was supposed to be standing trial at the High Court, but the police could not tell how he got out.

The Chief Magistrate, Ipaye Nwachukwu, ordered that they be kept in prison custody pending the DPP legal advice.
