Police arraign three for stealing goods

A three-man gang has been arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on three counts bordering on theft.

The men, Umaru Dula, 29; Abdulazeez Juma, 22; and Musa Alhado, 27, were accused of breaking into a packing store on Gbajumo Street, Balogun, Lagos Island, belonging to one Christopher Kanu, and making away with 26 cartons of children shoes worth N1.3m.

The police said the offence contravenes sections 409, 285 and 306 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The charges read in part, “That you, Umaru Dula, Abdulazeez Juma, and Musa Alhado, on the June 14, 2014 at about 1940hrs at Gbajumo Street, Balogun, Lagos Island, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal 26 cartons of children shoes valued N1.3m, property of one Christopher Kanum and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 285 Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.”

The three defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Ms A. O. Awogboro, admitted the accused persons to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The matter was adjourned till the 16th of July 2014.

In another development, a 44-year-old man, Salau Ajani, has been arraigned for theft and issuance of a dud cheque.

Police say that the accused person obtained N5m under false pretense from a Diamond bank branch on 71 Enu-Owa Street, Lagos Island. He was also accused of issuing a cheque of N450, 000, knowing fully well that he had insufficient funds in the account, contravening sections 313 and 319 (b) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

The charges read in part, “That you, Moruf Salau Ajani, sometimes in the month of April 2010 at Diamond bank on Enu-Owa Street, Lagoas Island, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did obtain N5m under false pretences and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 313 of the criminal laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was granted bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two surties in like sum, while the case was adjourned till July 14, 2014.
