US commends conduct of Ekiti election

The United States on Monday congratulated the Independent National Electoral Commission and other stakeholders in the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti State, which it adjudged credible.

A statement by the Public Affairs Section of the United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria noted that the outcome of the Ekiti election reflected the will of the people.

“We congratulate the many electoral stakeholders for the successful conduct of the June 21 Ekiti gubernatorial election. The Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission oversaw a credible, efficient process, and by all accounts the result reflected the will of Ekiti’s voters.

“The security forces collaborated effectively and provided a safe and secure environment free of major incidents. The parties and their supporters acted responsibly during and after the election, and the magnanimity exhibited by all candidates afterwards speaks highly of them and the people of Ekiti,” the statement read in parts.

The US said it was commendable that more than 50 per cent of registered voters turned out to make their voices heard.

It added that the progress recorded in the Ekiti election would augur well for the future of Nigeria’s democracy.
