The police on Thursday arraigned a 30-year-old man, Animashaun Waheed, before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court, Tinubu, Lagos Island, for attempting to break into an ATM belonging to Access Bank.
The incident, it was gathered, happened on Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at Wole Olateru Street, Lekki Phase 1, in the Eti – Osa Local Government Area of Lagos.
Wahed was arraigned on three counts.
The charges read in part, “That you Animashaun Waheed on September 9, 2014, at about 2.30am at Wole Olateru Street, Lekki Phase 1, in Eti – Osa LGA, within Lagos Magisterial district, did enter into the Avalon House premises with intent to commit felony, and that you did attempt to rob the Access Bank ATM by making effort to break into the ATM centre with an axe.”
Police said the offences were contrary to and punishable under sections 306(2), 296(3) and 310 of the criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Corporal Francisca Okere, told the court that the defendant was arrested by a police patrol team in the middle of the night.
She recounted that the defendant had unlawfully gained entry into the bank’s premises, armed with an axe.
She said, “One of the security guards on duty, Tijani Ahmed, at about 2.30am, was alerted by the noise from the activities of Waheed, who had already gained access into the premises and was attempting to break into the ATM.
“Ahmed alerted his colleague, Halilu Musa. They both raised the alarm that attracted other security guards in the neighbourhood.
“Waheed was subsequently arrested and handed over to the police patrol team.”
The Magistrate, L. A. Owolabi remanded the defendant in custody and adjourned the case till October 17, 2014.
