Ebola: Amaechi, UNICEF worry over children’s safety

Ahead of the September 22, 2014 resumption date for schools in the country, the wife of the Rivers State Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi, and the United Nations Children Education Fund have expressed worry over the safety of children in the state whenever they return for learning.

The governor’s wife explained on Wednesday that she was particularly concerned with how to keep the children safe from the dreaded Ebola virus.

There has been growing concern over the Ebola virus since a medical doctor, Iyke Enemuo, died after contracting the disease.

The governor’s wife, who is the founder of a non-governmental organisation, the Empowerment Support Initiative, spoke in Port Harcourt at a sensitisation forum on the disease organised by the NGO in collaboration with UNICEF.

The NGO, which also collaborated with the Rivers State Ministry of Health, drew participants from teachers of selected nursery and primary schools and women leaders in the 23 council areas of the state.

She stated that it was necessary to sensitize the teachers and mothers on Ebola virus ahead of schools resumption due to the peculiar nature of the children.

“Our growing concern is on the safety of our children wherever they return to school, this growing concern to mothers and parents have become very worrisome especially on how to keep the children safe from the virus,” she added.
