A former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.); President of the Senate, David Mark; and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha, on Wednesday expressed optimism that a brighter future awaits Nigeria despite the current challenges facing it.
They spoke in separate interviews with State House correspondents shortly after participating in the Presidential Change of Guard Parade held inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja to round up activities marking the nation’s 54th independence.
Gowon who said he remained committed to the unity of the country expressed the belief that Nigeria would remain one indivisible nation beyond 2015 contrary to the predictions that it would break up.
He therefore called on all Nigerians, leaders and followers alike, to be committed to national development .
“I believe in Nigeria. I love Nigeria. And we all must work for Nigeria; that is everybody, including the government and the opposition, in order to make Nigeria great. That is my wish,” Gowon said.
Mark said its current challenges notwithstanding, Nigeria would come out stronger and more viable.
He said all hands must be on the deck to achieve this.
“The future is bright for the country. Nigeria will come out of its current challenges stronger and more united,” he declared.
Ihedioha said it was time for all Nigerians to be united in order to collectively wage war against the nation’s common enemies.
“Division is not an option for us. We must resolve to commonly address our common enemies and collectively decide that we will make Nigeria a great country,” he said.
A member of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Elumelu, also called on Nigerians to rally round President Goodluck Jonathan in order to further deliver dividends of democracy to the people.
