Steps
1
Ask yourself: Where do I start? What do I like? What are my skills? Develop your ideas around the skills you know you have. Languages student? How about a device that helps the user learn languages? Cycle enthusiast? Bike security and cyclewear is a big industry.
2
Identify a product gap: Find something people really need. For instance, how often do you lose your socks? Is there any invention that could help in that area?
3
Be enthusiastic. Let your flow of ideas inspire you. If you get something in that THING on top of your shoulders, good.
4
Research. This is the hardest part, but it's not hard at all if you think. Look for "gaps" in the world that need filling, a little like a business looking for a product niche. You may also need to educate yourself on a few points. Going back to the language device mentioned earlier, would you require to learn a programming language?
5
Figure out what you can do with the researched information. Can you make a teleporter,a Lightsaber, or a device to stop global warming? Nothing is impossible. Keep thinking.
6
Stick with it: Times can get tough, ideas can become stagnant and it's easy to become pessimistic, but the rewards could be well worth it. DaVinci's famous ideas the tank, the helicopter and even the computer were never built in his lifetime yet he remains an inspiration for inventors everywhere.
Tips
Take inspiration from inventors from the past: DaVinci, Jefferson, Disraeli, Tesla...the list goes on...
Right on "safety" But not too safe, there are inherent risks in inventing, so be positive.
Be safety smart.
