NUC wants Power to Punish Illegal Universities

The National Universities Commission (NUC), has called for a review of the NUC laws by the National Assembly, to give the Commission more powers to sanction degree mills, operating in the country as well as universities that flout guidelines.

Receiving the House of Representatives’ Committee on Education, led by its Chairman, Honourable Aminu Suleiman Fagge, on an oversight visit to NUC, Professor Okojie, who was represented by the Deputy Executive Secretary, (Administration), Mr. Akinbode Agbaoye, urged the lawmakers to assist the Commission by enacting laws that would enable the NUC prosecute illegal universities, saying that ‘‘because we don’t have the power to prosecute such degree mills, they keep resurfacing.’’
He added that the Commission was spending huge resources to get rid of the menace of the illegal institutions, hence the need to have laws that would empower it to deal with defaulters of its operational procedure among its stakeholders, including none cooperating professional bodies.
