IMSU Postpones 2014/2015 Matriculation Ceremony
The management of Imo State University has postponed the 2014/2015 matriculation ceremony.
The ceremony which was earlier scheduled to hold on February 6th, 2015 will now hold on February 7th, 2015.

UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA NSUKKA, MATRICULATES 5600 STUDENTS TOMORROW BEING THE 7th OF FEBRUARY
The 41st matriculation ceremony of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka will hold tomorrow been 7th of February 2015 to admit freshmen formally to full membership of the university.
All freshmen are expected to solemnly and publicly make a declaration of loyalty to the University of Nigeria on that day, on 7th Feb.
The ceremony will take place in the various faculties at both the Nsukka and Enugu campuses of the University at 10.00am.
Full participation in the ceremony, is mandatory for all freshmen. it is mandatory that every matriculated student who is fully cleared will sign the matriculation register.
Any freshman who fails to participate in the ceremony loses the chance of being formally admitted into the university community .Consequently, he or he will be regarded as not having fulfilled the requirements for full studentship in the university.

Guess by now all the venues should have being posted in all faculty bill boards and hence made known to everyone but for those who still don’t know his/her venue, I advice you should meet your course reps or fellow/course mates so as not to be left out.

IT Firms Collaborate to Develop a Software that will Curb Mass failure in UTME
The National Information Technology Development Agency is partnering
with two indigenous software companies, Cinfores Limited and WaveTek
Nigeria Limited to address the increasing rate of mass failure in public
examinations, like Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
The partnership will enable the firms involved to deploy a special e-learning and examination preparatory software known as JAMB BRAINFRIEND.
According to the Managing Director of Cinfores Limited, Mr. Asawo Ibifuro, the idea to introduce the software is to prepare candidates well for the UTME
He also stated that the software would erase any phobia or myths surrounding any electronic examination.

OAU Students React Against FG's Decision to Keep Students in School During Election
The honorable Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau
following his meeting with stake holders and commissioners in the
education sector decided to do away with the idea of shutting school
down during the elections.
According to him this will likely disrupt academic calendar.
However, this seems not to have gone down well with students. Some students of OAU aired their opinions, below is excerpts of their comments;
According to a student, “This is a criminal way of supporting the disenfranchisement of Great Ife students in the coming elections.”
Another student who commented said “I registered for the INEC adhoc job because of the money involved so that I will be able to pay the increased school fees come next semester but with the no election break announcement, I am seriously confused.”
“I pray we have a peaceful election but anything can happen and so, we should see beyond now.
2011 is still fresh in memory! What will the school authorities do if any violence breaks out after the election? Disperse students into the violence? You see the decision to keep students in school is not making any sense” a student said.

UNIUYO Notice to Students on Resumption Date / Registration (2014/2015)
Senate, at its 92nd Meeting held on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015 approved
the commencement of the 2014/2015 academic year with effect from
Monday, March 2, 2015.
The students screening/ registration exercise will
commence on the same date.
Fresh students are to report to their respective faculty screening centres for the screening of their
original credentials, after which they will be cleared to pay fees at designated bank(s) before registering online.
Returning students will follow the laid down procedures for their online registration after the payment of approved fees. It must be stressed that registration
without penalty is for a period of three (3) weeks beginning from March 2, 2015 to March 21, 2015.

NUC Scraps Pass Degree in Universities
The Vice Chancellor of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Prof.
Abdullahi Zuru, during the matriculation ceremony of 2014/2015 admitted
students revealed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has
abolished the pass degree in all Nigerian universities with effect from
the 2013/2014 academic session.
According to him, this implies that the minimum pass mark for courses in the universities will now be 45 per cent, that is, D-grade instead of the previous 40 per cent which was E-grade while the minimum class of grade to be earned by the students will be now be Third Class,”
He, therefore, enjoined the students to work hard to earn their stay in the university.

UDUSOK Matriculates 4,133 for 2014/2015 Academic Session
The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, on Wednesday, matriculated
4,133 students admitted into the institution for the 2014/2015 academic
session.
Speaking at the event the Vice Chancellor,Professor Abdullahi Zuru advised them to shun extremism, bigotry, violence, ethnicity, political intolerance and religious prejudice.
Dean of Students Affairs, Dr Adamu Aliero, who also spoke, warned the students against flouting the rules and regulations of the university.
He assured the students that the management of the institution would continue to accord top priority to their welfare.

FUTMINNA Matriculates 4,250 Students for 2014/2015 Academic Session
The Federal University of Technology Minna recently matriculated
4,250 students admitted for the 2014/2015 academic session at the Gidan
Kwano campus of the institution.
According to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Musbau Akanji, out of the 10, 000 that applied for admission for 2014/2015 session, 6,650 sat for the Post-UTME, 4,743 were offered admission and 4,250 students finally accepted the offer of admission.
He urged the students to restrain from going against the rules and regulations of the institution, such as examination malpractice, frauds of all kinds, financial racketeering, cultism, fighting, theft, assault, rumour mongering and illicit drug dealing.
He said a Commitee Against Anti-Social Activities (CASA) has been set up to counsel and monitor students’ activities on the university’s two campuses; Bosso and Gidan Kwano.

OSUSTECH Graduates 5000 Students
About 5,000 students from the faculties of Management Sciences,
Environmental Studies and Engineering of Osun State College of
Technology, Esa-Oke during the combined Convocation Ceremony graduates
of 2008/2009 academic session to 2012/2013 sessions received various

400,000 Candidates Admitted out of 1.6 Million that Sat for 2014 UTME
Abel Cain, the resource person to the Global Organization on Open
Education Resources and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), has
disclosed that only about 400,000 candidates out of a total of 1.6
million that sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination
(UTME) in Nigeria were able to secure admission for 2014/2015 session.
He made this known during a workshop for staff and management of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Lagos.
He described as alarming the inability of candidates to gain admission into various tertiary institutions in the country.
According to him, for the country to overcome this challenge, open and distance learning system of education must be embraced and empowered.
He mentioned that virtually all the leading universities in the world, including Harvard University, Yale University, among others, have adopted MOOCs as a way of opening up access to all categories of students free of charge.
He made this known during a workshop for staff and management of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Lagos.

NECO Releases Nov/Dec 2014 Examination Results, Records Improvement
The National Examination Council (NECO) has released the results of
2014 November /December External Senior School Certificate Examination.
According to the registrar, Prof Promise Okpalla, 63,445 candidates registered for the examination but only 61,386 actually sat for it.
18,500 candidates passed with five credits and above including English language and Mathematics which represents 30.5 per cent of the total number of candidates who sat for the examination.
While comparing the performance with that of the previous years, the registrar said that there is improvement and it will continue to be so adding that the council introduced innovative quality control mechanism at the various stages of our examination which has helped to check mate examination malpractice as the council recorded no leakage in the examination.

H. Agricultural Technology (National Diploma) – Five credit level passes of SSCE or its equivalent at not more than two sittings. The five subjects must include Biology/Agricultural Science, Maths, and any three of the following. Geography, Food and Nutrition, Economics, Technical Drawing, English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Nigerian Language, Home Economics. At least credit passes in English Language and Chemistry are compulsory. JAMB subject combination: Biology/Agric science, chemistry and any other science subject.

FUTA to Establish a Medical School and a Teaching Hospital
It was learnt that Federal University of Technology, Akure, will soon
establish a medical school as well as a teaching hospital to complement
its School of Basic Sciences.
This was made known by the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola, on Monday following the National Universities Commission’s approval granted to the university to establish a School of Health and Health Technology.
According to him, the new departments will take off next academic session with courses, such as Physiology, Anatomy, Dental Technology and Optometry.
In his words, “We’ve received the nod to set up departments of Anatomy and Physiology having previously established a Department of Biochemistry.
So, we are starting with degrees in the basic medical sciences and ultimately to end up with a teaching hospital. These two new departments are precursors of a medical school because we already have Biochemistry in the School of Sciences.
‘‘Besides, we cannot have health-related courses without having the core, which is medicine. You cannot have optometry and other ancillary courses without a Teaching Hospital, which is at the core. Some of the courses we are starting with are basic medical sciences.
If you are familiar with the training of medical doctors, they start with what is called basic medical sciences. It is when they are well-grounded in these, that they go to the clinical,” he said.

FG Plans to Establish 9 more Universities
The Education Minister, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has revealed that
the Federal Government has concluded plans to approve nine more
universities.
Shekarau stated this in Abuja while X-raying the Nigerian Basic Education Sector (2011-2015).
In his words, “If not for technical reason, another nine would have been approved before now.
Soon, we shall sort out all the outstanding issues and they will receive government approval. This will bring to 113 the number of universities in the country and 18 private universities approved in the last three years.”

The Idea of Sutting Down Schools is Unnecessary - NANS President
The president of National Association of Nigerian Students, Tijani Usman, has considered the idea of shutting down school during elections one that is absurd and unnecessary.
NANS President says, “I do not support the idea of closing schools because of the forthcoming elections. There are many outstanding things to do in the nation’s tertiary institutions.
Many universities have yet to cover their programmes as a result of the industrial action by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities in 2013.
Many schools are still running the 2013/2014 academic session in 2015 and if the authorities decide to close down these institutions, the decision will no doubt compound the woes of the students.
According to him, many students registered and obtained their voter cards on campus and forcing their schools to close would mean disenfranchising them.
“At ABU, Zaria, there are many polling booths. So, what happens to the centres if students are forced to leave the campus?” he asks.
The SUG President, University of Benin Commenting, “The import is that if the school closes for three weeks, the calendar will still be running. This will affect the students, as there will be no extension of lectures and shifting of examination dates. The bigger implication is that students will be at the receiving end of the action.
“On the other hand, if schools are shut, it will help to keep us away from being used by politicians to cause any political unrest.”
Also the SUG President Federal College of Education, Yola, Adamawa State, Joshua David does not support the idea.
According to him, the envisaged violence is merely an assumption. I do not believe that rioting and shedding of blood will accompany the elections. Nevertheless, this does not suggest that all is well in all the schools.
UNIZIK Matriculates Over 6000 Students for 2014/2015 Academic Session
Nnamdi Azikiwe University recently matriculated over 6000 students
admitted in to its various undergraduate programmes for the 2014/2015
academic session.

FG to Decide the Closure of Schools Today in View of the Up coming General Elections
To ensure violence free election the Federal Government will today decide if schools both private and public will go on break.
This is as a result of demands from parents and other stakeholders in the sector calling on the federal government to shut down schools during the election period as schools will be target for miscreants that would want to cause mayhem.
In this regard, the ministry of Education has summoned all commissioners of education and other stakeholders for a meeting by Monday (today) 2pm so that the issue can be discussed.
This is as a result of demands from parents and other stakeholders in the sector calling on the federal government to shut down schools during the election period as schools will be target for miscreants that would want to cause mayhem.

OAU Centre for Distance Learning Matriculates its Pioneer Students

(OAUCDL) has matriculated its pioneer set for the Online Distance
Learning Programme.
During his speech, the Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Bamitale Omole, said: “you have the singular honor of being the first set of students in our eLearning programme, the first of its type in Nigeria. I congratulate you on being pioneers of the eLearning revolution in the country.
I want to assure you that your distant learning mode of admission does not in any way imply inferiority in status, compared to our conventional students, either in terms of lecture delivery or the certificates you receive at the end of your programmes.
Our university guards jealously the integrity of its degrees and diplomas whether obtained in the conventional or distance learning mode. Hence your various curricula have gone through the usual high standards of excellence of the University Senate for which Obafemi Awolowo University is well known.”

Maritime Academy Oron to be Upgraded to a University
President Goodluck Jonathan during his re-election campaign at the
Ibom International Stadium Uyo, Akwa Ibom State Promised to make the
Maritime Academy of Nigeria Oron a University of re-elected.
“In PDP, we believe that Nigeria must move forward; if we are talking about change, let us know what kind of change and what direction,” he said.
He promised to cooperate with the next administration in AkwaIbom State to ensure the state gets its due.
According to him, PDP states has done incredibly well in terms of infrastructures which include new airports, new state universities and sports stadia, as obtained in Akwa Ibom.
He finally urged the people to massively support PDP in the coming elections.
