How to Maintain and Protect a Secret Folder of Files

So, you want a completely invisible and highly protected folder of files, for example a private diary, or financial logs, or maybe some pictures you want to hold onto, but you don't want casual visitors to your computer or even nerds to be able to find or uncover this information? Read on.

Steps

(1) Navigate to C: -OR- plug in an empty and unused USB flash drive and navigate to that drive.
  1. 1
Make a folder named Temp inside C: -OR- the USB drive. Do not protect it.

  2. 2
Make a new folder inside Temp. It does not matter what the name is, for now.

  3. 3
Right-click the folder you just created and select "Properties."

  4. 4
In the pop-up window, click the "Customize" tab.

  5. 5
    Click "Change Icon."

  6. 6
Change the icon to one of the empty spaces. You may need to scroll to the right in the pop-up window.

  7. 7
Click "OK" in the icons pop-up, then "OK" again in the Properties pop-up.

  8. 8
You should still have the newly created folder selected. Press "F2" on the keyboard -OR- right-click and select "Rename."

  9. 9
Hold down the "Alt" key (if on a laptop, hold down the "Fn" key as well) and type on the number pad 0160 -OR- 255.

  10. 10
Put the files in this folder you want to protect.

  11. 11
Open your archive/compress software and drop all the files you want to protect on it.

  12. 12
Look for the security options. Set a password and use the strongest encryption possible. Set the option to obscure the file names as well.

  13. 13
Your software will archive the files. Delete the originals.

  14. 14
Your archive will not open, or show the names of the files inside, without the password.

  15. 15
Rename this to something cryptic like WIN32DIR.ZIP and move it to your Windows or Windows\System folder.
