The Osun State Chapter of the Social Democratic Party has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to disqualify the All Progressives Congress candidate, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, and his Peoples Democratic Party counterpart, Senator Iyiola Omisore.
The party made the demand on the basis that the duo had been flouting the nation’s electoral law which stipulates time limit for election campaign.
In a statement on Friday by the Chairman of SDP in the state, Mr. Ademola Isola, the SDP said the APC and PDP had taken their campaign beyond Thursday which was supposed to be the last day of campaign according to the time-table released by INEC.
According to him, the billboards and several posters advertising their candidates (Aregbesola and Omisore) are still mounted across the state.
He said, “Section 99 (1) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) prohibits advertisements or broadcasts of campaigns 24 hours prior to the day of election, but contrary to this the APC and PDP candidates have ignored this rule.
“Bill-boards by the two candidates asking people for votes are all over the state and we vehemently kicked against it.
“This must not be swept under the carpet. Every party must be treated equally in this election. Those bill-boards are still standing as at the time of my comment. It is against the law.
“We have 90 days to campaign which kicked off on Sunday, May 11 and as expected by August 11, all campaign must have been closed. But INEC has refused to act on this.
“SDP as a party is hereby asking INEC not to count PDP and APC votes in this election. Prof. Attahiru Jega must allow the rule of the game stands.”
