The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities has threatened
another strike if the federal government heeds to the directive from the
Ministry of Education to stop the funding of staff school for children
of university workers.
According to the national Vice-President
of the association, Mr. Alfred Jimoh, at a press conference in Lagos on
Monday, said the renewed attempt to stop federal universities from
funding and paying teachers working at staff primary schools stands as
discrimination and disregard of the 2009 FGN/NASU agreement.
“Institutions
like the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police, Nigeria Navy and Nigeria Air
Force, also established and have continued to operate staff schools,
funded from the public treasury, through the Ministries of Defence and
Police Affairs.”
He stated that the union would defend the
sanctity of this agreement which gives children of university workers
the same privileges of attending schools funded by the treasury as
children of the military and police.
The union also called for
the removal of the Executive Secretary, National Universities
Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, Jimoh; adding that the union will not
hesitate to involve other relevant unions in the threatened strike
action.
