 Steps

Gather Supplies

  1. 1
Purchase several sheets of heavy construction paper in a variety of colors. If you are decorating for the July 4th holiday consider going traditional with red, white and blue sheets of paper. Nearly any size will work but traditional 8 ½ x 11 is fine.

  2. 2
Find a sharp pair of scissors (for adult use), kid-friendly scissors, glue, stapler, tape or hot glue.

  3. 3
Choose decorative items such as stickers, markers you can use to write and color the lanterns, sequins and/or glitter.

Create Lantern

  1. 1
Fold one sheet of construction paper in half. Fold along the width and run your finger along the crease to ensure a tight fold.

  2. 2
Cut paper in half along the fold line. Consider using the sharp scissors to cut the paper in half (an adult should perform this action).

  3. 3
Fold the paper in half lengthwise this time and cut a half of a piece off of one end, which will become the lanterns handle.

  4. 4
Create a series of cuts with the folded end toward you. Stop around one inch from the long end of the paper.

Decorate and Finish Lantern

  1. 1
Unfold the lantern with the folded side facing upward. While the lantern is flat, take this time to decorate with stickers, markers, glitter etc.

  2. 2
Glue handle into place once markers or ink (decorations) have dried. Although glue can be used and is more kid-friendly, using a stapler may allow you to hang and use quicker (otherwise you’ll need time for the glue to dry).

Tips
  • Hang lanterns across a string of colored or clear Christmas lights (low wattage) so they glow.

  Warnings
  • Never use candles or a flame near these paper lanterns.
