Prof. Godwin Oshodin, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, has been flown to a London hospital as a result of a presumed food poisoning he suffered months ago after efforts by medical experts in Nigerian hospitals has proved abortive in ejecting the poison from his system.
Professor Oshodin had earlier as report has expressed fear over what he described as a plan to assassinate him by some staff members that were dismissed this year for unprofessional conduct by the Governing Council.
A group recognized as Benin National Congress BNC, has said they are going to give everything within their disposal to ensure that justice is meted on the people responsible for the alleged assassination attempt on the professor and called on the security agencies to do their best in apprehending those involved or the group will have no other choice than to resort to self-help options in ensuring justice.
According to a statement the group said, “Let it be known that as soon as we confirm the masterminds of these attempted homicide; we may resort to jungle means to avenge this anti-Benin affront on the psyche and land of our great ancestors.
“For 40 years, we were deprived the chance of producing a Vice-Chancellor in the University of Benin. Now, we got one by divine grace, they want to kill him by cruel means. The man has been flown abroad for poison-related issues.
“We are closely monitoring the process of the appointment of Prof. Oshodin’s successor, we need not say that the University is preferably relocated to another state of Nigeria, than for us to give a free hand to discreet poison-killers and blood suckers to overwhelm patriotic administrator like Prof. Oshodin, whose tenure is synonymous with landmarks achievements.”
