Bureaucracy setting Nigeria backward –Ajimobi

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has said that the lopsided structure of official procedure and poorly defined system of government were major factors that set Nigeria backward.

The governor spoke during the launch of a book written by the Caretaker Chairman of Oluyole Local Government Area, Mr. Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye. The book is titled, “Grassroots Governance in Perspective: My Experience in Oluyole Local Government, Oyo State.”

While reacting to the call by the book’s author for full autonomy for local governments in Nigeria, Ajimobi said even the federating states in the country did not enjoy full autonomy, adding that the country had yet to practise true federalism.

The governor said, “To me, government is like a Non-Governmental Organisation, which must provide quality service such that set objectives are met timely and effectively. But bureaucracy makes governance tedious in Nigeria. However, as leaders offered the opportunity to serve, we must find means to deliver qualitative service. A good leader takes people to where they want to be while a great leader takes them to where they ought to be.”

“While it looks desirable for local councils to be autonomous, even states are not truly autonomous because of the lopsided manner in which federalism is practised in Nigeria. But the political leaders must continue to strive to deliver quality services to our people so that our country will join the league of the very best nations of the world.”

National President, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Chief Bayo Oyero, commended the author, describing him as one of the best council chairmen in Ibadan because of his dedication and commitment to the development of the city.
