No fewer than 2000 students, comprising Full-time ND and HND,
Part-time ND and HND, students admitted into the School of Part-time
studies for Day and Evening classes were matriculated by Lagos State
Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) for the 2014/2015 academic session.
Speaking
at the event, the Rector, Dr. Abdulazeez Lawal, enjoined the
matriculating students not to see the ceremony as a routine in the
Polytechnic calendar but as one of the cherished ceremonies of tertiary
education without which one could not be referred to as a full-fledge
student to study in the Polytechnic, adding that matriculation ceremony
is the climax of the admission process in tertiary institutions the
world over.
The Rector disclosed that in order to graduate
students qualified to tackle challenges posed by the rapid socioeconomic
development of Nigeria and the world at large, the institution now
places great premium on academic research in areas of Engineering,
Science and Technology, Environmental Studies, Mass Communication,
Finance, Management, and Business Studies.
According to Him, “the
realization of the goals of the institution, which currently runs 58
accredited academic programmes, spread across 38 academic departments in
seven Full-Time schools as well as Schools of Part-Time studies at
Isolo, Ikorodu and Surulere Campuses, is being pursued by putting in
place well stocked libraries, fully equipped laboratories,
infrastructural development and an academic assessment team to
periodically evaluates the quality of teaching in the Polytechnic in
order to ensure compliance with global standard’’.
He further He
further disclosed to grapevine that as a step
towards reducing the unemployment rate in Nigeria, the institution
complements the theories being taught in the classrooms with practical
ICT and Entrepreneurship Development Programmes for the students so as
to adequately equip them with employable skills.
Administering
the matriculating oath, the Registrar, Mrs. Aderonke Olufunke Ige,
charged the students to abide by all the Polytechnic regulations
contained in the Students Handbook and be guided by the institution’s
core values of hard work, integrity, knowledge, excellence, honesty and
service.
She also implored them to shun vices like cultism so as
not to tarnish the good name of their families, while also advising them
to focus on their academic activities to have a bright and rewarding
future.
Present at the ceremony were members of the school management, Lecturers, parents and relations of the matriculating students.
