The Executive Director, Doregos Private Academy, Ipaja, Lagos, Mr.
Bernardino Doregos, has called on the government to reconsider certain
levies and taxes giving to private schools.
Doregos said this during the 25th anniversary of the school on Wednesday.
He noted that government agencies, unfortunately, impose some of these taxes and demands.
He
said, “What we call tax is usually the income tax paid by employees of
the school. However, there are levies, what I call stealth taxes. You
have a school bus and you have to get a mobile advert permit from the
Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency. The Federal Government
will also demand its own permit as well. The Federal Road Safety
Commission has equally asked private schools to paint our school buses
yellow and pay other fees.
“Government pays for the West African
Senior Certificate Examination for pupils in public schools but parents
whose children attend private schools are made to pay for the
examination. Are they not also citizens of this country? I do not know
why they are being asked to pay,” he said.
On the secret of the school’s sustainability, the director attributed it to commitment and passion.
He
added, “It has been great. From 15 pupils in 1990 to over 600 pupils,
our passion has kept us going in spite of challenges. We have never
compromised on our standards, in as much as the competition is fierce.
The attraction for private education has grown because parents want
personal attention. You are directly in touch with the proprietor but in
public schools, you cannot see the government. The buck stops with the
principal or the head teacher.”
