UNILAG Lifts Ban on Student Unionism After 10 Years

The authorities of the University of Lagos have lifted the ban on student unionism in the institution.

The students union of UNILAG was banned 10 years ago following a violent protest by the union which destroyed the residence of the then VC, Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe, among many other property belonging to the university.

The lifting of the ban was announced BY THE Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rahmon Bello during the 2014/2015 matriculation ceremony.

“Having being satisfied that student unionism has regenerated itself to maturity after the unfortunate incident of 2005 that led to the suspension of student union activities and the recent endorsement of the University of Lagos Student Union Constitution, the management has approved the unbanning of student unionism in the university.” The VC stated.
