Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) 2015 Recruitment: Applicants To Use CBT For Examination

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) said Computer-Based Test (CBT) would be used to conduct examinations for applicants of the 2015 recruitment into the service.

Mr. Chukwuemeka Obua, the Public Relations Officer of the service, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.

Obua said this was to prevent a reoccurrence of the 2014 recruitment where a stampede was recorded at various centres across the country due to large crowd of applicants.

He said the CBT would also be used to conduct the examination in order to test the computer literacy level of applicants.

He said this was a basic requirement for employment into the service.

“This is the process that will be adopted for the recruitment in order to prevent the reoccurrence of the past incident. Four or five computer centres will be designated in each state of the federation.

“Applicants will be divided according to these centres and they will be communicated online individually the date they are required to sit for the examination and the location in order to prevent over-crowding in centres and cases of non-applicants in attendance,” he said.

The spokesman said the CBT was a global trend accepted and used worldwide to conduct examinations.

He said the device was chosen to prevent the rigours associated with paper-based examinations.

He said that applicants would not be required to bring any writing materials; rather, they would only need their password which was the registration number to log into the computer, answer the test and submit online.

Obua said after the test, successful applicants would be contacted individually and asked to report to designated immigration offices across the country where they would be further examined.

“At this stage, we will do the physical examination to check the height, presence of any physical disabilities and general state of health of applicants to ensure that they are fit to carry out their duties when employed.

“Documents of applicants will also be reviewed during the examination after which successful candidates will be contacted online informing them of their acceptance into the service,” he said.

Students In South-West Pledge To Vote Jonathan

The Coalition of Indigenous Students Association of Nigeria in the South-West on Wednesday pledge to vote President Goodluck Jonathan
The coalition, comprising students from Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Lagos and Ogun, assured President Goodluck Jonathan of victory at the March 28 election .
Mr George Philips, spokesman for the students, in an interview with the news agency of Nigeria urged students to vote for the continuity of President Jonathan.
Philips said the call was based on Government’s achievements in the education sector, including the various youth empowerment programmes.
According to him, Jonathan’s commitment to education in the last four years shows in the establishment of 12 federal universities, polytechnics and Almajiri schools.
“Many youth empowerment schemes have proved that the government of the day is not just paying lip service to the development of the Nigerian youths.
“ The 2015 election is about the future of this country and most importantly the youths.
“ Jonathan has given us improved education, empowerment through YouWin and other schemes against the primordial empowerments with bicycles and tricycles.
“We cannot afford retrogression. Jonathan convened the National Conference and he will actualize the decisions reached at the conference.
“Students strongly believe that he has done well and if we give him another term, he can do much more’’, Philips said.
Mr Ayodeji Ologun, the Leader of the United Mandate, said the group had found it necessary to enlighten and encourage the students.

WAEC Urged to Introduce Group-Work in Marking Scheme

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has been urged to introduce group work in their marking scheme.

This was coming from the guest lecturer, Mr Augustine Ngafuan who is the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Liberia during WAEC’s 20th Annual Endowment Fund Lecture held at Multipurpose Hall, WAEC International Office in Ikeja, Lagos.

According to him, in the job world, our performances or destiny is affected by the actions or inactions of others since many tasks have to be executed in teams.

“In order to encourage team works and skills in youth, WAEC working with school administrators can derive a system whereby a student’s final score in WAEC exam is the combination of his scores plus an extra point that
takes into consideration group or team performance. Thus, the student’s final score becomes an aggregate of the individual score in an exam, plus the score of the team which the student was a member.” Ngafuan emphasized.

10 Strategic Job Search Tips For Every Fresh Graduate

Job search could be a great challenge for many fresh graduates and a nightmare to some others. However, if you take strategic steps, you could be on your way to landing your first job sooner than you think.

Here are 10 strategic job search tips that will give you an edge and increase your chances of getting a job sooner than you think.

1. Change Your Attitude: Don’t start your job search with the mindset that there are no jobs. There are jobs out there. Your attitude usually matters and influences the outcome of your pursuit. The statistics of unemployment rate may have made you to believe that there are no jobs. However, many companies are still on the lookout for the right candidates. The first tip is to have the mindset that there is still job out there for the right candidates. What you should now think of is “how can I be the right candidate”?

2. Start Your Job Hunting Early: Many graduates’ starts think that the search for a job begins after they graduate. I think this is a wrong approach. You should be able to be clear on the kind of jobs you want. Start gathering facts about companies you would like to work for, what is required to work for such companies etc. right before you graduate. Success in job search is ultimately based on the level of information you have. The more informed you are the better your chances.

Give Attention To Your Resume/CV and Cover Letter: One thing I would like to make you understand here is that there is nothing like a perfect CV. But your Resume/CV should be impressive. The major purpose of a Resume/CV is to get you an interview appointment.

However, you need to bear the following in mind;
-Your CV should be relevant to the job you are applying for. Don’t use one CV for all your job applications. Tailor-make your CV to be specific to each job you are applying for.

-Make it clear, concise and honest.

-Provide key information like personal details, including name, address, phone number, and email address. However, information like age, Political, Gender, Or Religious preferences are not needed unless otherwise specified as a requirement.

-Highlight your skills/strengths, achievements and relevant experiences.

-Avoid errors. Ask a friend to go through it. We usually don’t see our own errors.

A cover letter is a letter sent with your CV that basically provides information on why you are qualified for the job you are applying for and the contributions you can make if employed.

Nigerian Universities Will Compete With Other Universities Across The World – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed confidence that Nigerian universities would rank among the best in the world in the next four years, as a result of the ongoing transformation of the education system.

Jonathan, who featured in the Presidential Debate organised by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group on Sunday in Abuja, said that Nigerian universities had been equipped to compete with their foreign counterparts.

Jonathan said that education was a responsibility of both states and the federal governments, adding that the present administration gives support to the states through the Universal Basic Education Commission.

Jonathan said, “We all feel bad that no Nigerian university was ranked but we are working assiduously  to change the trend.

“We have equipped most of our universities through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

“We are talking about infrastructure that has failed over the years but with the way we are going, in the next four years our universities will compete with other universities across the world.

Also speaking, Mr Godson Okoye, the presidential candidate of United Democratic Party, decried the situation where people who had benefited from free education turned education to business.

“We must re-engineer education right from nursery schools; teachers training colleges must be revisited,” he said.

Prof. Oluremi Sonaiya, the presidential candidate of KOWA party, said the whole focus should not be on formal education but a broad-based education.

Universities Workers Begin Strike April 28

Universities lecturers under the auspices of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has vowed to embark on strike from April 28 if the National Universities Commission (NUC) does not withdraw the circular it released which annihilate the sanctity of the 2009 FGN/University-based unions’ agreement.”

The union is also calling for the immediate implementation of the 2009 agreement which aims to improve infrastructure and staff welfare in Nigerian universities.

SSANU, in a communiqué issued at its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Obudu Mountain Resort, Cross River State, accused the NUC of unilaterally expunging the aspect of the agreement on university demonstration staff schools.

The union condemned the failure of government to pay outstanding ‘Earned Allowance’ arrears and political statements being made by government functionaries regarding the payment which has put serious pressure on union leadership at both the national and branch levels.

The communiqué which was signed by the union’s President Comrade Samson Ugokwe, charged the federal government to also set up a committee to renegotiate the agreement.

It said “for the avoidance of doubt, if by April 28, 2015 the circular has not been withdrawn by NUC, the union will take labour action against the Federal Government,” while frowning at the “overbearing attitude and unnecessary roles of the National Universities Commission (NUC) in this regard. SSANU warns the NUC to stop its undue meddling and interference in the affairs of the universities, so as not to overheat the Nigerian university system.

She named the students as Abdulsalam Abduljalil, Tijjani Mohammed and William Seyi Solanke, all of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences. The management has directed that the result of the three students be withheld.

ASUU Slam FG Over Failure To Release N1.3trn

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has condemned the Federal Government’s over the failure to release the sum of N1.3tr meant for the revitalisation of the nation’s universities.

Chairman of the University of Ibadan chapter of the union, Prof. Segun Ajiboye, who made the disclosure in Ibadan during the University of Ibadan 63rd Post-Graduate School Interdisciplinary Discourse  said, the Federal Government agreed to release the amount meant for the institutions over a period of five years, with the first disbursement being N200bn in 2013, while N220b was agreed to be released in each of the four remaining years. The agreement led to ASUU’s suspension of its last strike in December 2013.

Ajiboye said,“An expression of the lack of integrity is failure to keep a promise made in public. For example, the Federal Government has failed to release the promised sum of N1.3tr National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy’s intervention fund beyond the 200bn released for 2013. Since the release of the first batch of the money, no money was released in 2014 while a quarter of 2015 has passed with nothing from the government.”

He added that the lack of integrity on the part of the government and its officials led to the 19 strikes which the union had embarked upon between 1992 and 2013.

Fagge, who was at the University of Ibadan 63 Interdisciplinary Discourse also lamented that the reasons for going on series of strikes for 21 years were hinged on governments not honouring their the agreements they freely signed with the university lecturers.

According to the ASUU president, while the federal government continues to cripple the operation of public universities through stiffening under funding, the effects of such deliberate action of government are the “Contemporary assessment of products of the system characterized them as unemployable and lacking in basic social, emotional and literacy skills. The educational curricula, programmes and pedagogy today are as irrelevant and unrealistic as they were in colonial times.”

Speaking on the topic “ASUU struggles and the Revitilisation of Public University Education in Nigeria”, Fagge, who was represented by his Vice president, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, said the condition fuelling ASUU strikes included poor funding, inadequate remuneration, inadequate capacity, brain drain, poor infrastructure, violation of university autonomy and academic freedom, failure of government to implement recommendations of its own review panels, violations of agreements freely entered into by governments, inconsistent policies and poor planning, corruption and poor management of funds by university administrators.”

JAMB 2015 CBT: All Results Would Soon Be Released —JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Monday said that results of all candidates who sat for the 2015 UTME Computer Based Test (CBT) would soon be released.

There were bucket loads of complaints by some candidates who wrote the CBT examination which ended nationwide on March 21.

According to the candidates, the inability of some of them to receive the results of the CBT mode of examination is undermining the procedures on instant feed back.

The JAMB Public Relations Officer, Mr Fabian Benjamin, said in Lagos that the board regretted the development, blaming the hitch on telecommunication network problem.

Benjamin urged the affected candidates to remain calm as efforts were on to tackle the issue.

“We want to assure all candidates who took the CBT  examination, whose results were still pending, that they will soon get their results.
“The major cause of the delay is that of network.

“But now that the examinations are over and we are all back from the field, we are putting everything in place to ensure that these results are released without further delay.

“I want to assure that the board is doing a lot to ensure that the candidates and the people of Nigeria are given the best at all times.
“I am sure that this development will not repeat itself.
JAMB 2015 UTME Cut-Off Marks For Admission Into Nigeria Institutions

“But having said that, I want to state that some of the challenges associated with the delay are as a result of poor data information on the part of the candidates,” he said.

Benjamin, who described the conduct of this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as the best ever in the history of the board, appealed to Nigerians for support.

UNILAG Post-UTME 2015/2016 Update and Advice

Hmm! It took me time to compile this, but I am actually doing this to help all the unilag aspirants, the remaining is left for you to do.

First of all, you need to know how your aggregate score is calculated.

The utme total mark is 400 and also the post utme total mark is 40. To get one’s aggregate, your utme score is divided by 8 and then your post utme
score is multiplied by 1.25. Let me give a quintessential.

If one gets 250 in utme, the person divides the 250 by 8 to get his/her score over 50, I.e 250/8=31.25,
therefore the person scored 31.25/50 in his utme. And if one gets 30/40 in the post utme, the person should
multiply his score by 1.25 to get his/ her score over 50, therefore if the person got 30, his score over 50 is 30*1.5=37.5 which means the person got 31.5 in his utme and 37.5 in his post utme, the addition of both
scores would give you your aggregate.

The person’s aggregate over 100 is 31.5+37.5=69% which is his/her score. I hope you now know how to calculate
your aggregate. Ok let’s move to another important aspect which is the examination proper and the
preparation.

2) People have been asking; what subjects are we writing in our post utme? Is it tough? How does it look
like? Well! These questions are very intelligent ones.
For your post utme, you would be assessed with three subjects which are Mathematics, English language
and general paper.

I. The Mathematics contains 50% further mathematics, and 50% pure mathematics, but note, no calculus is
involved, by calculus I mean no integration or differentiation. You could see expansion, simplify or
prove that…polynomials. Then your statistics like
mean, median, range, mode, etc for normal maths and do not forget probability. Sorry I almost forgot, your indices is also important.

II. As for your English language, do not be scared, there is no comprehension because of the Little time. Just practice your concord, normal lexis (fill in the gap), Little Oral english, antonyms and synonyms.

III. For your general paper, just know things about unilag like the present vice chancellor’s name, the former v.c’s name, the year the institution was established or founded. Also learn about this years presidential election. Just listen to news at this period. If you are a lover of cartoons and movies, you better start being a lover of world news and local
Nigerian news. Also visit www.generalworldknowledge.com for general knowledge like the longest river, the highest mountain bla bla…

Also get a current affairs pamphlet of about 100 naira in the market, please buy the current one oooh!! I mean the one of 2014 and probably 2015, if you
see that in the market.

You should also study your utme past questions also, because unilag might decide to add your jamb combination in your general paper, like someone who did physics, chemistry, biology and English in utme can see the physics, chemistry and biology in the general paper, so don’t ignore or throw away your utme past questions, still keep practicing. But pay more
attention to the maths,English and general paper.

3) I discovered that most people don’t know about the timing and how to go about it, that is why people study hard for the exam and still fail the exam. That is not your portion. Ok let’s start from here.

You have forty questions in your post-utme with only thirty minutes to answer them. How difficult right? you
see how unrealistic it looks, but it is possible, it takes intelligence and smartness to pass your utme not just intelligence. Oh! I almost forgot, the mathematics is 15 questions, English is 15 questions and general paper is 10 questions making it a total of 40 questions.

Now when you enter the examination hall you must be confident and avoid distractions by other candidates or invigilators, complain if you have problem with your computer and pray before starting. You have done a cbt exam so I don’t need to lecture you about that.

Let me give you a secret. If you have started, usually the questions are scattered, start from number one
question, if you don’t know it, don’t skip it ooh!

Click any answer and then write down that number that you don’t know, move to number two, if you know it, do it, if you are not sure still, just click on anything your mind directs you to and then write down the number so that if you are through and you still have time, you can still go back to those numbers, but if your time is up, at least you have clicked on something that is probably 50% right and 50% wrong. Just make sure you answer all the questions.

Please and please, submit by yourself to avoid stories, click on the submit button, don’t Let it submit automatically, though there is nothing wrong in an automatic submission, but it is better you do it buy yourself at least 30 seconds till the expiration of your time.

4) Go early for your exam, please be punctual, unilag don’t accept poo! Sorry I used that. Note that scientific calculator is not allowed, all that are allowed are your normal calculator ( like jamb calculator), pencil or pen and your examination pass.(These would be communicated to you before your examination).

6) yea! Yea! I finally remembered after thinking so hard to remember the most important point. Some people have been questions like, what do I need to score to get finance, civil engineering, pharmacy etc and I have being given them a rather inconsequential and wrong answer(s), sorry for that. The right answer is that you should get 40 in your post utme. Aim for the highest score, don’t aim for 25 or 27 or worst 39. Aim for 40 and you would be surprised when you see yourself scoring 40, it is not impossible.

2015 UTME: Over 895,000 Candidates Have Received Their Results – JAMB Registrar

The Joint Admission And Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Wednesday, disclosed that the board had successfully processed and released over 895, 000 results of candidates, who sat for the 2015 UTME.

Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB), Prof Dibu Ojerinde, who made this know to newsmen during a supervision exercise, said that the scores were sent to the mobile phones of the candidates.

Ojerinde insisted that the results were released about two hours after examination, directly to the mobile phones supplied to the board by the candidates.

The JAMB boss clarified that some candidates failed to get their results because they gave wrong numbers, while also urging such candidates to check the results online on the board’s website ,using their registration number.

He said the introduction CBT had eliminated the problems of examination malpractices, especially ,impersonation, that characterised the conduct of public examination.

Ojerinde noted that a total of 400 certified examination centres were being used for the kick-off of the full-blown Computer Based Test (CBT) this year, adding that the examination would be seamless next year when new centres would have been approved in addition to those to be established by the government.

He admitted that there were few challenges encountered on the first day of the examination in some of the centres across the nation but said that the board had overcome those hiccups as the examination is progressing smoothly in all the centres.

FG To Create JAMB e-testing Centres In Over 774 LGs

The Federal Government is to construct over 774 e-examination centres for the conduct of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of JAMB, Professor ‘Dibu Ojerinde, who made this known on Thursday, in Abuja, said President Goodluck Jonathan had given commitment towards ensuring that the Information Communication Technology (ICT) centres were ready before 2016 UTME.

He spoke while he was joined by the Minister of State for Education, Professor Viola Onwuliri, on the monitoring of the ongoing UTME, in Abuja.

The minister in her remark, commended JAMB for the introduction of e-testing, which she said ,was in tune with the global trend.

Prof.essor Onwuliri, reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to open more access to tertiary education, saying government was concerned about the low carrying capacity of the current universities in the country.

She said she was particularly impressed by the enthusiasm of the candidates in embracing CBT, especially, the virtually impaired, who sat comfortably for the examination.

Onwuliri, stressed that the current administration of Jonathan places emphasis on excellence and the introduction of CBT, would further strengthen the quality of education in the country.

Post UTME would soon be scrapped- JAMB Registrar

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of JAMB, Professor ‘Dibu Ojerinde, on Saturday said that the Post-UTME  would soon be scrapped.

Ojerinde said, With time, post UTME will be a thing of the past. It (post UTME) is there because people doubt the scores. But there is no need to doubt the scores now because we know it is genuine.

From last year’s exercise, 617, 000 candidates took the CBT and there was no single exam malpractice, a lot of them are in the university now and they even performed better than the paper pencil people. I know at the end of the day, it will be minimum examination malpractice and that may come as a result of lateness, which is regarded as malpractice because if you come late, we cancel your result. We will not allow you to do the exams and if you do the exams, we will cancel it. Parents to teach their child the ways of the Lord and when he grows, he will not depart from it. Teach them how to be punctual, teach them how to take their studies seriously, teach them how to obey laws and order and they will key into it for the rest of their lives. That is the beginning of the discipline that we’re talking about. Punctuality is a path of discipline that we want to impose on the lives of our children”.

Ojerinde also says that Computer-Based Test has reduce examination malpractice and other forms of irregularities.

“The introduction of the Computer-Based Test has reduced the level of leakages of exam papers. Anybody who goes out and says these are the questions they will ask me and that person believes that he is going in to meet the same kind of questions in the exam hall will be disappointed. He is not going to meet the same questions, so it is zero per cent leakage. I can prove that to you that examination malpractice has been completely reduced.

As the candidates sit by their systems, you can see them and their pictures on their screens. If a male is sitting down and you see a female picture, wouldn’t you know he’s not the right candidate? The system of biometrics will even expose them. The process of examination attendance list will expose them, so most of these problems that we encountered are gone.”

Unknown Gunmen Kill UNILAG Student

Pandemonium struck on Tuesday in the amphitheatre area of the University of Lagos after a student was shot dead by  unidentified gummen. Our correspondent gathered that the incident happened around 9pm while some students were relaxing in the area.

A source in the area said the victim was running for the post of sports Secretary SUG before he met his untimely death.

The amphitheatre is a place where some students of the institution hold religious and social meetings, while others have sporting and academic activities.

An undergraduate of the institution, Kayode Odeowo, told our correspondent that there were students at the popular spot when the incident happened.

He said, “There were a lot of people there on Tuesday night. The guy was also with a lady and they were having fun. He was taking selfies and drinking away.

“A group of guys showed up and there was an exchange of words between them. Then they dared him to stay if he was man enough.

“Some people quickly left the place, but he still waited. Before anybody realised what was happening, there was a sound of gunshot.

“He was shot in the neck and he fell down. The girl beside him fainted.”

It was learnt that in the ensuing confusion, frightened students ran into the school’s Protestant’s chapel, which was opposite the scene of the incident.

A student of the school, who did not identify himself, said his classmate who was also around fled, leaving behind her phone and other personal effects.

When our correspondent visited the scene of the incident on Wednesday, he was told that some security operatives of the school had taken away the corpse.

A bottle of unfinished soft drink and a covered plastic plate of rice were sighted at the exact spot where blood stains dotted the ground.

A student, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told our correspondent the yet-to-be-identified student was killed because he was among those contesting the position for the Sports Secretary of the University of Lagos Student Union, ULSU.

He said, “I learnt he was killed by some guys who wanted to take his place as the Sports Secretary of ULSU.”

Another student of the school, Oduyemi Gboko, said it was a case of cult attack.

A female student who preferred anonymity condemn the act in totality

She said, “We condemn the dastardly act, we sympathize with the family of the deceased and pray God to give them the fortitude to bear the irredeemable loss.

When our correspondent contacted the Head of the Information Unit of UNILAG, Olagoke Oke, he denied that the victim was a student.

He said the deceased was trailed into the university from the Yaba College of Technology.

He said, “He was a young man, no doubt about that, but he was not our student. He was trailed from Yabatech into the campus where he was shot.

“Investigation is ongoing and we have increased our security measures to forestall a recurrence.”

On the claim that the victim was an aspirant for a position in ULSU, Awopeju Idowu, an undergraduate of UNILAG and the head of the campaign committee of a presidential aspirant, said there was no truth in the claim.

He said, “I have it on good authority that the man was not our student.

“I can tell you categorically that it was not connected with the students union election as erroneously and regrettably being widely speculated. I have spoken with highly credible sources who have told me he had no business in the University of Lagos.”

The spokesperson for Yabatech, Mr. Charles Oni, said he was not aware of the incident, adding that the deceased could not have been a student of the school.

He added, “If he were our student, we would have heard. We have been in the office since morning and no information like that has been received. I wouldn’t know why everybody is just spreading false information about our school.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, said the police were working to apprehend those behind the act.

“He was killed inside the sports arena. He was first rushed to the UNILAG medical centre where he was confirmed dead.

“His identity has not been ascertained, but the corpse has been deposited in the morgue. Efforts are on to unravel his killers and the circumstances that led to his gruesome murder,” he said.
