The Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Professor Chris Bolu, has hinted
that Federal University Oye-Ekiti is in a hurry to become the best
university in the world.
Professor Bolu made this assertion while
representing the Vice Chancellor in a media chat Federal Radio
Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, in company of FUOYE News Bulletin crew at
Ikole. He commended the Federal Government for providing funds for the
construction of the different edifices that dot the entire landscape of
the university today.
The Dean disclosed that as at the moment,
the university at three years, has faculty buildings, administrative
complexes, ICT complexes in the two campuses and an Engineering workshop
under construction, not to mention the Faculty of Agricultures large
farm and Engineering workshop. He disclosed that the university was
building (in both campuses) state-of-the-art hostels complete with
swimming pool and other recreational facilities.
This according to him will be the first of its kind in this part of the world.
Celebrating
the achievements of the university in such a short period of its
existence, Professor Bolu recollected that the young university has
recently been ranked 16th among all Nigerian universities in the 2015
Webometrics ranking and 24 by the Nigerian Universities Commission.
He
however noted that though the Federal Government has provided funds for
the university, this has not been enough. He likened the Government to a
mother with 12 children and with limited resources to cater for their
needs.
Speaking further, Professor Bolu said that the university
has made tremendous positive impact on its two host communities in
economic, social and even religious spheres. According to him, the
influx of both staff and students into the towns has created a big
market for them and has thereby increased their earnings; social life
has improved with stepped up social activities, while churches have also
recorded increase in membership and takings.
He asserted that
the cordial relationship between the university and its host communities
has resulted in goodwill gestures such as the donation of a 3 5OKVA
power generating set worth 10 million naira to the university by the
people of Ikole kingdom. According to him, every adult, including petty
traders, contributed to the donation as show of benevolence. On its
part, the university has always directed its research endeavours to the
host communities especially in the area of providing them with improved
varieties of crops.
