Universities lecturers under the auspices of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has vowed to embark on strike from April 28 if the National Universities Commission (NUC) does not withdraw the circular it released which annihilate the sanctity of the 2009 FGN/University-based unions’ agreement.”
The union is also calling for the immediate implementation of the 2009 agreement which aims to improve infrastructure and staff welfare in Nigerian universities.
SSANU, in a communiqué issued at its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Obudu Mountain Resort, Cross River State, accused the NUC of unilaterally expunging the aspect of the agreement on university demonstration staff schools.
The union condemned the failure of government to pay outstanding ‘Earned Allowance’ arrears and political statements being made by government functionaries regarding the payment which has put serious pressure on union leadership at both the national and branch levels.
The communiqué which was signed by the union’s President Comrade Samson Ugokwe, charged the federal government to also set up a committee to renegotiate the agreement.
It said “for the avoidance of doubt, if by April 28, 2015 the circular has not been withdrawn by NUC, the union will take labour action against the Federal Government,” while frowning at the “overbearing attitude and unnecessary roles of the National Universities Commission (NUC) in this regard. SSANU warns the NUC to stop its undue meddling and interference in the affairs of the universities, so as not to overheat the Nigerian university system.
