French Embassy Scholarships Programme for South African Citizens and Graduates

Launched in 2010, the French Embassy Scholarship Programme form part of the commitment between France and South Africa to establish fruitful partnerships between their universities while building a vast network of academic and professional contacts.

The scholarships, which gives out at least 20 scholarships per year, covers tuition fees, visa fees and more. This programme has delivered Master’s graduates in various fields, including Business, Law, Social Sciences, Engineering, etc.

The Embassy of France in South Africa has opened applications for its 2015/2016 Master scholarship programmes. It consists of the SAFeThink scholarship programme (for the Humanities) and the French Embassy Master scholarship programme (for all other fields of study).

About 20 or more scholarships are allocated to be given out per year.

In 2014, the Embassy of France in South Africa offered 25 bursaries to South African graduates to pursue their Master’s studies in France.

Sponsorship duration
The scholarships are for the duration of one French academic year, renewable once.

Scholarship benefits
They include:

The tuition fees,
   
The Schengen visa fees,
   
A monthly stipend towards living expenses,
   
Health insurance and
   
The flight tickets.


CRITERIA

As more and more Master programmes are taught in English, basic knowledge of French is desirable, but not required. Master’s level studies have included fields like Finance, Economics, Engineering, Public Relations, Media, Business, Journalism, Fashion, International Relations and Political Science, Biology and Sport Science.

The Humanities Programme has: (a) the Master Programme which funds outstanding students wishing to undertake a Master’s degree at a French Higher Education Institution; and (b) the Research Programme allows PhD students and researchers to undertake a joint research project in France.

For All Other Fields of Study, applicants must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree. This scholarship is for Masters degree programmes only.

Students are selected based on criteria of academic merit, motivation, previous experience and their career objectives.

For the French Embassy SAFeThink scholarship programme: Master’s degree in political or social sciences (international relations, public affairs, security studies, conflict studies, human rights/ humanitarian law, development studies, etc). Also PhD level joint research projects on any approved topics or fields.

For the French Embassy Master scholarship programme: Master’s degree in all fields of study except humanities (engineering, management, economics / finance, IT, architecture/design, sports, biology, etc).

DEADLINE:
The deadline for applications for the French Embassy Scholarship Programmes for 2015-2016 is March 23, 2015.

Please note that applications for the Research Programme are accepted throughout the year, but should be submitted at least 2 months before the envisioned departure for France.

The French Embassy Scholarship Programme consists of the SAFeThink scholarship programme (for the Humanities) and the French Embassy Master scholarship programme (for all other fields of study).

These bursaries are offered annually to students to promote Franco-South African academic exchange and cooperation, and are funded by the French government, managed by the French government agency Campus France, which also has an office in South Africa.
