In order to make teaching and learning easier for staff, students and all stakeholders, the Federal University of Technology, Akure through its Implementation Monitoring Committee on Improvement of Laboratories and Classrooms (IMCLC) recently organized a one day Seminar for all stakeholders accessing Direct Teaching and Laboratory Cost (DTLC) in the University. Welcoming participants to the Seminar, Chairman, IMCLC, Professor Benjamin Adewuyi said the raison d’etre of the Seminar was to review the performance of departments vis-a-vis accessing the fund available to improve laboratories and classrooms in order to continue to engender a conducive learning environment to achieve effective teaching and learning in the University. According to him, the committee has observed that many departments are not accessing the available fund. He urged them to tap into the available funds for the betterment of the University.

In his remarks at the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebiyi Daramola said the University’s Laboratories and Classrooms “are far from where we want them to be in terms of the quantity and quality of content.” Daramola who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor , Academic , Professor Adedayo Fasakin ,said “Even though we stand tall among the best in Nigeria, our laboratories, libraries and classrooms are yet to be internationally competitive”. Blaming the developments on underfunding of the University, he called on the departments to utilize adequately the opportunity DTLC provides towards adding value to the University’s operations.

Daramola further said since life is not static; there was the need for periodic review and update of knowledge. This is achievable through adequate utilization of special intervention funds DTLC can offer.

Speaking further, an optimistic Daramola said “A forum like this will provide an avenue for all stakeholders; Deans, Heads of Departments and the IMCLC to review the processes and procedures, as well as identify any areas in the accessibly and utilization of the fund with a view to ensuring general improvement”. He also called for transparency and purposefulness in the utilization of the fund to achieve a smooth running of the University and make it globally relevant and competitive.
