Latest report reaching us has it that the National Universities
Commission (NUC) has given its approval of the Ondo State University
Medical Sciences, Ondo, as the 139th university in the country.
Ondo
State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, on Tuesday, received a letter
conveying the approval from the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof.
Julius Okojie, in Abuja, according to a statement by the Ondo State
Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, on Wednesday.
Okojie said the university could begin the admission of students.
“I
write, on behalf of the Board, Management and staff of the National
Universities Commission, to convey to His Excellency, that with effect
from April 22, 2015, the Ondo State University of Medical Sciences has
been recognised as the 40th State University and the 139th University in
Nigeria,” Okojie reportedly said in the letter.
While
congratulating the governor and the people of Ondo State on the
establishment of the specialised university, the NUC boss advised the
government on the need for the NUC to assess the readiness of the
institution before the enrolment of students.
Mimiko commended
the NUC for the recognition, saying that it showed that the agency was
truly committed to human capacity development.
The governor said
that the Trauma Centre of the university had been accredited by the
National Postgraduate College for residency training in orthopaedic and
general surgery.
“We have put in place world-class facilities
that have already received recognition from requisite professional
bodies in the medical sciences,” he said.
The specialised medical science university is the first of such in Nigeria and the third to be established in Africa.
