ASUU, UNILORIN Branch Commissions Hostel for Female Students

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ilorin branch, has completed the building of the first phase of its female hostel at the cost of N7.28million.

The project was commissioned by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali.

Speaking at the commissioning, the outgoing ASUU Chairman, Professor Wahab Egbewole, said the project was executed by the university without any form of external assistance from any quarters.

Professor Egbewole said the project was aimed at cushioning the effect of inadequate hostel facilities in the institution.
He explained that the union targeted the female students because they were the most vulnerable segment of the community.

He said: “We have watched with consternation the plights of our children struggling and scrambling for the limited number of rooms in the campus.

“A number of them have fallen victims of shylock landlords and wicked neighbours while living outside the campus.

“We, therefore, resolved to contribute our quota in alleviating the sufferings and challenges faced by these young and vulnerable minds by building an 80-bed hostel for them.”

Egbewole also urged the university authorities to improve both electricity and water supply in the campus.
