Mechanic Remanded Over Fraud

An auto mechanic, 52-year old Rasaq Elegbede has been remanded in Kirikiri, Apapa, Lagos by an Ikeja Senior Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria. He was arraigned before the court on three-count charge of fraud and wilful damage to a customer’s car.

According to the charge filed by police prosecutor, Inspector Rachael Williams, Rasaq committed the offence in February 2014 when his customer, Abiodun Olotu, gave him Nissan car to fix.

He was allegedly given money to buy an engine for the Nissan car with registered number HA 756 EKY, but he tricked the owner by buying a 1997 model engine which is not only inferior but led to the damage of the car valued at N65,000.

Police stated that the offence is contrary to and punishable under section 166(d) 321 and 348 of the criminal laws of Lagos state of Nigeria 2011.

When the charge was read to him, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

P.M.NEWS gathered that when the car owner went to vehicle spare parts market by himself, he discovered the fraud and insisted on a refund or the mechanic should be ready to face prosecution. That led to Elegbede’s arrest and later arraignment.

The presiding Chief Magistrate, Tajudeen A. Elias admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. He must show evidence of tax payment to Lagos State government while his residential address will be verified by court officials.

In addition the surety must present his registration with the Lagos State Residents registration Agency, LASRRA.

Rasaq could not meet the bail condition in good time and was ordered to be remanded in prison custody pending when he could do so. The case was adjourned till 2 July, 2014 for mention.
