Basic Education Curriculum to take off September

The Federal Government will commence the implementation of the revised nine-year Basic Education Curriculum (BEC), which is meant to re-strengthen the education sector in September when the 2014/2015 session gets underway.

The new curriculum, which has introduced some new subjects into the school system including Basic Science, Basic Technology and Computer Studies/Information Technology, has also reduced the number of subjects for pupils and students from Primary One to Junior Secondary School (JSS) 3, as the previous BEC was reviewed to reduce the overload.

The chairman of National Education Research Development Council (NERDC), Dr. Stephen Dike, said that a major step in government’s efforts at reforming the education sector was the introduction of a nine-year BEC into schools in 2006, disclosing that the new curriculum was aimed at providing learners with well-rounded education in terms of character, aptitude and ability to compete favourably anywhere in the world.

He added that the BEC would also ensure the development of the human capital required to meet present and future challenges of globalisation and knowledge of the economy as education remains key in empowering the people and advancing the technological development of the country.
