NUC To Cancel Licences Of Five Universities
Five private Universities licences issued by the National Universities Commission (NUC) would be revoked.
We learnt that the NUC has resolved to put an end to the validity of the five private universities in the country for fallen short of the operational guidelines and procedures.
Our corespondent gathered that NUC has placed some of the affected universities under investigation before it takes final decision on suspending their operating licences.
A reliable source at the NUC who preferred anonymity, revealed to liveschoolnews.com.ng grapevine that one of the first victims of the regulatory agency’s action may be the Obong University, which is situated at Obong Ntak in Cross River State.
According to the source, other universities that may be affected by the exercise include Fountain University in Osogbo; Wellspring University, Evbuobanosa, Edo State; Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, Edo State, and McPherson University, Seriki Sotoyo, Ajebo, Ogun State, among others.
A list of approved universities in Nigeria as recently released by the commission reveals that there are a total of 129 universities in Nigeria, 40 federal, 39 states and 50 private ones.
While the NUC authorities had repeatedly hinged the creation of additional private universities on the need to boost access to tertiary education in the country, most of these universities may be axed for low students population and bogus programmes or disciplines they offer which the NUC has found to be non-indigenous to the Nigerian environment.
NUC’s Department of Quality Assurance, which recently carried out a forensic audit on some of the affected universities, including Obong University, informed that some of them were operating without internet bandwidth, some lacked visibility (no sign-posts), insufficient safety measures, lack of currency in their library holdings, as well as imbalance in staff mix.
Obong University was also alleged to have contravened the commission’s directive by continuing to admit students into its Computer Science Department, which had previously been denied accreditation in the programme.
It was also gathered that following the audit on the university, the Governing Council of the university visited the NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Julius Okojie, who in turn, criticised the institution for recruiting some unqualified personnel, including a fake Professor.
Okojie had also decried the poor governance structure of the university, which he said was attributable to the slow pace of development at the university.
Another factor, which may fuel plans to revoke their licences, according to our source, is that NUC is not pleased with the exorbitant fees charged by some of these proprietors, yet they fail to provide adequate funds to sustain infrastructural development.

ASUP to Embark on Another Indefinite Strike
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has said that they will on February 25th embark on an indefinite strike.
The union had earlier on February 11 issued a two weeks ultimatum urging the federal government to immediately implement the agreement it reached with the union which led to the suspension of its strike last July.
President of ASUP, Comrade Chibuzor Asomuga, while speaking with journalists in Abuja at the weekend at the end of the national executive council (NEC) meeting of the union frowned over the government’s failure to implement the agreement it reached with the union.
According to him, ASUP suspended the strike in July 2014 based on the plea of the Hon Minister of Education, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau who then requested for a three month moratorium to enable him tackle the lingering problems.
However, since the suspension of the strike none of the issues has been addressed to a logical conclusion.
It was learnt that other resolution reached at the end of the NEC included that “the Federal Government should, without further delay dissolve the Governing Councils of the Federal polytechnics Oko and Ado Ekiti as they have become burdens rather than solutions to the myriad of problems bedeviling the sector.
“That the circular issued by the Ministry of Education suspending the implementation CONTISS 15 Migration be withdrawn with immediate effect as the suspension is ill-timed and counterproductive and will create further tension in the sector.
“That Managements and Councils of Polytechnics in Nigeria must desist from interfering in ASUP activities in their Institutions and stop forthwith the intimidation of staff who insists that proper things be done.”

Robbers Kill Poly Student
There was pandemonium and chaos in Ado Ekiti, capital of Ekiti State
on Monday when a fierce 12-man gang of robbers attacked residents of
Olorunda, a satellite town in the city, killing a student of the Federal
Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, Temitope Ogunleye.
we gathered that the National Diploma II Accountancy student was shot at his father’s house on 14, Olorunda, Zone 4 area of Ado Local Government Area.
The arm-robber also inflicted machete wound on the victim’s father, Mr. Ogunleye, a Principal of Idu High School, Erio-Ekiti.
Recounting how the operation that lasted for about 45 minutes happened, Temitope’s younger sister, Yetunde, a student of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, said the robbers, numbering about 12, surround their residence at about 1:30am on Monday and started shooting sporadically.
She said the robbers had earlier robbed a house opposite their building owned by a widow and retiree.
“We had earlier heard the noise coming from the next building which sent a signal to us that robbers were in the area. But later they came to our house peeping through the windows and threatening that we should open the door or face the dire consequences.
“They said they were not in our house for tea party. They broke the windows and lit the living room with their torches and started shooting sporadically into the inner side of the bungalow when we didn’t open the door on time. It was at this time that I ran inside to inform our father who instructed us to shout.
“But as we were shouting, Temitope was already shot in the stomach and was in the pool of his blood. At this stage, the robbers had already entered the living room and started beating our mummy and everybody.
In fact, when they sighted daddy, they beat him mercilessly,” she said.
Commissioner of Police in the state, Taiwo Lakanu, and top members of the Command were said to have visited the bereaved, assuring residents that the area would be secured.

Fayose Order Immediate Reversal Of EKSU Late Registration Fees
Governor Fayose, has order the immediate reversal of the late registration fees charged by the management of the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti (EKSU).
Students of the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti (EKSU), yesterday, took to the streets to protest increase in the late registration fees charged by the management of the institution, following the closure of its online portal.
The students were peeved when the management began to charge students additional N5,000 penalty for late payment, while they had already been made to pay N5,000 for the same offence; bringing the total for late payment penalty to N10,000.
The students, who closed the gates to the institution, carried placards with different inscriptions and green leaves as they marched to the town and demanded to meet with Governor Ayodele Fayose.
According to some of them, they were also protesting epileptic power supply in both the university campus, their hostels in Iworoko-Ekiti, “entrepreneur fee of N5000” and also demanded the removal of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Patrick Oladipo Aina.
Attempts by the students to march to the Governor’s Office was, however, foiled by security men, led by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Taiwo Lakanu.
They, however, regrouped at Christ School, Ado Ekiti, where Governor Fayose addressed them.
Governor Fayose, while addressing the students, announced the immediate reversal of the late registration fee.
Fayose said: “We must have a start and closing date for registration. The university must be run outside of politics. If you remove the vice chancellor, you are sending the university backwards. The government must not interfere with the running of the school. The vice chancellor is tenure-bound and we must allow the system to run its course.”
On the issue of power outage, the governor said “the state government was not in charge of electricity, but advised them to discuss with their landlords on the payment of their electricity bills, because the electricity company said people don’t pay their electricity bills.”

The SSANIP boss described the recent action taken by the rector, where she allegedly coerce some workers into submission, rather than addressing the issues raised against her, as unfortunate.
“It is quite unfortunate that the rector is telling the public that the crisis has been resolved when she is yet to address all issues raised against her. We have said it time without number that we have no personal matter to settle with the rector.
“Nobody can call the workers back to work except the union, because we declared the strike in the first place.
“The truth of the matter is that there is stalemate in the polytechnic. Even the students were not happy because when the rector told them to resume, there was no guarantee of full academic activities.”
He vowed that the union would remain inactive until an amicable solution is reached on the matter.
Ayeni cautioned the management and Governing council not to take further actions against workers and the union leaders since the matter is pending in the courts.
He rather alleged that the union leaders are constantly being intimidated.
He explained that Akande should not think that the unions were fighting a personal battle with her but only trying to guide her to do the needful.
The council had announced suspension of unions’ activities while the management issued a statement disclaiming the unions.
He urged the Federal Government to, as a matter of necessity, set up an independent investigation panel to verify the claims of the unions against the management.
The Rector, Taiwo Akande, recently met with workers promising to offset some outstanding dues, which formed part of the unions’ agitations.

ASUU Plans To Shut Down Universities Over Death Of ABU Professor
The Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU), on thursday, threaten to shut down Universities in the country if the Inspector General of Police (IGP) fail to arrest those responsible for the murder of Professor Ahmad Mustapha Falaki of the Ahmadu Bello University’s Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR).
It would be recalled that Professor Falaki was last Saturday killed by policemen at the Fala village in Kibiya local government area of Kano state for suspecting him to be a Boko Haram Member.
A statement jointly signed by chairman and secretary of ASUU-ABU, Dr. Muhammad Kabir Aliyu and Dr. Mustapha Liman respectively, said the union would be left with no option than to seek redress through other legal means if the IGP failed to heed to their call.
The statement said: “Professor Falaki was on an official assignment when his car was snatched by gunmen at Fala village. He was at Fala for more than two hours making calls to officers in ABU and his family.
Suddenly, some persons who identified themselves as policemen appeared on the scene allegedly in pursuit of Boko Haram who had earlier laid siege on the Police post in Kibiya town.
“Professor Falaki identified himself by presenting them with his ABU identity card and driver’s licence. But for some inexplicable reasons, these policemen ignored the identification insisting that for all they care the deceased and his entourage were members of Boko Haram who had escaped from Kibiya. They then began to strike them with machetes and other clubs. Professor Falaki was struck a fatal blow and died on the scene.”
