The National leadership of the National Association of Nigerian
Students, NANS has waggle into the crisis between Management and
students of the University of Jos which led to the closure of the
institution since November, 2014.
The NANS leadership led by its
National President, Tijani Usman and the institution’s Management led by
the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai at the end of a six-hour
meeting held on Tuesday at the Senate Chamber of the institution agreed
to shift their positions so that academic activities could resume.
Addressing
journalists separately at the end of the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor,
Prof. Hayward Mafuyai said academic activities had been scheduled to
commence on Monday 23rd February, 2015 but the NANS intervention was to
iron out some grey areas.
He added that “Management had
investigated the immediate and remote causes of the protest which led to
the closure of the school and have taken measures to avoid a
recurrence.
“With the intervention of NANS and other well meaning
stakeholders, we have decided to bend over backward which is not a sign
of weakness but strength. The students have been forgiven but sanctions
must be apportioned.
“Leading protest and destroying public
property are offenses and the SUG leadership must face disciplinary
committee who will look into the issues and determine the next line of
action.”
However, the NANS President, Tijani Usman who lamented
the wasted period due to the closure also appealed to the Management to
tamper justice with mercy as the students have learnt their lessons from
the mistake.
