Senior Administrative Officer, Joint Admission and Matriculation
Board (JAMB), Lagos, Hajia Amina Haruna, has dismissed allegations of
deliberately marking down scripts of students seeking admission into
tertiary institutions in the country. She said JAMB does not
deliberately fail candidates that wrote the Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination (UTME) or withhold their marks to rob them of
admission.
Haruna gave the clarification at this year’s Students
Academic Success Summit (SASS) organized by an education consultancy
firm, Standard Mandate International (SMI). The event held at the Main
Auditorium of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, had in attendance
over 500 students from 35 secondary schools in Lagos and Ogun states.
The
clarification came in the wake of students’ outcry over repeated low
grades recorded in the UTME in recent time, such that candidates that
scored less than 200 were considered for admission.
Hajia Haruna
explained to the students that the exam body chose the Computer Based
Test (CBT) instead of the former pencil and paper mode to guarantee
credible results. She maintained that the CBT has come to stay in the
system, explaining that all candidates for this year’s UTME would write
computer-based test.
She said the CBT would help to maintain the
credibility of the exam process and help reduce incidence of
cancellation of results. She also explained the entry requirement to the
university, pegging it at five o’ level credits in relevant subjects.
She further said that the Computer Base Test (CBT) exam is bill to commence on 4th March.
