University of Michigan Yossi Schiff Memorial Scholarships for Postgraduate Africans and Asians

The Yossi Schiff Awards assist outstanding international students. It is designed to promote international understanding and offer an educational opportunity through scholarships to foreign graduate students (from developing countries) in need.

Eligibility
International graduate students from developing countries with F-1 or J-1 visas pursuing the underlisted eligible careers may apply. Please see below for the list of eligible countries and careers.

US citizens and permanent residents of the USA are not eligible.

Number of awards Not specified, but several will be given

This will be a onetime stipend award.


One stipend award of $25,000 will be made.

A student may receive only one Yossi Schiff award, but in extraordinary circumstances a student may be considered for a second award. In no circumstances will a student receive more than two awards.


CRITERIA

Students must have a strong academic record and demonstrate outstanding academic and professional promise.

Students from developing countries of Africa and Asia, including:
Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Cote-d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Gaza Strip, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, The Occupied Territories (West Bank), Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Syria, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe.


HOW TO APPLY

Students must be nominated by their programs. Students should contact their program regarding their selection and nomination process.

Nomination materials must include the following:

    Completed nomination and program information
    Curriculum vitae (CV)
    Personal statement
    Research statement
    Two letter of recommendation; one letter of recommendation from the program chair or faculty/research advisor and one additional letter of recommendation

The Scholarship Fund is a fitting tribute to Yossi Schiff, a young man of Jewish heritage who received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 2005 and cared deeply for the world around him trying to foster values of mutual respect between people, cultures and nations.

This award honors his memory - his open mind and kind heart, the concern he showed for others, and his passion and curiosity in life.
