Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for
admission into the following Postgraduate programmes leading to the
award of Postgraduate Diploma, Masters degree and Ph.D in the Department
of Theatre Arts and Mass Communication and The National Institute For
Legislative Studies (NILS) Abuja.
A. GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
I.
A Candidate for postgraduate studies in the university of Benin must
have obtained at least five (5) credits in WASC, NECO, GCE (ordinary
level or their equivalents,) A credit pass in Maths and English is
required.
II. Four credits of Ordinary level plus OND (not pass), NCE, IJMB or Advance level passes.
III.
A holder of a Pass (Degree/Diploma) is not qualified for admission into
the postgraduate programme of the University of Benin. In addition,
all holders of 3rd class degree must possess PGD to be considered for
admission into the Masters programmes.
IV. Candidates
who obtained Masters degree but with Weighted Average Score (WAS)
between 55.0-59% can only be considered for admission into the M.Phil
programme in the first instance.
V. A candidate applying
for the Ph.D in any programme of the University of Benin must have
obtained a weighted average score of 60% or letter grade ‘B’ average in
the Masters degree.
VI. A candidate applying for the PhD
with a Master’s degree from any other University who in his/her
Master’s study has not previously taken the compulsory courses or their
equivalents similar to the ones in the University of Benin shall on
admission be required to offer and pass such courses with a minimum of
60% or letter grade ‘B’.
Transcripts
Candidates should request
their former Universities/Institutions to forward their academic
transcript(s) to the “Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies”, to
reach him not later than 8 weeks from the date of this
publication.Applications of candidates whose transcripts are not
forwarded to the school shall not be processed.
Referees Reports
Candidates
should request their referees to mail reports on them directly to the
Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies. Applications shall not be
processed unless the referee reports are available.

Admission Requirements
A. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Mass Communication:
The PGD Programme in Mass Communication is open to candidates with:
I. First degree in Mass communication not below third class.
II. Honours degree not below second class lower division in any discipline
III. HND in Mass communication with CGPA of 3.00 and above.
IV.
Those whose CGPA in their HND (Mass Communication) is below 3.00 are
required to have a minimum of 5 years relevant working experience.
V. HND or equivalent and any other discipline with a CGPA not below 3.50.
B. Masters of Arts M.A in Mass Communication:
The
Master of Arts (M.A) degree programme in Mass communication is designed
for candidates who have background knowledge in Mass communication
having earned degree(s) in Mass Communication or PGD in Mass
Communication. Apart from this the programme is also designed for
Candidates who met the entry requirement as stipulated by the
University of Benin senate for M.A programme in Mass Communication.
Admission Requirement
To
qualify for admission into the Masters of Arts (M.A) degree programme, a
candidate must possess one of the following qualifications.
i.
Honours degree (not below Second Class lower) in Mass Communication or
journalism obtained from University recorgnised by senate of the
University of Benin.
ii. HND in Mass Communication, or Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Mass Communication with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 and above.
iii.B.A/B.Sc in other discipline or a PGD Mass Communication with not less than a CGPA of 3.0.
Candidates
could be required to take and pass a qualifying oral/written exam
administered by the Department/PG school as the case may be.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Degree programme in Mass Communication
The
Doctor of Philosophy (P.hD) degree programme in Mass Communication is
purposefully designed to provide qualitative education to deserving
candidates. It is geared towards equipping its graduates with the
needful knowledge and professional skills required for successful
professional academic careers in the field of Mass Communication
Admission requirements
To qualify, the candidates must meet the University of Benin admission requirement for a Ph.D programme:
i.
Masters degree in Mass Communication with not less than 60% (B) from
the university of Benin or approved university recorgnised by the senate
of the University of Benin.
ii. Pass an oral/written examination administered by the department/the postgraduate school as the case may be.
Duration of Programmes:
PGD: The programme is expected to Last for a minimum of two semesters for full time.
M.A: The programme is expected to Last for a minimum of three semesters for full time.
b) Ph.D. A candidate on full time will be required to spend a minimum of thirty six (36) calendar months
THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR LEGISLATIVE STUDIES
The
University of Benin, in affiliation with the National Institute for
Legislative Studies (NILS), Abuja, offers programmes leading to the
award of masters degrees in Legislative Studies, Legislative Drafting.
NILS is the capacity building organ of the National Assembly; it was
established by an Act of Parliament. It works to support and strengthen
the legislature in the pursuit of the ideals of democracy through
research, training, legislative support, advocacy and networking.
Applications
are hereby invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission
into the legislative Postgraduate programmes of the University of
Benin/National Institute for Legislative Studies. The University of
Benin awards the degrees while the programmes are run at the facilities
of the National Institute for Legislative Studies in Abuja by academic
staff of the two institutions and renowned practitioners in the
democratic and legislative process.

Programme Objectives
The general objectives of the postgraduate programmes are two-fold:
i.
to equip legislators and legislative staff at all tiers of government
with the knowledge and skills required for improved performance of their
various functions; and
ii. to provide opportunities
for members of the public who are interested in the practices and
procedures of the legislature to familiarize themselves with the
operating procedures and processes of this branch of government.
Programme Mode
The programmes are available on full-time basis. Lectures are delivered on week days.
Duration of Programmes
The
duration of the master’s degree programme is a minimum period of four
(4) semesters, and a maximum period of six (6) semesters.
Programme Delivery Approach
All
the Postgraduate Programmes are delivered through a series of lectures,
continuous assessment, course examinations and dissertation.
B. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for admission into the Master’s Degree Programme, a prospective candidate must:

Be a holder of a Bachelor’s degree, with a minimum of Second Class
Lower Division in a relevant area from a recognized university, or a
Postgraduate Diploma in a relevant area from a recognized institution
with at least 60% CGPA;
· Have the matriculation
requirements of Five (5) credit passes at the Ordinary Level, including
English Language and Mathematics.
METHOD OF APPLICATION:
Candidates are to purchase application forms online with valid VERVE OR MASTER ATM BANK CARD for the sum of N12,050.00.
The
form must be correctly filled with all information required before
submitting online and thereafter printed out from the uniben Website,
www.uniben.edu. The following documents will be printed out from the
Website:- application, referee, and Transcript request forms. Any form
not properly filled will not be treated. All application processes must
be completed latest on 16th March 2015.

Only
candidate given admission into the various Postgraduate programmes are
to proceed to pay the total amount of Non-Refundable Acceptance fees
itemised below.
