Damietta University was founded in 2012 in Damietta city in Egypt
(Arabic: دمياط Dumyāṭ). The idea of opening classes for some faculties
there began when the number of Mansoura University students in Damietta
increased. The decision to open branch colleges followed. The Faculty of
Education opened for the academic year 1976-77, the Faculty of Science
and the Faculty of Commerce in 1985-86, The Faculty of Specific
Education, in 1990-91, The Faculty of Applied Arts in 2004-05 then
faculties of Agriculture, Arts and Physical Education in 2006-07.
In 2007, presidential decree 276 established a branch in Damietta.
Prof. Dr. Mohamed Bassiouni Sweilem Vice President of Mansoura
University for Education and Student Affairs oversaw the affairs of the
branch until decree 141 on 17/1/2008, to appoint Prof. Bishri
Abdel-Hamid as the first Vice President for Damietta Branch affairs. The
Faculty of Applied Arts, Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Agriculture are
located on the same campus in Alasar district. The Faculties of
Science, Education, Commerce, Specific Education and Physical Education
are scattered around New Damietta City. In July 2012, Presidential
Decree No. 19 of 2012 establishing Damietta University in New Damietta
was issued.
