Ebola: Immigration officials at airports, borders on red alert

The Nigerian Immigration Service has placed its men at the nation’s various entry points on red alert following the death of a Liberian who was killed by the deadly Ebola disease in Lagos on Friday.

The NIS Public Relations Officer, Emeka Obua, said the immigration service personnel at the airports, seaports and land borders had been issued an advisory by the Ministry of Health, to watch out for anyone coming into the country with symptoms of the Ebola disease.

According to him, any visitor with Ebola disease symptoms would be quarantined and taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Obua, stated that the immigration service is working closely with Port Health officials at the nation’s borders to prevent infected persons from entering the country and spreading the viral disease.

Asked if the service was given any special equipment with which to detect Ebola disease carriers, the NIS spokesman, said no equipment was issued, noting that the immigration personnel knew what to look out for in visitors, adding that they are collaborating with health officials to safeguard the nation.

Obua, further said that the NIS personnel had been cautioned to wear hand gloves and limit their contacts with people coming into the country.

He said, “We have been issued a health advisory by the Ministry of Health, and this has been given to all our men at the entry points across the nation. They know what to look out for in people coming into the country and they are also working closely with Port Health officials who know exactly the symptoms to look out for in people.

“Anyone who is suspected of having the disease would be quarantined and taken to the hospital for evaluation, we are not taking any chances.”
