Autistic man disappears among crowd in Lagos

The family of an autistic patient, Mr. David Oreye, has expressed anxiety on the fate of their member who has been missing for five days.

David went missing on Thursday afternoon after his brothers had gone briefly to a pharmacy store in Ikeja, Lagos to buy some drugs.

The family members, who live in Omole Estate Phase 1, Ogba, said they were deeply worried after all efforts to locate him proved abortive.

They added that the case had been reported at the Ikeja Police Division since the incident happened on Thursday.

Our correspondent learnt that at about 4pm on Thursday, the four boys in the family were returning in the family car from the Muritala Muhammed International Airport, when they stopped over by a pharmacy to get some drugs.

The two elder brothers were said to have entered the store, while David and the youngest son were in the vehicle.

However, Oreye was said to have opened the door, and begun to walk away while the youngest followed and tried to stop him. But he could not until Oreye eventually disappeared among the crowd.

Speaking with PUNCH Metro, the father, Udo Oreye, said the family was worried about his whereabouts, and had gone to the General Hospital, Ikeja and other places to locate him.

He said, “We have been to everywhere we felt he could be but, all to no avail. We went to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where we were advised to go to Medical Emergency and Surgical Emergency Wards. We went to both wards and left contacts in case he is brought in as a case of accident by reason of his being an autistic child.”

The Lagos State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Lelma Kolle, could not be reached for comment.
