NANS commends Fashola over LASU fee reversal

The leadership of the South-West Zone of the National Association of Nigerian Students has commended the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, for reverting the tuition of the Lagos State University to its original rate.

Fashola had increased the tuition from N25, 000 to between N193, 000 and N350, 000. The students of the school had staged mass protests to reject the new fee regime.

In a statement on Monday, the Public Relations Officer of NANS in the South-West, Jeremiah Olatinwo, thanked the Lagos State Government for the reversal.

The statement reads in part, “The leadership of NANS Zone D, wishes to commend the Executive Governor of Lagos State and his team for their giant stride, large-heartedness and faithfulness to their promise by reverting to the old school fees structure of one of West Africa’s acclaimed citadel of learning, Lagos State University.”

Olatinwo added that the action would advance the frontiers of education and make education affordable for the common man.

He saluted the courage of human rights activists and those who stood by the students during the period of the struggle for the fee reduction.

He said, “Our profound gratitude goes out to our fathers and friends, who in the spirit of comradeship and camaraderie stood strongly by us in the face of the struggle for the future of the students of LASU.

“To the students, who, despite the odds and pain, endured the fight, we say Viva Aluta.”

Olatinwo said he was grateful that the governor reversed the fees regardless of whether he had a political reason for doing so or not.

“People are entitled to their different opinions. He (Fashola) might have done it for political reasons; that, I don’t know.

“One thing I am happy for is that we were victorious in our struggle for our colleagues in LASU. Political reason or not, he has done well to have listened to the plight of the people,” he said.
